I’m not about the “best guitar player of all time” but shawn is definitely to me the most technically brilliant and most of the top technical guys whole heartedly agree
From 13:20 there is lot of Loudness! Can't argue the influence of Akira Takasaki to guitar playing! He is the missing link between EVH and Randy Rhoads.
Pablo Gilberto is such a guitar Gawd ! Dude’s the master shred GOAT dude ! And don’t even get me started on that legendary ADA MP1 searing lead tone dude , just wow 😍!
Black Star at around 9:15 followed by that pivot lick from Icarus Dream Suite..actually a whole bunch of old Yngwie licks..and Far Beyond The Sun a while later.. Too cool Paul! Do Y.R.O Dude!!
Gilbert is a REAL musician.. it doesnt matter about the quality of his material (cause he is a humorous guy); he has played things inside out.. hes got some of the best ears a shredder has had to offer. im not a total fan of PG anymore, but no one can deny his musicianship i get what you mean by stunt guitarist, but look into the racer X days, he stated that he and bruce would always practise for 4 hours before their gigs, note for note for each song (and a racer x song at that) total dedication
Wow it sucks that you feel that way :(. PG is easily one of the best metal/rock players IMO. Yeah maybe he doesn't have what you appreciate in those other great player,s but he's got other things that they don't have. And he certainly doesn't "suck" in any way. His vibrato is great. Tremendous rock soloing ability. Technique is out of this world. Must have been incredibly dedicated as well as naturally talented as a teenager to get technique like he has.
I don't understand how people can be so good at such young ages. Him, Jason Becker, Zakk Wylde. I guess some people have it and some (me) don't. Oh well it doesn't stop me from trying. Cool video btw.
well he says or as it seems in interviews it is more eddie, but well its just his style, his style is pretty much alot of guitar players, like yngwie and eddie plus his stuff^^
It was Eddie heavily before he found out about Yngwie. Then he went crazy on Yngwie. But even to this day he’ll probably say it’s always been Eddie and Yngwie
He he one of the original shredders. His techniques and style are his own. Though obviously influenced by Eddie and a little by Yngwie. Now Jason Becker was like an extension of Yngwie. That’s the reason when I was younger I never got interested in Yngwie, I had Perpetual Burn and it was everything Yngwie did and so much more. I still recognize that Yngwie is one of the most influential guitarists and broke new ground for rock guitarist. No disrespect.
Yep, and quite frankly, I get tired of all the hippies who say speed equals no emotion....all the bendy blues stuff was done in the 60's and 70's, and that's their thing. IF it was done again it would get boring. And to be quite honest I prefer virtuoso playing rather than 90's alternative bands.
Gilbert is such a master, his instructional vid helped my playing a lot. You can't ignore some of these guys physical qualities that lend to ultimate shred. Gilbert has those crazy long fingers...his pinky is as longer than my index. Vai has em too, Tremonti, Mustain, Buckethead etc.. not that you can't shred with small stubby fingers (EVH, Angus..)
Nicola Ferrari i got small fingers, i'm 1,60m (PG is 1,93) but i still can do his big stretches, it is mostly about training your hand, with time it get lots more flexible
pauls vibrato, even at such a young age here is on par with the greats,. his vibrato sense here is imo is still the same as today, which is a sign of a REAL musician who can LISTEN.. now what do i mean by 'on par with the greats' all it means is that it sounds organic; he didnt think, 'well, ill end with vibrato .(pause)..NOW' the vibrato sang just like a human voice, imo its the biggest thing that seperates him from the shredders: his feel (referring to his 80s days, now hes totaly different)
Malmsteen part was cleaner than Malmsteen plays it. Paul is a guitar master, as in he as mastered the guitar. That man knows everything about it and knows exactly whats going on in every song he attempts.....
Paul had been playing in bands since he was 13 years old! Freakishy amazing. If you would like to hear what he sounded like on his demo tape that got him discovered back when he was 15, I have a few of them posted.
not quite sure... Last I knew about him he was struggling to make money playing cause he was only able to do covers for the most part(had some deal with kramer if my memory is right), a lot of his original stuff didn't appeal to anyone. I am amazed he couldn't find his niche but it happens to a lot of people that are that talented... They end up either behind a desk or on the streets.
IIRC (I'm old) PG learned Trilogy back to front before it came out. He had a tape of the songs through Shrapnel. At 10:45ish You can hear him say something like "heard that one yet? yeah, I got the ol' unauthorised *mumble* copy". So this vid would be sometime before Trilogy was released.
abnzg Man, it's so nice to read this comment of yours. No one really pays attention to the details, haha. It still bothers me that the youtube upload of the famous Guitar Wars video says Paul was '19 years old' when it would take two minutes of research to see he was 18.
Perhaps people misunderstood my comments. When I referenced Zakk Wylde he had only been playing for 5 years when he got the gig for Ozzy. That is impressive even if you think Zakk "blows". BTW I never was going to give up playing guitar. And I did practice for 8 hours a day for years sometimes as much as 12 hours. I have kids now and a job so I can't do that anymore. I am lucky if I get 4 hours in. Carry on.
This looks like a paul's Open Counseling Class that he would have on a weekly basis at GIT. Back in 1986. Sometimes he would invite you to plug in and jam with him.

Its prime Gilbert footage like this which really makes it debatable he could be the fastest ever,or tied for it,Hes still one of the fastest even today, and more importantly just a great musician not just speed for speeds sake, but in his top peak prime it really seems like their is an argument for him being one of the literal fastest ever.
I also know or can admit its a strange combination of non trendy/tre ndy cliche and not suggesting Buckethead really might be worthy of being on the top 5-10 all time shred list, but just like with in particular young paul gilbert footage like this, you can see teenage Buckethead playing in lower quality older footage like this Im guessing in the late 80s or so maybe very early 90s that is arguably comparable to this,he does alot of the same kinda shred patterns now days, though still makes anywhere from noise,to good,to totally amazing music, with varying speeds, but younger prime Buckethead really could play very very similar to this right here.He did have young Gilbert as a personal trainer for at least months to a year or so,so that also makes some sense.
Buckethead was never this fast, intense and clean... What puts Gilbert at the top in my view, in terms of alternate picking and speed, are his pure, clean and simple tone, wich doesn't cover or allow mistakes, his ferocious attack, his intensity wich coupled with unparalled accuracy makes every note powerful and audible at any speed, then his effortless super-speed... There are guys faster by bpm, true, like Shawn Lane who was a unique freak (sadly passed away in 2003), and many others with strange, contrived elbow-arm's motions, but no one as clean, accurate, intense and natural as Gilbert...
No argument on the clean comparison,Buckethead is amazing and top shelf elite technical and in speed, but Gilbert is just as fast-likely faster-and overall definately for sure cleaner 100 percent.
Al Dimeola, and Paul Gilbert are my two favorite ever,Gilberts so damn good your absolutely right sure theres some that are technically faster in terms of them only focussing and dedicasting there life to the ol who has the fastest BPM test, but Gilbert is also as fast as they come, and actually makes amazing great music on top of it all,His solo albums are usually pretty great as well.
Also good point a lot of guys Such as Michael Batio use some effects which cover there errors, but with Gilbert hel some times play a solo show with very little effects and will play fast and super clean,I saw on video on youtube one random show he did where he played many of his hits on a super basic amp with little to no distortion even and somehow pulled it off.guys a total freak.
