Howe fanboy here, but if we were going to get more like "The Calling" and "Endless Dream," I wouldn't have been upset with Rabin and Kaye being around after 1994. Talk's definitely the height of Rabin-era Yes, and a highlight of Yes overall. What a great album!

I don't think they'd even say that... I've seen/heard Chris talk not nicely about Talk.
As for me, I'm a fan of all eras of YES, of course I have favorite periods/lineups.
Talk isn't my favorite, but I like to hear it occasionally.

1994 was a pivitoal year for me- a friend of my brother's had the tape...yes Tape of Talk and brought it over when we were hangin out playing videogames towards the end of the year and I really liked the sound (born in 79 I only knew of Yes from the song Owner of a Lonely Heary from the Radio) I picked up this album and Union and really liked what I heard but I wouldn't know the full extent of Yes until 1995 when my friend Brian lent me Yessongs, promising it will show you the True Power of Yes. I saw the length of songs and was like "well - I will put it on in the background while I play SNES." About two minutes into Close to the Edge (I put on CD 2 first) I stopped playing and stared at my boombox in disbelief of the magic I was hearing - I picked up all their albums up to that point and the VHS of Yesyears and they remain my favorite band. It was an honor to see them in 1996 outside of a Fox Morning show in 1997 and 1999 at the Beacon in NyC, in 1998 at Jones Beach Ny and at MSG in 2004 - I decided (even before the exile of Jon and passing of Chris) that would be my last time to see them. It was an experience that can never be topped.

@@tonusaitis Howe is one of the all time greats in progressive rock. We won guitarist of the year five years in a row when Guitar Player Magazine had their annual readers poll. This said, he’s slowed down quite a bit and his version of Yes is only fair imo. His sound from Yessongs to any recent live release is a shell of the former self. There’s no fire, tempos are slowed and everything sounds processed.
The stuff about his control freak tendencies may be true also however, Howe and Yes gave us some spectacular music that’s relevant today. He’d do ok to have some dental work and have the grape-sized mole on his face removed though.

I was at this show, opening night. It was a beautiful day, but hot as hell. Band had to have an intermission because it was so hot, the arena was even sweating. Remember tailgating and myself and my brother having a friendly argument with a couple fans on who was better, Trevor Rabin or Steve Howe. We were Trevor guys because we got into Yes in the 80’s. I’ve since come to appreciate Howe and those 70’s albums, but Trevor was a monster musician. What was great about this lineup was Trevor’s voice and what that brought to the table. He and Chris complimented Jon so much with their background vocals. Not too many bands that existed that had three voices like that in a band, amazing.

was such a good track... such a shame the whole of 'Talk' disappeared from history, some songs did deserve a lot more. When the album came out I didn't even know it had been released and found it well hidden in my local store here in Scotland. The album rocked me and gave me a true life boosting feeling... I was just 21 but had spent my whole childhood delving into the '70s whilst I was going through the '80s quite bored to be honest. I had been listening to all sorts of music coming out of a period of time spanning from 1968 to 1983, thus covering also my early years as a 'toddler listener' when The Police were my favourites... Yes came along as other bands, but by 1994 I did think they had called it a day. Such a surprise...

This tour was one of their most underrated. They performed very well, were very tight with perhaps the best live group vocals I've heard of any Yes incarnation. Had a really cool light show, too.
The crowds were smaller than usual on this tour. I think a lot of longtime hardcore Yes fans were disappointed that Howe, Wakeman, and Bruford were no longer involved in the band after the Union Tour a few years earlier and didn't go to the Talk Tour shows. I thought it was an injustice to the band considering the overall quality of the shows on this tour and they deserved bigger audiences.

When _Talk_ came out in 1994, a lot of arena rock acts felt like the rug was being pulled out from under them. Alternative rock had become rock's primary direction, and bands like Yes were being made to feel antiquated and passé. _Talk_ and the supporting tour had a lot working against it-not only did Yes have to contend with drastic changes in the marketplace, but also, the recording suffers from unevenness and a shortage of really strong material.

I was there. The Arena had no AC and it was super hot. They rehearsed in Binghamton for a week. They performed great but there were some flubs. You could get a sense that things were fresh and they were still working on a few things. The sound as fantastic - using a quad system with speakers in the back of the Arena, This seemed to cancel out the usual echo that this style of building gives you.

I think there were other forces besides that, but musically I can see his point.
The forces in play in those days though, the Yesfan base was somewhat divided, to go back to the Yeswest lineup after the era of ABWH and the promise of Union seemed a bit anticlimactic. Fans were pushing for of the classic feel of Yes. The Talk album seemed like (and it was) basically a Trevor Neo-prog album with a a bit of a tinny sound, and a de-emphasis of Chris Squire on it. Not a collaborative Yes effort. ( true, but I like Talk as well). (also Trevor felt that the Victory label did not promote the album properly). For the Talk tour Yes were still playing in Arena's but they were half full at best. Yes magazine wrote an article called "Change they Must" referring to this, and soon after the tour Yes reformed with the 70's lineup for the SLO show, did 70's type "Keys Studio" music, and that led to quite a good 96-04 era for Yes.
I agree though the album was good - the band was great on this tour.

My most vivid memory from it was the bit where a bit column of white cloth dropped down in the middle of the stage and people were floating in it - maybe even Jon Anderson? Una grande prova della formazione di Talk.Tutti in grande forma.

Man...Alan White was at the TOP of his game here. I saw 2 shows on this tour. Anderson is kinda chubby.....lol
Oh yeah....Lots of back ground vocals added in on the mix Which means they may have been triggered by someone off stage or they were playing to a sequencer or something. Not easy to pull off by any means......

Yeah Jon had gained a significant amount of weight in the early/mid 90's. I heard somewhere that at the time he was taking a lot of steroid medication for pain management.
Oh yeah - they were triggering vocals all the way back during the 90125 tour.

there's going to be two forms of yes again with anderson, rabin, wakeman; but i wish anderson; and davison would trade places, having anderson go back to yes; and have the new band be davison rabin, wakeman.

    • @designerlarry
      @designerlarry 7 років тому +3

That's not likely, when Jon Anderson had to go on medical leave, yes didn't wait for him. The decent bandmates postpone their tour until their frontman returns, because Jon's amazing voice is an instrument. As important as the others. The only Yes vocalist that was decent was Trevor Horne. He did not try to sound like Jon, nor did "Drama" try to sound like classic Yes. Horne and Downes put their Buggles thumbprint on that album and it was a fresh change until the 90125 lineup formed, another change in style , but again, all sounding great. In fact the Drama tour is the only post 1974 tour I wish I'd seen, even though Horne wasn't well received.
To address your comment though, Alan White isn't as polished, Billy Sherwood sounds like he's doing a good job on bass, and not trying to be the showman the late Chris Squire was.his bass was a lead instrument. So it gets down to Yes now being the Steve Howe show. I'm glad Jon is
In the lineup. Curious to hear their new project.

that pretty much covers it. i agree when a founding member who not only is the lead singer;but songwriter as well gets ill,you don't permanently replace him. jon was willing to return if they would've asked. from what i heard jon say in an interview was that none of the yes members even came to see him in the hospital;or phoned him. not exactly a way to treat someone you've worked with for over 40 years.

simply because anderson;and howe is classic yes being together they wrote most of the classic yes material along with the late chris squire. in other words if there's going to be a yes at all it should be with jon anderson on vocals. trevor rabin could rejoin along with wakeman too;and it would be like when they did the union album. not sure where davison would fit in to the mix ? maybe co lead singer;and guitar ?

      Same for me.
Having seen Yes perform 20 times in the 70s and Drama line up in 1980.
Then the 80s Yes happened and although there were still 4 English guys in this line up, I always saw the Trevor Rabin line up, as the American
Version of Yes and the Steve Howe line up as the English version.

I love Yes...the real pre-'79 band...but Jon looked like a fat chick back then...and Donny Osmond on guitar? Seriously, I miss Chris...even though he & Greg Lake really let themselves go...but Chris lost his mind when he conscripted frigging BUGGLES to fill out the line-up!!
The trib band calling itself Yes makes me sad. I wish JonD would play bas for ARW and sing harmonies with JonA...maybe they could t attempt some Olias Live?

Sorry, but: Boring intro, boring show. That is not Yes on stage, it is the Trevor Rabin rock band. And this band is just mediocrely. There are six musicians on stage (not five), but all the lights on Trevor.
My first Yes show: Westfalenhalle Dortmund, Germany on April 16th, 1974 (Tales from Topographic Oceans Tour).
My best Yes concert (cuz I stood very very close to Chris) at the famous Hohentwiel Fortress Ruins/Germany on July 17th, 2003.
The most impressive Yes show for me: Yes Symphonic in the famous Gewandhaus/Leipzig, Germany on November 10th, 2001.

To say, that this line-up wasn't Yes wouldn't do them justice. Up until 1981 we already had Yes changing their line-up six times:
      1968-70: Jon Anderson/Peter Banks/Bill Bruford/Tony Kaye/Chris Squire
      1970-71: Jon Anderson/Bill Bruford/Steve Howe/Tony Kaye/Chris Squire
      1971-72: Jon Anderson/Bill Bruford/Steve Howe/Chris Squire/Rick Wakeman
      1972-74: Jon Anderson/Steve Howe/Chris Squire/Rick Wakeman/Alan White
      1974-76: Jon Anderson/Steve Howe/Patrick Moraz/Chris Squire/Alan White
      1976-80: Jon Anderson/Steve Howe/Chris Squire/Rick Wakeman/Alan White
      1980-81: Geoff Downes/Trevor Horn/Steve Howe/Chris Squire/Alan White
Not to mention that the line-up on 90125, "Big Generator" and "Talk" had three founding members, more than on "Relayer" or "Drama".
