  • Today @Working Horses With Jim we are working in the garden and in the fields with the horses. Abby came over to help with cultivating the garden, along with Lady, and later the Percherons and I work on raking hay in the field.
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Cultivating the garden brings back memories. I was about five when Dad came in for lunch from cultivating corn with a one row cultivator and Colonel, the remaining draft horse on the farm. He took me to the field with him after lunch stating it wasn't easy guiding the horse with the long reins and the cultivator too. I was "voluntold" to guide the horse. Old Colonel and I went many a mile up and down those corn rows. He had the procedure down, in reality, I was along for the ride.

Your videos bring back to the story’s my grand father told us of logging in Maine with horses
And how the horse would drag the logs from the woods to the river by themselves after being showed the trail he said some could get themselves un stuck from problems they encountered
My grand father was normally on the woods end and someone else on other end of trip

Awwwww shucks,.....we didn't get to see Abby standing up on the horses back, like last year. Hope you are feeling better Abby. 60+ years ago, I would have never thought that I would one day see a beautiful lady sitting on the back of a horse checking her cell phone. 60+ years ago, we didn't even know what a cell phone was. We still had party lines with a 4-digit phone number.

@@WorkingHorsesWithJim Yes, the party line days, local four digit numbers and five miles away you were charged long distance. Now the local calls are 10 digits, all calls within the US are free, and you can make free worldwide calls using Facebook.
So much has changed except I still don't own a smart phone.

This is a comment directed to other non-gardener like myself. Cultivating a garden is a form of weed control. Rather than just cutting off the visible green part of the weed such as with a weed wacker that actually enhances weed propagation, the spiked fingers reach underneath the weed roots to expose them to the air so the whole plant will die.

So enjoyable to watch you all with the horses and farming implements. I’m a newer subscriber in 2022. My grandparents and great grandparents were farmers in rural central Missouri. And I’ve got a photo of great grandparents standing, posing for photo with their horse. Watching you helping me imagine how they worked on their land.

I remember when grandpa would harness the team, and then would set me on one and ground drive the team to the equipment he was going to use. He would get me down and I would walk back to the house and he would go to the field. Great memories, and I just turned 79.

This was the first time I’ve ever seen your video I think and I really enjoyed it. I also thought your chicken tractor was quite a nice design and that you should try to sell it or share it on the Internet/UA-cam. I think other farmers could use it! XK yes I don’t wanna pick it up you could just continue to use it as a demonstration for your chickens and guineas. But I really love how you have your free range area fenced in and attached to the for roosting at night as well. Excellent design and I truly enjoyed watching your Percherons work, even though, I would’ve enjoyed seeing them in more detail hooked up in terms of and working for pace and how they respond to your command, but I do recognize that you had company at the time this video was made. Maybe if I go back and look at other videos I’ll find the Percheron so working. They are a magnificent breed oh and they are magnificent at all! I also noticed how beautiful and well manicured your lawn was and so I wanted to comment on that as well so thank you for that beautiful scenery! Just beautiful♥️❣️❣️❣️❣️

Jim does Buck weave almost all the time? Do you always harness Ken first? Maybe Buck is just getting anxious? If you harness him first maybe that would change his behavior?? Some horses stand quietly for a while and then act like "Hey! You're taking to long! Let's go!" and start pawing. Best to ignore the pawing/weaving rather than reacting to it which seems to act like a reward. He is a good horse. Appreciate you and your family's efforts.

I used to be a Hay Dealer, delivered to a lot of stables down state NY, and Ct, and after unloading I would walk thru and check out the horses. and got to see a lot of them with their heads out the stall windows weaving back and forth not too strange to see two or three in a 30-40 horse stable. the ones that used to amaze me, were the Budweiser teams. Seen them down to Ox ridge Hunt club in Ct and had opportunity to walk up to them in their stalls and the thing that amazed me were the size of their heads compared to the jumpers or smaller horses. they wre Huge!. Clydesdales are big!. Thanks again Jim for another great video, Hope Abby's throat is ok. thanks for sharing.

For weed control you will find that planting buckwheat does a great job. You can plant half the garden one year and the other half the next year. You will see a big difference with the weeds. Buckwheat is among the first seeds that settlers brought with them for Europe when they started settling our continent. It is also ideal for planting in newly cleared land even in between stumps.

as soon as it rains on those rocks in your garden they can sprout and turn into gravel. That way you can have a gravel bed.

Better to have a weaver than a cribber! But I guess he just weaves when you are harnessing him, not all the time. I have had em weave all day long in the stall. I live in Amish county here in Oklahoma, but they use tractors for everything, except for church. On the way to town this morning, on a big ranch here, they were cutting hay on about a half a section of ground. I counted 7 mowers in the field, they were laying down the hay. They will use 3 or 4 balers to bale, round bales of course.

Same situation with Amish in SC Kansas, horse and buggy for church, tractors for everything else. Our area has divided sects, Steelers (steel wheels covered in rubber), Air filled tires, no cabs, third, tractors with cabs plus air conditioning and homes with electric.

@@erikatowle8695 I asked an older Amish, when did tractors start being used in SC Kansas, he thought about the late 30's. Larger acres, required for grain, was more than horses could handle while maintaining a thriving Amish community.
