to be honest, i really prefer the older style of deathcore vocals because theyre much more visceral and effective at conveying anger/pain, whereas the modern super compressed and theatric style doesnt do that as well for me. there are exceptions (like alex teyens performance on the Born Hanged EP) but for the most part i like the classic style.
Born Hanged is such a banger album and Alex is a beast.

I kind of appreciate this reverence they have as vocal you can't really get anymore just due to the vocalists screaming incorrectly.
All of that era have fucked up vocals and we thank them for their service.
older style they were at least trying to annunciate words too, new style is make most brutal noise i possibly can and not even try say the words the lyrics apparently are meant to say
Will’s is better on terms of vocal technique (whaddaya expect on quality for a 2006 deathcore song), but Oli’s voice serves the song way better simply because it’s what the song was written for.
It's nuts how close he can get though, specially since Oli was one of those vocalists that you could really hear his thick northern accent through. Or at least I could. And Will is Puerto Rican/American accent
15:15 as a person without perfect pitch, I can definitely comfirm, that is 100% is a note. No doubt.

I thought it was C at first, then I went to check if it is on piano and I was right but I can't say I have perfect pitch, half notes always get me.. could have perfect pitch if I would put some work on it but I don't care that much and can't see the point other than flexin' :D

I agree. I'm engrossed by wills crazy vocals but Oli sounds better. Think will is over doing it with the squeels. Love his cover of hypnosis by sleep token.

Will’s version is the first time I liked a cover enough to download it. I love both versions but his Recreant cover with Nik Nocturnal is INSANE and I kinda prefer that one over the original
Who sang recreant 1st? Not BMTH? I lived that with Nik nocturnal. And I'm not a huge fan of that style of deathcore. Hes the only 1 that has captivated me on some level and I don't know why. I've only just got to the point where I can listen to BMTH deathcore music. If you'd told me that a few years ago I'd have told you to Fuck off.😂😂 It really does grow on you I'm the biggest BMTH fan ever and I hated the band to start with. Daughter playing true friends on repeat. I hated that's the spirit but Sempiternal won me over instantly. Now I love that's the spirit. Crazy 🤣

@@carolinecoy3164 Recreant is Chelsea Grin. But i do agree with you on old BMTH being a hard listen, it took me a while of being into both BMTH AND Deathcore before i really started to appreciate it. The first album that got into BMTH was That's The Spirit, but Sempiternal quickly became my favorite. as for Deathcore, Chelsea Grin was the first band that got me into it with The Isnis, and then i absolutely fell in love with Whitechapel and never stopped listening to deathcore after that point. Still, those old BMTH tracks were still hard to listen to, especially since the production is far from being the best and it's very noisy and distorted. but even then, i still prefer the original BMTH version over Will's version, just because i think Oli has a better natural voice tone, even if not anywhere near as technical as Will

Just laying off it for a while as I over played it for way too long. I do that with awesome albums 😂😂. Play them on shuffle is the best. Never know what ya guna get. 🤪
My music taste is very out there though. I love George Michael and Neil diamond when I'm in the mood. Depeche mode and Metallica too. Bit of all sorts here and there. Metallica's early thrash stuff more so though. And David Bowie is up there in my favourites too. Variety is everything with music. Probably why BMTH are my current fave. They cover most moods. Can make a head rattling playlist or a chill out 1. 🤪

Should have done a 3 way with infant annihilators cover when Dan Watson was the vocalist. That was the original cover and probably the best version. Plus the video for that with Aron in the borate thong. When he hip thrusts to the break down, so fing funny. Eddie and Aron really punched up the instrumental, added alot to it.
Original Pray for plagues is in a place of my heart that nothing can replace. I absolutely love will I just saw him and the acacia strain and it blew my face off. But im 30 so in 06 I was in the midst of job for a cowboy and bmth when they were doing pray for plagues so it is special for me. I still thoroughly enjoy wills version but it's basically a COMPLETELY different song ya know? Anyways I love both. But bmth from then is sentimental to me

I'd love to see black metal! any form of it. They have so many amazing sounding techniques, and absolutely love the banshee screams alot of them do such as Ultar's live performances

as much of a staple this song is done by Oli, I just simply prefer Will. More range and better tone than Oli has ever had I just prefer that.

Oli handsdown, the song is the iconic sound of early 2000s deathcore and nobody can capture that better than Oli.

I absolutely love both. Grew up with the original which I love a lot, but I also love Will's take on it.
Im honestly surprised that someone of your caliber is impressed with bring me the horizon in general haha. After watching your viking reaction a couple weeks ago, I've learned a lot from you, man. My style is the kinda banshee shriek highs and tough guy lows of Jesse Leach and to some extent Frankie Palmeri...but your viking reaction has tons of advice I have taken to heart. I'm waiting for someone to tell me how you do this kinda stuff and also can switch to state champs style poppier singing which is something else I practice alot. Doing both of these kinds of vocals in one song is a feat I want to conquer. If I spend two hours working on screams though, I can't sing for shit afterward. Anytime I've made an album, I'll get all cleans done first on every song and then do the screams afterward. I know there are people that go from demon screams to pop croons in one take though and I just don't get how they do it, it's crazy.
Probably a hard answer to try to explain but how can you hut the banshee highs? I've been trying to attack them the same way I have been my standard highs but I can't kick in to that banshee level
bit late of a reply but just in case you haven't discovered it on your own yet, you are screaming with the wrong technique that is damaging you if you're unable to switch between singing and screaming.

The vocal clarity argument always gets me lol. I always say that in metal, the vocals are more of an instrument as opposed to a way to convey lyrics. Just me lol

I prefer the OG. I'm not a fan of modern deathcore, the vocals being one of the main issues. I'm same with you with intelligibility, though. I love hearing dumb, silly noises.
I feel like Will has made a remastered version of what pray for plagues would sound like today
Which i can see how many people would prefer it over the original
But the original is well the original, it has a nostalgic feel to it which is hard to overlook
So I'd say that there is no better, maybe if you compeared to vocals which one is better sure than Will, but it's still whatever you like and that's that

If Will had done those pitched mid shouts over that two step sorta section i think it would be perfect. I did like the more slam and snarling stuff for the verse and chorus sections he did them in. Just think his shout would have fit the song more
in terms of instrumental, what im always telling people is that you cant just reproduce Count Your Blessing sound with properly functioning AMP, broken AMP is the reason why its so unique XD

i slightly prefer the original. i love the new style of vocals, deathcore vocalists do. but sometimes just a classic normal deathcore vocals style just fits certain songs more, imo. this song is an example of that

This video trips me out. It is clearly programmed drums but they got a video of a guy "playing it".
The whole video is likely them playing along to a mastered track and then synced up to the song. Most music videos aren't actually live.
@@KardavoxAcademy I can be wrong. But if the sound is from an actual take and not programmed it must be heavily sample replaced and quantizised. The snare has no dynamics whatsoever. The cymbals feel disconected to eachother in a typical programmed fasion. But the thing that stuck out to me the most are the fill at 14:17. But yeah can be a lot of sample replacement and a lot of editing, super common in this type of genre.

It seems like Will’s version of it lacks the vocal range of the original, in the sense that you’ll hear Oli make strange high pitched screams followed by deep ones. It’s not bad, it’s just noticeably different.

I LOVE Will! But for this specific song I 100000% disagree… Oli.. as much as his technique was wrong by today’s standards, mind you.. back in the mid 2000s we didn’t have the “internet” we have now. End of story. Oli has this all day!!! Given circumstances, time period, teaching experience, and learning experience…. Oli Mutha Fuckin Sykes!! Has this song all day!!! Like I said I LOVE Will!! But Oli doing this in a time where things were different? Oli wins. Hands down.

It's cool to be able to discern the lyrics just from the vocal track and all, but vocals in this context are as much about pure instrumentation as the guitar and drums, words are irrelevant.

Will did it better because he knows how to scream correctly. Oliver does not, to the point he can not scream anymore and had to have surgery on his vocal cords.

It's kinda the same as comparing Kobe to MJ. Even if the whole scene has advanced, we wouldn't have the greats of today without the one's who came before. Will definitely has better technique, but the original just got that raw brutality to it.
I think Will is technically better, and I prefer his work with Lorna by miles, but for some reason I just prefer Oli on this. Maybe cos it's what I grew up with and I don't like change, maybe it's the intelligibility or something else entirely.

I couldn’t have said it better. The music is nostalgic as hell, and brings back a ton of memories, but it’s not very good quality. Don’t get me wrong, I love it though. Same as chiodos 😂

@StevelandCleamer my first deathcore bands were all shall perish, and as blood runs black around 06-07, they were my gateways. Bring me was in there, too as they blew up around the same time. But while deathcore in general has long left bring me behind I still think all shall perish is peak melodic deathcore till this day.
