Excellent video through and through. Saw this on sale for Black Friday and your review was the first one I clicked on. So glad I did, you’re a talent to be reconned with and very informative. I’m a pro live looper and the way you used this modeler has my brain figuring out ways I can add this to my show.
Fab production and very pleasant playing too to boot! congrats! what a clever great little bugger of a unit too!!!! it's a Boss, so no wonder it delivers. it's the only possibility I've heard that has honestly tempted me in the last 4 years
Really nice sounding tones and features. I think the main form factor mistake on this and other Modelers is that the Expression Pedal should be detachable so the unit can sit on a desktop, and the Pedal can be on the floor. This would increase the usability and flexibility of the unit, while reducing its "packable" travel size.
Making it modular so that you can detach it is fine, but the default should be to have it integrated because most people who are buying something like this is to be able to carry less gear including connector cables, separate power supplies, etc. My beef with most of the cutdown multiFX pedals like the HX Stomp and Stomp XL is the lack of an inclusion of an expression pedal. I’m not that big of a fan of many of these units‘ drives and spring reverbs. So if I’m going to compromise on something just for the portability advantage I want it to be a no-fuss solution, otherwise I’d rather just take a pedalboard. But your mileage may vary if you often use scenes/snapshots and MIDI which are regular pedalboard in a reasonable size can’t do unless you add additional pedal switching system.
The ME-90 is not an entry-level modeler. It is designed for people who like regular pedals and would rather manipulate them manually rather than with a screen, and for those who don’t care about presets and orchestration options. That’s okay so long as you like the sounds of all the BOSS pedals or want a one-and-some solution and don’t want to mix and match for best-of-breed sounds. For people that want an even smaller footprint and are a bit more adventurous with their signal chain, then the GX-10 makes a lot of sense.
I have the Boss GX-100, which I felt sound and feel wise was a notch above the rest. This is basically the same unit, just more compact. I tried the new amp models earlier and must say, they continued where they left off with their own "X" creations that were included in the original GT-1000 and GX-100. There's a certain weight, dynamic response and transparency about them just makes them feel very "right".
Nice presentation. I'm planning on using this as more of a stand alone desk top practice tool. And since I don't need much in the way of distortion, this may overkill. But compared to the other units I've tried, the clean tones seem more realistic. It would have been helpful if you had shown how you were making adjustments on the unit rather than on the interface. Thanks for the review.

Any thoughts on how this compares specifically to the Hotone Ampero II Stomp? Afaik Hotone has far more amp models, but Boss has more fx - not sure which is ultimately preferable. Just looking for a solid medium-price all-rounder for home use, and I've pretty much got it down to a choice between those two...
Longtime GT-1000 Core user. But I’ve built that into a pedalboard with my looper and vocal fx for acoustic gigs. For electric gigs where I’m just playing guitar, this would be so much more portable that hauling my whole pedalboard and much more convenient than ripping my GT-1000 Core and an expression pedal off the board.
Very nice review! I think one feature it lacks that the GX-100 has is a dual effects loop which might be missed or not depending on the user. It seems to be a better version of the Pod Go for less money as well.
Thanks so much! The price point is definitely a key feature for this device. As is the size. That limits too many physical features but I think they jammed a lot in there considering the price and size.
@@LonelyRocker Definitely appreciate the time it takes to produce a video, especially one that demos a music product. Yes, they jammed a bunch load in for sure, though I'm seeing that the HX Stomp managed to fit in a stereo fx loop by side mounting some jacks - gotta pay about 40% for that though, and no expression pedal.
You know it should do, that's typically the implementation of midi via both USB, trs and the wireless dongle. The mobile apps and desktop apps all follow the standard MIDI protocol and sysex implementation . It is a real shame in my books that you get blasted with dozens of practically identical videos on day 1 and next to nothing showing this thing expanded or remotely controlled or integrated into a full board. This thing with the reduced size and touch screen is an ideal desktop and mobile companion.
The simplest answer is no but there are so many variables. Are you plugging into the input, the return, using 4 cable method, what kind of speaker, are you turning the cab irs off….nothing ever sounds the “same”.
@@LonelyRocker Hello ! Thanks you for your answer. I use two methods : the simpliest one just plug in the input of my tube combo and the second one : effects loop

I'm super interested in this device but I can't find any info about this anywhere: Is the send-return only mono or is it stereo? I have some stereo pedals I'd like to use with this in the effects loop.
I have a question: as it features only TRS output, in a live gig context for a BASS player (me), do you recommend using a TRS-TRS cable or TRS-XLR (MONO) cable? maybe using a DI in between...? What would be your go-to option? Thanks in advance!
You'd have to test that with your rig. Cables are cheap. I don't play live so I don't want to steer you wrong. In the studio I like TRS because it's cleaner for recording...in theory that could translate live...
Form factor and sounds look superb. However, it's Achilles heel for many is going to be that user interface. Not convinced it's particularly intuitive unless you've been previously invested in the Boss product eco system. Fender do it much better with their more icon like interface with pictures of amps and pedals. I'd like this machine with the Fender screen. The danger with the Boss interface is that you could be drawn into too much tone chasing fiddling rather than actually playing. I also thinks it's still cheeky asking you to pay for a Bluetooth adaptor if you wanted to do some tweaking via the app on your mobile.
The interface is a challenge on other products too...Fractal being an example. But desktop editors make it much easier. Yes, Fender, being one of the newer products on the market went for a graphical interface. But that's not always the best either. I have quite a few modelers here and they all benefit form a desktop editor. Even the ones that have better interfaces. In a live setting hopefully presets are set. But I get in that environment quick tweaks are easier with a more friendly interface....
I have the evh 5150 iconic and i would like a small effects pedal to 4 cable method with . Do you like this one or do you have another suggestion? Thank you!

I've actually never tried the GT-1000 myself. I'll try to correct that but with Boss Tone Studio it makes everything pretty similar so there is consistency between devices...
@@LonelyRocker I own GT-1000 but barely ever use it because I can't immediately find things I'm looking for - adding delays to whichever factory presets for example. I thought GX model was developed to answer many complaints that GT-1000 is not user-friendly. Perhaps you could get hold of one of those in the near future to see if there's any progress from Boss in that direction. I was also looking into NUX MG30. I like that it has "reverb" and "delay" buttons among others right on front panel. Have you tried one of those yet?
I’ve watched videos on the GT-1000 and GT-1000 Core and it looks obnoxiously inconvenient regarding the UI experience. I have the GX-100 and it’s the most user friendly multi effects unit I’ve used. Even beats the hx stomp I have on user friendliness.
@@LonelyRockerhow about send and return settings, can they be adjusted with the me 90 the effects are really loud going into the back of my amp and you can’t adjust that.
I was going to buy the ME90 but now I'm buying this because of amp stacking and flexibility. I'm glad it has the pedal...I can add ctrl switches for patches. This is a monster little unit.
What stands out is the cleanliness and simplicity of the playing and explanation. On the BOSS channel, one may actually wonder if the demo was recorded using this unit. This is a very good review and demo.
Thank god this thing doesn't have a balanced out port because I would have had to spend more on this instead of the Matribox Pro lol the latency is a bit of a shame on the Matribox though...
I went to a studio the other day to jam with my younger brother who hits really hard on the drums. I used a Marshall jcm 2000 and a fender deluxe jr. Something was off . I just couldn’t find a tone. I don’t know if it was the volume or string. I had a 2017 les paul and a les paul special with single coil. Maybe I need a compression pedal. I feel so lost right now.
I’m aware. But typically companies short change features on smaller units. By making this fully compatible with the GX100 it creates many possible scenarios for users.
Very helpful review, and it's nice to see some CanCon rise to the top of Google's algorithm. 🍁 It's also nice to see a pro-grade, contemporary multi-FX pedal brought down to a portable size and an affordable price. (Boss is the last vendor I would have expected do this.) Including an onboard expression pedal at this size is *great* - one less thing to set up and break down, and one less connection to worry about.
I think my Fractal still sounds better, but for the price all of these affordable compact modelers are extremely good. Today's guitar players are spoiled with options.
Oh, I never compared it to the Fractal, that's also 5 times the price. But for 400 bucks you're getting a lot on this little thing....and it sounds really good...
I also have Fractal FM3 but I take my GX-100 out with me 90% of the time. It just works for me live. The FM3 stays in the studio with my other "high-end" stuff.
@@hardcorediaries There's no amp modeling in the VP4, so it's basically an FM3 without the amp models and one more button. Sure, fractal effects are top notch, but I don't see why anyone would want it instead of just using an FM3 with the amp sim turned off. I guess it's 300.00 cheaper, but it's still very expensive when compared to other effects boards, or even buying the individual "real" pedals.
@@gibson2623I was lucky enough to be able to afford the GX100 but my bass player wasn’t. He is now going to buy the GX10. Just because something isn’t for you doesn’t mean it isn’t for someone. Be less self centered my friend :)
That's a common theme with other modelers too...Look at Fractal. But desktop editors are just more convenient and Boss Tone Studio is so easy to sue...
@@LonelyRocker Well, I have no interest in a law suit. I don't hook it up and use software on a computer. I've been trying to use the device itself. It's VERY difficult. That would be fun!!
Lack of a real EQ block in the ME-90 kills it for me.
Is it more intuitive and simpler to operate than GT-1000?
I've actually never tried the GT-1000 myself. I'll try to correct that but with Boss Tone Studio it makes everything pretty similar so there is consistency between devices...
@@LonelyRocker
I own GT-1000 but barely ever use it because I can't immediately find things I'm looking for - adding delays to whichever factory presets for example.
@@BourkeTommy
Interesting, thank you!
Yeah, that's my beef with most of my Roland and Boss gear.
I get lost in the settings.
You need a college degree to understand what is going on...lol
So can you bypass the amp and can and just use for overdrive and modulation through a standard amp?
Absolutely. I hinted at 4 cable method. Every block can be turned on or off independently...
@@LonelyRockerhow about send and return settings, can they be adjusted with the me 90 the effects are really loud going into the back of my amp and you can’t adjust that.
@@LonelyRocker nice. I may just sell up my pedalboard then. Neater solution.
I was going to buy the ME90 but now I'm buying this because of amp stacking and flexibility. I'm glad it has the pedal...I can add ctrl switches for patches. This is a monster little unit.
I think this is a great step up from the ME90 if you want a real modeler.
Midi controller?
You're a great musician, I enjoyed the music actually, something stands out about your playing
Thank you so much!!!! That means so much to me....cheers!!!!
What stands out is the cleanliness and simplicity of the playing and explanation. On the BOSS channel, one may actually wonder if the demo was recorded using this unit. This is a very good review and demo.
X-MODDED x2 IR:OWNHAMMER 412 RECT............Born to blend! nice!!!!
Not bad eh????? :)
You at least need some EQ, drive and comp pedals just to tweak the tone when situations like this arise.
Not sure what this has to do with the GX-10 but maybe you should try it! ;-)
@@LonelyRocker sorry , I got tone problems and I just needed to get it out.
I think the size comparison should’ve included a Line 6 Pod Go.
Was just comparing it to devices I have here...for reference....
@ fair enuf, I can’t expect you to have every modeler out there! But to me this seems pretty similar in size and capabilities to the Pod Go.
This is just what I was looking for . I always liked boss fx. I started on an me5.
Sweet! Grab one!
For the size, could be less weight
It could? How so?
Is the expression pedal made of plastic?
Yes it is.
Fractal vs Boss GX series please
Could be interesting!
How Much Price
I said it in the video....
the dsp is a chip of course is not subject to size
Thanks so much!! We need more Can Con in the guitar community! And yeah. Great value here. Good move for boss. Cheers!
He does like to dive in, or so he keeps saying.
I love diving in 😂
@@LonelyRocker Yeah!!!!
Feels on the new fractal VP4?
I also have Fractal FM3 but I take my GX-100 out with me 90% of the time. It just works for me live. The FM3 stays in the studio with my other "high-end" stuff.
I think my Porsche is better than my Toyota but my Toyota is pretty good for the price.
NO MIDI?!!!
You can access Midi via the USB-C....I didn't test that though...
@@LonelyRocker need Midi in and out to access othe midi pedals
Yeah big disappointment for me too. TRS MIDI would’ve been a perfect fit for this but…darn
Bla-bla-bla :((
Milking the cow until the next cow arrives for the same thing.
Just different options for different people...before this there were just Amps ;-)
@@LonelyRocker I know what you mean, and you know what I mean. Take care mate, thanks for the videos :)
@@gibson2623I was lucky enough to be able to afford the GX100 but my bass player wasn’t. He is now going to buy the GX10.
Just because something isn’t for you doesn’t mean it isn’t for someone. Be less self centered my friend :)
@@LuisJimenez-pb3ge i only talked about Boss. Not me. If you dont understand what said, it s fine by me. Take care bro.
@@gibson2623 cheers 🥂
Same interface as the GX-100 and therefore SO difficult to use. Terribly unintuitive.
I do much better with an intuitive skeuomorphic interface like, say, tonemaster.
I've watched lots of videos on the GX-100 and read the manual and I still find it so difficult to use.
@@iancurrie8844wow, I use the touch screen exclusively to sculpt all my tones. Personally I think it’s so easy to use even a caveman can do it 😉
Too much money.. drop it by $100 and we'll talk
We all have different budgets.
You know how much an expression / volume pedal is alone... never mind 170 Boss effects, 23 amps and a tuner?
Boss sucks ,since some years ago!!!nothing new just the same and overpriced
@LonelyRocker Hi Dan!! Cheers from Italy! Do you think it is a good choice for a newbie starting to play in a band and going live soon? I am worried that too many options can be hard to manage...Great video btw!!! 🤟
Thanks! And hello from Canada! I actually think this is a great starter unit. It's more of a modeler than the ME-90 is but there are a ton of very useable presets that you can just plug in and get playing, The you can take time to learn it more and start to make your own presets and its pretty affordable....So much to learn. Just jump in and start having fun!!
Thank you very much! I'll go for it!
