Do you remember the first time you heard "Strange Fruit"?

Please look into your comment section towards the bottom. On every post the same person is trashing the host. It’s not cool. I enjoy the real and what the ladies bring .

I'm sure I heard it before, but I really HEARD in an international studies class. I and my black girlfriend, two of four in the whole class, cried through it.

In Lady Sings the Blues 1973. And then reading about it in Ladyday’s autobiography and buying an LP called the commodore days hearing the first recording. It prompted my Learning about both the songs creation and the history it describes. That’s nearly 50 years ago and it still moves me.

Yes. I was a teen & had a Sounds of Blackness CD on repeat as I slept. I had heard it but the 1st time I actually *HEARD* it was that night when I woke to "blood on the leaves... blood at the root... black bodies swingin'..."
It scared the mess out of me.

The lyrics to Strange Fruit are so eerie and haunting. I have trouble singing that song because the words paint such a horribly vivid image for me. 🎶 🎙

The way she articulated the legacy of the systems put into place by Hoover was so on point.

I was a little annoyed and frustrated by the hosts when she was talking about Strange Fruit. Jeannie tried to chime in at one point and it felt disrespectful because she will never understand the pain behind that song. And while the “where is your mom joke” was funny it wasn’t appropriate to make a lighthearted comment at that time.

A phenomenal film. A phenomenal lead actress. So glad this story was told. Thanks to Lee Daniels for insisting the junkie narrative is not all that we know now.

In my opinion it's not what "we know now" it's what most of the world believes because of the narrative spun by Higher Officials about persons of color. There only seemed to be a few ways to be painted as a black person who felt it was wrong for the treatment of their people and wanted change. Historical accuracy of a series or movie is more important then the documented accuracy of the United States and the treatment of it's inhabitants or how food or medication could affect you later in life or I don't know the accuracy of "is it a moon or planet" or being correct about the weather. I have always wondered why the world is so easily manipulated into caring about celebrities gossip then what truly affects our rights as "citizens" in our city, county, state. Sorry to ramble but it just came
