- Love, It Was Not is a tragic love story between a prisoner and a Nazi. Beautiful and full of life, Helena Citron, is taken to Auschwitz as a young woman, and soon finds unlikely solace under the protection of Franz Wunsch, a high-ranking SS officer who falls in love with her and her magnetic singing voice. Risking execution if caught, they went on with their forbidden relationship until the war ended and the camp was liberated.
Thirty years later, a letter arrives from Wunsch's wife asking Helena to “return the favor”- testify on Wunsch's behalf. Faced with an impossible decision, Helena must choose. Will she help the man who brutalized so many lives, but saved hers?

She didn't completely defend him.
She admitted he did terrible things to other jews and more importantly when he tried to contact her she refused to communicate with him.
Her husband's family from isreal was in the same kibbutz as some of my family members and the story was well known.
She did what she had to do to survive.
Whatever love may have existed was temporary.

Two people who lived know what they felt- all else is our own interpretation from the outside. My own interpretation is that this man found no courage to defy until Helena. He was not saint by half. Understatement! But are we really going to deny Helena the right of being more than Jewish! She was a beautiful woman. The power dynamic was majorly imbalanced but Franz in the end did what he could to save her life. And she in return did not deny his humanity- that he found in hell on earth! If we forget labels and situation- they were two human beings who found each other in the darkness and lit a small flame. We cannot undo the past- but that flame should give us all hope in the darkness!
It is just a shame that she defended him. He just saved her and her sister but this man stay a criminal.

If this SS man was used by your gawd to help her, there is something wrong with that gawd!!! He is almighty and omniscient yet he used only one man to save only one woman????? Why not save the whole jewish population from their misery????? I know you will add "oh but gawd is testing people for their faith that's why he let them suffer......." blah blah blah. Your gawd never existed in the first place, PERIOD!!! You're just living your delusional belief and romantiicize it's divinity and make up these illusions of a benevolent gawd in a cruel world!!! You don't know the reason why some SS soldiers and guards have to follow what their superiors told them to do. If he disobeyed his superiors, his life and the lives of his immediate family and the persons he love is at stake too. However it's against their will, they have no choice but to do evil acts and horrendous crimes as per the orders of their higher ranking superiors. Yet, in most cases, some SS soldiers blinded by hate, power, and greed, are just straightforward evil!! This story of Franz and Helena is a testament of LOVE CONQUERS HATE. However in small meaningful ways, Franz was able to show Helena a pure form of love devoid of their situation and the differences between them. Franz may not be able to help all the jewish population alone due to restrictions and their cruel environment, but at least he was able to save one, and that is Helena and her sister. For Helena, she saw him as a human being capable of love that's why she defended him!! That is the power of LOVE!!!
