For those interested there is still a surviving section of the pipe on Goodrington Beach, Paignton that is now used as an outflow pipe for Clennon Valley stream as it flows into the sea. Admittedly it's not much to look at but it is historic.
There was a loss. There was a leather flap on the outside sealing the gap, and something on the train to push it aside before the piston "rod" came by. It would fall back itself and be sucked in place afterwards.
It was sealed by a leather flap that was coated with a mixture of beeswax and beef tallow. The locomotive came equipped with a small heater to melt the wax and it re-sealed it after itself. Problem is the leather weathered and cracked; and rats came in to eat the tallow. So the next train that passed would leave behind a bunch of rat viscera; which is unpleasant and definitely a disadvantage of the atmospheric railway system.

Next time I'm down that way I'll have to have a look.
There is also a section of original pipe at the Didcot Railway Centre
Good on this chap for saving the Starcross Pumping House. And that’s a pretty neat model atmospheric railway.
Nice to see the building is still standing and has a plaque to commemorate its purpose.
Who else ended up here because of Well Theres Your Problem podcast
Was just about to recommend them (episode 17). Hamburgers, rat viscera, and the most terrified train engineer of the 19th Century.
Nope, but I've just downloaded some episodes, thanks for the tip off
Fascinating!
Shame that museum is no longer there.
Why did the museum close after just eight years? And what became of the ride?
Great! More of these old videos if you have them thanks for uploading 😊👍
You can still buy them!
I still do not understand how the piston was connected to the train without having loss of pressure in the tube.

This will make a (marketing/scam) comeback any day now.

The narrator sounds suspiciously like a young Stephen Fry.
The narrator is the late, great Anton Rodgers!
Yeah it’s anton Rodgers and he’s no longer alive he’s been dead for 16 years
@@ClydebridgeStation Thank you for that info. my wife and I were trying to pick his voice.
