- It might be the most remote restaurant in all of Texas. Find out how this family cafe has fed hungry travelers since the Great Depression.

I'm from South Texas and watching this reminds me of why Texas will always be my home!
Why would you ever want to live anywhere else
What part of south Texas?
I'm from the RGV....
@@chanceDdog2009 i am also from the Rio Grande Valley
What a sweet spirited person; we need more people like her.
I've eaten at this cafe numerous times over the years. If at all possible, I would time my visit to get there just before the sun came up. I would sit at a window facing east and watch the sun come up. The Guadalupe Peak would be the most beautiful picture imaginable at that time of morning. Biscuits and gravy or eggs and ham and the sunrise at the Salt Flat Cafe..... WOW, what memories!!! I was by there the summer of 2018 and it did look like the place was closed. Too bad Miss Shirley didn't have someone to carry on the family tradition!!!
Lucky
Sunrise and sunsets in Texas are so beautiful.
As of August 2020 still not much happing there.
Danny, I'm jealous! You paint quite a picture of sunrise at the Salt Flat!! Wish I was there.
@@autobug2 Wish you could have shared the experience with me. It was always awesome!!! Thanks!!!
I lost my parents on 8/23/74 in a multi family fatality wreck in Salt Flat. I just turned 19. They were going to visit my brother at Ft. Bliss. I stayed home working. A freak rain hit that hot oily asphalt and turned it as slick as ice. The other family was a young Hispanic couple. It was tragic. I'm sure Shirley remembers it. Life is a fragile thing that can change in an instant. It's not what you achieve, it's what you overcome that builds your character. I'm ok. I write and produce praise songs and upload them to UA-cam. God bless America.
God bless you I’m so sorry to lose your parents like that especially at your age. We’re about the same age. I graduated in 74. So sorry.❤🙏🏽
I'm 42 years old now and I can still remember being a little girl and getting excited to see Bob Phillips on TV Sunday before church. Back then he used to be sponsored by Dairy Queen. I love that he's still at it and now has his wife by his side. He has such an awesome job. Can't wait for you to write your memoirs Bob, the stories you must have to tell!
A real sweetheart and an American treasure...
Shirley is sure right...long drives are perfect for prayer!!
Thank you to the kind gentleman who provided us with gas from the mechanic shop behind the Salt Flats cafe he was a life saver. There are no gas stations on Hwy 62 between El Paso and Guadalupe Mountains National Park.
There is fuel several places between EP and Carlsbad. Dell City for one, credit card only
Lovely. This is what America should be more about.
I grew up in Dallas and on Saturday or Sunday I used to watch this guy's show, I think it was called 8 country reporter. Always my favorite show and even though I have moved away years ago, one day I will return to Texas and go check out all of those places and small towns on my list from watching this awesome show all those years ago. Must have been the late 80's or early 90's. So happy I came across this!
I remember when it was "4 Country Reporter".
Thank you Shirley. It's been years, I miss my desert home.
I would put out road signs. Stop, iced tea, hamburgers, great food, and a hug !! Hugs are free.
This is one of my favorite T. C. R. stories. Don’t know how many times I’ve watched it. Shirley reminds me of my Mom and my Aunt. T. C. R. Stories give me a warm feeling. Especially this one and The Burnt Biscuit Bakery story. I like the N. Y. Hot dog guy too. ❤
Oh how I love Texas.
God bless Texas🇺🇸🙏
If you haven't lived the life - you can't imagine how truly wonderful it is.
Thank God for West Texas.
"Amen Brother, Amen"
I’ve been by here but long after it’s been closed. I even looked for the geocache hidden in the old phone booth but didn’t find it. She has an interesting story behind her. The history that she kept alive will always be the history of our great state of Texas
I'm from Carlsbad, been there to eat plenty of times. She's so sweet❤.
Love places like this
What an wonderful story.God bless her and y,all.:)
Texas gems like Shirley Richardson are worth more than gold..❤
Wow! I just got back from backpacking the Guadalupe Ridge Trail. After seeing this I wish I'd gone through Salt Flat to see if Shirley is still there. My loss ! Thank you Bob.
We need to keep these old places going,, they give us a sense of humanity.
Salt Flat Cafe has a facebook that Shirley post on. She closed down the place do to a fall she had. She says she hopes to open it up again one day.
What a lovely lady. Thanks for this.
The greatest state Is Texas because great people
The sunrise and sunset there… my word, a beautiful experience.
I use to live on a ranch besides that salt flat cafe. I went to school in Dell city in 1963.
I can imagine all the great memories from your childhood!
What a sweet lady! She's a rare one. I love America and how it used to be. Those who came before technology certainly were able to dream and make things happen.
Awwww... I love Shirley! And EVERYTHING Texas! ❤️
I drove by the Salt Flat Cafe many times in past years, and never knew it was open! Now I wish I'd stopped by!
God Bless you ma'm.
Sucks to see most of these gems have closed now
Exactly... I have been there many times...
Can't go from Carlsbad New Mexico to El Paso Texas and not stop there.
And the great people that ran those places
I ride a motorcycle and TCR has turned me on to a number of out-of-the-way places and locations. TCR is a Texas jewel and we Texans are lucky to experience this treasure.
I'm willing to bet my dad is still watching this from Heaven. He loved this show.
Growing up we uesd to ride all over Tx i got see a lot of history Peace and Love To 💘 All
A lot of us Californians love T. C. R too. God bless Texas and Texans.
WOW!!!
Loved that! So inspiring... God bless you!
Those are the deserving people.god bless america!!!!! Wolverines!!!!!!
Saw this again Shirley. My old backyard, miss it! That mountain is in almost all of my childhood pictures!
Amen mrs Shirley a time of prayer and supplication in a beautiful quiet place like yours will give you ears to be in comunión with god is so special and beautiful that he will not hold anything and give you the blessings and decires of your hart and peace that surpasses all understanding that can be shown on your countenance god bless you and your family from Houston tx we love you mrs Shirley
I just hope that she didn't say what I think she said!
This type of Cafe is the best places to eat, nothing fancy just good food
This is real Texas. That woman is very passionate.
Too many people where I am in central Texas. I totally agree with her. I would love it there. I drive out that way whenever I get a chance.
Well done video. Reminds me so much of the “On The Road” series by Charles Kuralt done, I believe in the 1960’s. Hole in the wall cafes like this are much more fun than the sterile fast food boxes that now fill our country that produce stamped out tasteless food. Much better food, service and soul.Loosing too many of them.
Tom Cooper I agree, I traveled Rt. 66 several years ago, and the best part of the trip was stopping at these off the beaten path cafes 😊 the people you meet along the way are down to earth, friendly, and genuine.
name_not_important.
I Definitely AGREE TOO!
😎 👍
The BEST Tasting Meals And The BEST Service comes from those hole-in-the-wall places! ❤ ☺
🍔 🍟 🍦 🍦 💛 ❤ ☺
Fast food restaurants REALLY SUCK, it's like eating Expensive But NASTY PLASTIC food (i HATE fast food restaurants)!
😠 👎 😤 👎
@Bird Manic aaawww man,
i AM SO 😢 😢 JEALOUS, i've NEVER been on Route 66, i WANT to go see it And i also have Always, Always WANTED to Go Traveling ALL over OUR BEAUTIFUL 🇺🇸 💜 AMERICA!
You're one Lucky/Blessed Man,
AMEN!
And Yes, GOD BLESS AMERICA!
#AmericaFirst ☺ ❤
#GodBlessAmerica 🇺🇸 💜
@Bird Manic That sure sounds like A LOT of FUN, i SURE WISH to GOD to do that someday SOON 'cause IT IS FUN to Explore OUR BEAUTIFUL 🇺🇸 ❤ AMERICA!

Like Texas Country Reporter very much. Really enjoy the good stories about people's lives. Keep going Shirley!
I lived in salt flat texas from 1960to 1964.My dad worked for FAA.there at saltflat there was a run way there and a Child I watched old planes land and takeoff .I will always remember salt flat being home
l lived there in 1963
Next time I'm working out there I'm going to give it a try. This is the kind of place I'm always looking for.
Is it still open?
@@judichristopher4604 Google says permanently closed.

Yes... So Sad...
It’s so sad that this and most other of these Texas cafes are permanently closed now. Just a memory.
These are what made America great.
I agree with her whole heartedly! I had rather live in a cardboard box on the side of the road than in a big city.
You can do both.

And for Billy.
Yeah, you're probably too dumb and slow to keep up with city life.
Trivalenl Odenson nope you would be totally wrong. I have lived in several big towns over the years but I really prefer the country life.
@Bird Manic 😬 😬 😬 😬
SO SCARY, i Used to live in 🐀 🐀 RAT Infested, 💩 💩 - Hole L.A. a long time ago, way back in 2000 And NOTHING has changed about that NASTY, STINKY streets FULL of 💩💩 , pee and 🐀 🐀 "Lovely city of Angels" (L.A.)!
Wait, i take That back, Actually L.A. has Gotten 10 Times WORSE Than what it was in 2000, ha ha!
So i Guess IT DID Change, Lmao!
😝😝😝😝 ❎ ❎ 😂😂😂😂
Edit : i remember i lived with two Other room-mates in some apartments that are on East 1st Street but i forgot what the cross section was, but i do know that they used to have (Or still have??) a TINY Plaza where A LOT of Mariachi guys hang around there looking for gigs and there's a FEW local restaurants in that area Too (2 of them had some Yummy home-made meals), LOL! 😝 😂
I'm in love with Shirley!
I’m 72 and raised in Carlsbad, New Mexico. I remember this oasis well. It was all there was between Carlsbad and El Paso!
I live in Carlsbad New Mexico...
and Yes you're right... if you're going to El Paso... you had to stop.
@@judichristopher4604 Hi Judi! Since I live is Silver City now it’s been years since I have been back to Carlsbad but I never dreamed the Salt Flat Cafe would still be there and run by the same family. I can remember it was a welcome sight for an overheated car after coming through the Guadalupe Pass! I’m still in touch every few days with two of my best friends I went to school with from Carlsbad, Bobbi Morefield and Michelle Hue Singleton!
@@janicescott7338
That is sooooo Cool...
Salt Flat Cafe is closed now... (SAD)...
Carlsbad is Crazy... LOL We used to be 28 thousand people and someone told me last year we had 80,000 .
The rest is shy high now!!!
@@judichristopher4604 well I thought all the the workers had left town and it had shut down for now. ( the oil or gas CO’s). So the rent is still sky high? It’s all very sad bc Carlsbad was so beautiful and clean and the Pecos River going through was really unique. Thanks for info on Salt Flats Cafe. In the video it was looking a little rugged and I thought there probably weren’t any relatives left that wanted to be out in the middle of nowhere.lol I’m going to call my brother to tell him ab Salt Flats.
I love little holes in the wall like this! I'd go out of my way to stop there if I could. I can almost smell the coffee! Friendly, nothing fancy, but a place where you feel instantly welcome when you walk in!
i think this is the best one TCR has made so far
Nice vídeo.
What an American sweetheart♡
Great texas girl
I love you Shirley, best woman in the world.
Places like that make me cry ❤️ love ya Shirley 🤠 can't wait to visit ✌️ greetings from the Northern Peruvian Amazon Jungle 🌴🌴🌴
Awsome story
We need more stories like this sun or not
After watching this, I hope more will visit her Cafe.
I would definitely stop there to eat if I'm ever in that neck of the woods
Typical west Texas lady, I was raised in west Texas and east New Mexico. Graduation in 1965 at Odessa Permian High. I now live in east Texas, when not staying in Thibodaux, Louisiana. Us boys and girls do travel even at 74 years of age. I do miss it. You all be careful now.
Mom was born in Thibodaux. The city holds a special place in my heart! Great folks!
Wow... I read what you said, and it sounded like I could have written this...
I live in Southeastern New Mexico... I used to work in Midland/Odessa Texas... and I used to live and work in East Texas about 40 miles S. of Longview....
I am so thankful to be a born and bred Texan🇨🇱..And thankful for my fellow Texans..Best people on earth🙏🇨🇱❤
According to Google the cafe has permanently closed. It was an enjoyable video.
What a fantastic place...
We live you shirley
What a great video! Thanks so much!
+Jerry Lobdill I second that! Makes you want to jump in the car and head to Salt Flat.
She ain't lyin! I live in EL Paso Tx and have been there a few times to the Salt Flat Cafe! Love the place and the food is great! It's sad that only four yrs later this would be abandoned and look like it hadn't been in use for twenty yrs! Now it truly is a ghost town!
Good God, Good Friends, Good Food... Support her!
I'll sure stop by next time I'm on that road.
I love this
That's the part of the country where you fill the tank before leaving the house and fill it up again just to make it home. And you fill it up again just so you don't run out of gas. You had the tank at the house filled once a month
What a awesome little gem !
West Texas Home Sweet Home!!!
Yes it is beautiful.
Man! I remember when this was "4 Country Reporter". I guess I was 9 when this series started. And I remember it moving to WFAA and becoming "8 Country Reporter". My dad enjoyed this series from the get go. If it does hit the fan I think I'll go out to West Texas.
this is a great channel
Really hope too get down that way from Amarillo. Too enjoy the company and the food at Salt Flat.👍👍👍🤠🤠. Really enjoyed the TCR Visit.
But its closed now, wish I had gone when I lived outside Amarillo
I would love to visit her cafe and visit with her over lunch! 👍
Years ago she saved and warmed up two Georgia boys who got caught in a winter storm one night up in the Guadalupe Mountans.
Me: "Can I get a stack of pancakes?"
Her: "I never saw anyone eat more'n one."
Best places are like this one
that's what I call an interesting piece.
You go girl, your a true Texan
Boxed frozen burgers aren't something worth stopping for when you don't need to. No offense. Good people and honest smiles are.
Who would dislike this vid
Though this cafe has been closed for years, the Cornudas Cafe, a mile or so west is open, I heard. Right on the highway also. And I think I actually know one of Shirley's nieces...small world
At 2:16, the man on the left is my grandpa!
Oh, and to clear up the confusion about it closing... It closed before they filmed this, then it closed again after, permanently.
Unfortunately, it seems the Salt Flat Cafe has closed according to a google search.
I'm here in Odessa Texas on the contract and I just stumbled upon this video she's only fifty-seven miles from me I'm going to go check it out
I'd call first. That was 7 years ago.
57 miles you better check again El Paso is closer and it's 140 miles away.
There are many of these kinds of joints all over small town Texas. I live in the Hill Country where we have many . I try to hit them all from back roads on my Harley.
See, now this is so nice!
love from toronto .)
🤠 Americana at its best 👍 !
Just imagine all the mornings the old-timers got together over breakfast, and bullshitted `til noon drinking coffee! My kind of haunt.
I pass through there all the time get to work from El Paso. I see that small cafe there and I’m always hungry. My reason why I never stop there is for one reason, simply because it looks dead and it seems no one is even there. You all should put some sign out there with lights, I’m sure you all will get a lot of business. Now that I’ve watched this video, I will be stopping by for some burgers🙂
It's permanently closed.
It was closed a year ago when I was driving to Carlsbad caverns.
When I biked across America in Feb-Mar 2017, I went through Salt Falt, but it looked like the cafe was permanently closed. : (
kisscactus Shirley broke her leg, and closed for a few months because she is alone and has nobody to help her. She should be back on her feet soon.
I love it!
Yes
I was planning a road trip after watching this to just plan a road trip with the family from Houston. Sadly, google maps says it is permanently closed! So sad.
