      I didn't even notice that. I wasn't born until 1995, so I wouldn't know it's 90's if it sounds 80's.

      High school for me. Also new guitarist (Warren from other 80's band Missing Persons), so a bit of a different sound on these albums.

      I wasn't a huge fan of Duran Duran during the 80s while in high school (although I really liked "Save a Prayer"; but this song (which was really a bit of a comeback for them after they had sort of split with half forming Arcadia and half forming Power Station) really showed how they had matured as writers in the interim. I really liked this one.

      I honestly think the boys firing their managers hurt their upward trajectory. It's not a coincidence that them not managing DD's career aligns with their stock dropping with each album release. Their record company (Capitol) had them in a pay for play situation with this one, they had to show them something before they could get more money to finish the record, and they did.
      They would eventually get dropped after the next two records.

    This song came out when I was in rehab. It was very poignant and spoke to me whe I was in the midst of trying to get back to my normal life.
    Now it reminds me of all the people I've lost including my oldest daughter, both parents, and a best friend. Clawing my way through grief is different, because the 'ordinary world' I want so desperately to get back to no longer exists. 💔😔 💔

      Simon Le Bon after the 1986 death of his friend David Miles: "I wrote this song called “Do You Believe In Shame?,” and in that song I dedicated a little part of myself to Dave Miles - ‘cause I believe there’s a little part of you inside of me that’ll never die.’ And it was like asking a ghost to come and take up residence inside your head. And that’s how I felt, and I carried that around for six years. And then right around when we were writing this song, I knew that I had to be able to say goodbye. I thought about him every day, and I realized that I wanted to get on with my own life…and I realized it was about being able to say 'yes, my friend is gone, and I loved you, but you’re not here anymore, and I’ve got to get on with life.’ And I wanted to have an ordinary life. That was what inspired the lyric to this song. I don’t want to feel bad anymore. I want to be able to say goodbye.
      Simon Le Bon states in another interview, "We wrote ‘Ordinary World’ while the first Gulf War was on. The lines, ‘Papers in the roadside tell of suffering and greed/ feared today, forgot tomorrow / Here beside the news of holy war and holy need / ours is just a little sorrowed talk’ put everything in perspective. It makes you realize that a story about two people is just a tiny part of this huge story which is called humanity.”

    Written in response to the suicide of a close friend of Simon Le Bon's. I agree with Andy about the first verse. Trying to do anything to cut the quiet, but "can't escape the ghost of you". I was pleasantly surprised when this came out in '93. I never really cared for Duran Duran, but this was a heartfelt, sorrowful, well crafted ballad I was not expecting from them. Definitely respected them after this.

      Le Bon's close & childhood friend's name is David Miles, who passed away in 1986. The song was also about the Gulf War (1990-1991). Le Bon wrote the lyrics to his passing with Do You Believe in Shame? (1988). He followed this song up with Ordinary World (1992) & concluded with Out of My Mind (1997) making this a trilogy about the loss of Miles.
      Simon Le Bon after the 1986 death of his friend David Miles: "I wrote this song called “Do You Believe In Shame,” and in that song I dedicated a little part of myself to Dave Miles - ‘cause I believe there’s a little part of you inside of me that’ll never die.’ And it was like asking a ghost to come and take up residence inside your head. The lead singer, Simon Le Bon, wrote this. It’s about trying to get over the death of a best friend of his. Duran Duran wasn’t just an 80s band. They’re still making music. They’ve had so many good songs over the years.

    • @billw715

      The lyrics were written by Le Bon about the loss of his childhood and close friend, David Miles. And Ordinary World is the 2nd song of three about Le Bon's grief about his friend.

      Simon Le Bon wrote the lyrics, but ex-Frank Zappa and Missing Persons guitarist Warren Cuccurullo wrote the music. He had joined them in the early 90s, after original guitarist Andy Taylor left the band

    • @eamonconnelly8029
      @eamonconnelly8029 3 місяці тому

      @@tomfabozzi5353 Cuccurullo wrote his music for his guitar parts like Le Bon wrote the melody & chorus, like John Taylor wrote his bass lines and Nick Rhodes wrote his keyboard parts for Ordinary World and like they do for every Duran Duran song. The group does not have one songwriter nor does the group write songs on their own and bring it to the band. The group gets together with a clean slate for each album and they jam together to come up with songs, and they develop the songs together. So, you are incorrect that "Cuccurullo wrote the music" for this or any Duran Duran song. The band is a democracy & they all write songs together. The only thing they do individually is to come up with their instrumentation parts. That's it but their songs are written collectively as a band in the studio.
      And this has been the process since the 80s. When the band goes to make their next album, and as they have done for decades, they will all go to the studio, jam together and wash, rinse & repeat the process over. They will write their songs in that studio all together as a band.

    • @billw715
      @billw715 2 місяці тому

      @@tomfabozzi5353Yes, Warren Cuccurullo became a member of Duran Duran (1990) four years after Andy Taylor quit Duran Duran (1986) & remained in Duran Duran until they kicked him out of the band in 2001. And no, Cuccurullo did not write "all" the music as you assume. Every Duran Duran fan knows the band creates & writes songs collectively & share in that process.

    This Album came out in 1992. Almost 10 years after their hay-day. "Come Undone" from is album this is outstanding too. It felt like a 'coming of age' performance. It was like they eschewed their "New Wave" pop entrance on the music scene in the early 80's.. 7 & the Ragged Tiger was such a great milestone album for them, then they seemed to disappear from top 40 music charts only to return with this in the 90's.
    All the best,

      The song Ordinary World was broadcast on radio in the Fall of 1992 & released as a single in December 1992. The album from this track, aka The Wedding Album, was released on February 15, 1993. "Hedey" is defined as "the period of a person's or thing's greatest success, popularity." Duran Duran reached their "heydey" in 1985- not in 1982. Their rise & hysteria was just initiating in 1982.

    The thin sound is no doubt because it is the 90's! When all analog gear including iconic compressors like the 1176 and LA-2A's were literally being used as doorstops. Everything was recorded into Sony DASH digital recorders. Any 'noise' was evil incarnate, everything had to sound clean, bright, pristine. Now we know that didn't pan out the way producers and recording engineers and record companies thought it would. All of that analog gear is back and now those doorstops cost thousands of dollars. Having said that this song is so great that it doesn't matter what decade it would've come out of, it would've been great no matter what. Warren Cuccurullo (Frank Zappa, Missing Persons) who had replaced Andy Taylor by now and co-wrote the song is the song centre of gravity. The atonal bass fills by John Taylor are amazing also and I think this is Simon's best vocal ever. Duran's masterpiece.

    Amazing reaction! It was really moving to see how affected Andy was by this song, especially by the lyrics. As others have said this is a 90s song, but that doesn’t take away from its greatness at all. In fact, DD have been consistently making good music since they first appeared on the scene more than 40 years ago. More Duran Duran - their atmospheric 80s ballad “Save a Prayer,” their other big hit from ‘93 “Come Undone,” and their 2007 release with a super indie sound - “Box Full O’ Honey.” And another song that hits like “Ordinary World” but is truly from the ‘80s is “Under the Milky Way” by The Church!
