- When you drive through the front gate for the first time, you’ll feel it - your Avenue Moment. Many students describe it as a sense of belonging, a feeling of home. We’d love to take credit for engineering “The Avenue Moment,” but, honestly, it’s something about this place that has a life all its own.
The first thing you notice as you drive up The Avenue is Le Fer Hall, the heart of student life. This could be your new home, full of opportunities to get involved, meet new people and make friendships that will last a lifetime.
Just across The Avenue is the Rooney Library - home to the Woods Student Center. Student organizations often hold meetings here, so you’ll learn to step up, speak out and lead with confidence. It’s also a great place to just hang out with friends, grab a sandwich at Jazzman’s between classes or listen to a band playing on stage.
After stopping for that mocha latte or munching on that bag of chips in Jazzman’s, you may want to head over to the Jeanne Knoerle Sports and Recreation Center to visit the fitness center - Club 64. The Knoerle Center is also where home basketball and volleyball games are held. Whether you feel more comfortable in the stands cheering or on the court playing, you’ll find your Pomeroy Pride in the Knoerle Center.
Guerin Hall - the administration building - is just a short walk away. You’ll want to visit the Office of Financial Aid, where the staff are ready to assist you and to answer any questions you may have about your college investment.
Walking through the Conservatory of Music building you’ll find yourself swaying to the music or tapping your toe as music therapy students beat on drums or shake tambourines. Others may be in the midst of artistic expression, voice lessons, composing music or rehearsing with the SMWC Chorale and Madrigals for an upcoming concert.
As you leave the Conservatory, you will see the beautiful tall steeple of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, often called the “Big Church.” SMWC is rooted deeply in Catholic values and traditions. Students of all faiths are welcome and encouraged to embrace their spiritual journey.
On the north end of campus, you’ll find SMWC’s expansive athletic fields. Here the Pomeroys pummel soccer balls and smash softballs. The Woods offers eight varsity sports - basketball, cross-country, golf, softball, soccer, volleyball, hunt seat and equestrian teams.
Speaking of equestrians, along the back edge of the campus, you come across a sight you’re not likely to find on many college campuses. Horses graze peacefully in a vast green field next to the Stables. This is the Mari Hulman George School of Equine Studies, where you can turn your love of horses into a career.
You loop back around, heading south back toward Le Fer, when you notice another important building - Hulman Hall. Here, you’ll find the heart of our academic learning with modernized chemistry and biology labs, a simulated hospital learning environment, painting studio, Mac lab and more.
As you come full circle, you’ll find you’re back at Le Fer Hall - your home away from home. This is where you will see your professors in the hallways, hang out in the student lounge, study with a roommate and get involved in a club meeting. The environment you choose to live in is important - so choose a place where you can aspire higher, personally, academically and spiritually.
