Imma be honest, Frontiers is not a good place to start when it comes to Sonic games. It is probably the hardest they've ever tried with retaining a continuity with previous games, the game's narrative is full of references, flashbacks and plot points being brought back from older games, and they do it all the time too, not once every 5 hours or something. It is the best thing ever if you're already a Sonic fan but for a newcomer or a hater like you (your words, not mine 😂) it will just be confusing. Gotta say however, you're missing out by not being a fan in general, I'd say you should definitely give them another chance.
