Med 3 is so underrated!
Did you ever notice the similarities between the tragica’s second theme and that first excerpt from the third concerto? I only noticed it now. Medtner is such a great composer. I really hope he continues to get more recognition over the years because he really deserves it.
The Sonata Reminiscenza always gives me goosebumps. Gilels is one of my favorites, but the best rendition of that work has to be Ginzburg's.
Yes that moment in 3rd movement of 2nd piano concerto is really awesome. Hamelin is also great here.
I love this series of video, hope to see more!
@@juliendespois508 Rach’s coming soon ;)
Another great moments are the second A theme from his sonata G minor, the end of development of War sonata, practically every minute of his quintet (mainly the coda), or skazka Op. 2 No 2. Coda of Op. 34 no 1, or Op. 20 no 2, coda of Sonata epica or the second theme of 1st violin sonata. Sonata romantica has also great passages. My another favourites are his fuggues from sonata ballad, Sonata Minnaciosa, 2nd piano concerto or in Opus 58 No 2.
Such a good channel, thank you for a great job!
Thanks for the kind comment ;)
I like pc3 last movement, especially the coda brass melodies.
OMG!!! SOMEONE DID THIS!!! YAY
Some of my choices
Sonata Ballade, Op.27
Skazki, Op.26 No.3
Forgotten Melodies, Op 38, No.7 - 8, Danza silvestra - Alla Reminiscenza
Sonata Romantica, Op.53 No.1, Mvt.1
Sonata Idyll, Op.56, Mvt.1
I've never listened to the Skazki or and the Sonata Idyll, I'll give it a try, thanks.
@@PianoConcerto-wn2ud Most of his beautiful melodies and some experimental ideas hiding in the Skazki (a.k.a. Fairy Tales, Folk Tales).
@@PianoConcerto-wn2udListen to them, they are gems. I recommend opus 20, opus 34, opus 42 (mainly the second skazka) and the opus 51
@@teodorb.p.composeri adore the last of the op.51! It’s so evocative, I always envision that scene from Snow White where the gnomes are marching in the forest on their way to the mines. I don’t know why but I think it fits so well.
@@Medtner26 Yeah, I adore the whole opus, but the last two are my favourite. But No 5 is good only in Medtner's intepretation, Tozer played it too mechanicaly...
One man's meat, as they say. Unfortunately these excerpts have failed to convert me to be an ardent admirer of Medtner's music. To me, there often seems to be a certain awkwardness in structure/flow and a lack of memorable themes/melodies overall. I guess I've been spoiled by Rachmaninov and Prokofiev. So I'm not surprised that his music - the concerti, etc - is so rarely programmed (except perhaps in Russia?). But just my own personal opinion of course! And I will listen to the excerpts recommended in the comments below to see if they change my current opinion, which is that (to paraphrase Woody Allen's words) he is a second rate composer, but as second rate composers go, he is first rate!

Medtner Night wind is also my fav indeed. There's also a lot fairy tales especially op 26 no 3, op 8 no 1, 48 no 2, 51 no 1. Sonata romantica, minacciosa and tragica is enormous. Pc 1 have a lot gigantic moments. Theres also Violin sonata epica no 3 great as well
I like the sonata romantica and Minaccisiossa
The piano concerto no 2 is op no 50 not 60, but fro the rest great video
HELL NO you didnt even mention the last bars of medtners round dance, the staccato-legato combination by the two pianos and the dreamy restatement of the main motif???????????????? there will be violence
What’s the opening excerpt?
Second piano concerto, first movement, less than two minutes after the beginning.
