It can be yeah but you can try to find a Free Company (the games' version of guilds) that offer what you're looking for. The FF14 community finder is a good spot to find potention FC's to join and run things with.
I support those claim currently in shadowbringer, still a sprout but I did a savage got my fire birdy horse the fox and a tones of friends join a big fc with events if your not social like me it will make things more natural

The reason some people (including myself) dislike subscription services is often not because we're used to free to play games, as that's a bit of an extreme, we're just used to paying for games once and being able to play them until the servers are shut down. But I do understand non-F2P MMOs are basically all subscription based.
As someone who is in the camp of being surprised its not free to play, I understand both sides. On one hand its great to try a game for free without paying (thank God there's that free trial they offer which is huge) but also alot of those f2p games get way too hefty on the micro-transactions. Predatory and p2w (I did alot of research for mmo's so i know a bit) aspects always *seem* rampent in them. With subscription one's it seems like they stay away from it and focus is more on the game. Kind of like buying a single player game like elden ring, compete with optional but really good dlc/micro-transactions that don't get in the way. Not arguing with you tho just expanding on things. SE was really smart to add in a free trial for people like me who never played an mmo and wanna start without paying a subscription that will go away once/if i decide I don't like it.

No they are not basically all subscription based. playing mmos for years and that's the first one with subscription I thinking about to play. I have no problem with buying a game and the dlcs for 200 euro and then now and then in-game things for real money or best example warframe free to play, you can get EVERYTHING for free BUT people are spending their money, I spent like 1k dollars over few months^^ BCS this game and the devs are such a gem. But I hate the subscription thing in FF, it's annoying and complicated to get it u can't even do it from ps store, steam etc directly, need to pay with credit card or debit. Sometimes I have to take a break for a week from a game but that's wasted playtime then. This is the only reason I never touched final fantasy online.

Besides of that you are buying the base game + the dlcs for over 100 euro/dollar + you can buy things in-game for real money. Tadaaa this way it is possible to develop and update a game for years. Other games can do it too. Destiny, warframe are best examples. Ff14 is not a f2p game u are paying a lot of money for this game from beginning on only to get it. Then again 15 Euro per month for a subscription is to expensive and it's forcing u to play, u can't take a break bcs u paid for the playtime. I had to quit because I am forced into a 24 man raid to continue game and I choose Paliding, therefore I had to tank, but I died alot. I suck, im older. They game cannot prgress until you complete this raid. So you cant actually solo. I would love to keep playing. If you know how to progress without this raid, please let me know. Theres nothing worse than people making fun of you when you suck as a tank. Zero fun, I should have picked a backgroung toon.
i would just say in the beginning "hey im now and have no idea how to tank this raid" someone will explain it and 9/10 ppl are encourging. we spent over an 1 hour once on an extreme trial bc the tank kept facing the boss towards the party and running around instead of standing still and no one B****'ed once. instead everyone was like "hey tank just stand on marker" "hey tank we got this" exc. if its really that big a deal level up a dps job and do that particular raid as DPS. can do it one the same character and everything.
That's really rough, tanking is a super high responsibility job and I understand both sides, nobody should be mean to you though and it's a total fault of the game design to drop that on you. FF players should be used to that.... If that's how the game is designed.

I think it's a good idea to tell the people right before how it is and ask for help, most of them will help.
You can choose whatever you want fam. I for myself do like playing this game like a true jrpg. Msq then doing side quests then move to the next area for new msq and side quests. That's how I play. I have done every msq, blue quest, and side quest up until the end of dawntrail. But that's me. I find enjoyment in that. You do what you find enjoyment in. 👍
Everything is great but the actual exploration in this game is pretty weak, after playing guild wars 2 theres just so much in terms of the exploration content here that pales in comparison. I think that is my biggest issue with ffxiv. "vast" open world, its honestly more comparable to xenoblade chronicles with instanced areas. Those areas have a LOT of invisible walls though. You also have to watch and spoil raids before going in.
exploration in Guild Wars 2 is so weak, Idk what you're talking about, not saying this is any better but GW2's landscapes feel so bland and lifeless other than the enemies located there

They did an overall graphics upgrade on the 7.0 update, for Dawntrail. The expacs release updates for some core system in the game for each, such as shuffled moves or tweaked game balance. You can expect to have a better core experience, but you will have to pay to experience the story and environments of the later expansions.
I stopped playing the game last year (managed to finish til Endwalker). Everything just became too boring cuz I have no friends to play with (I suck at making friends 🤣). Gosh, I miss playing Astrologian.
I sometimes think about looking at FF14 again, as it didn't really convince me years ago during my first and only month. Still unhappy completely new accounts can play a lot of it for free, while I would have to pay monthly just to see if it might convice me now... Either way, after seeing the skillbar within the first minute of this video, I already lost all interest for it, it's way too overwhelming.
im honestly waiting for mobile. i dropped the game just before heavensward dropped and try logging in every year or two but it just doesnt hit the same anymore. everything is so streamlined and bleh now
Raid Dungeons actually have quite complex mechanics that require to position yourself (sometimes even in relation to your party members) in specific positions. Strategy and efficient rotations are of course also required in higher level/ difficulty raids. But yeah its not an action rpg like elden rings if that is what you are looking for.
The game will be perfect when they fucking remove mothbly sub fee , or they make it opinions with limited access or feature to free players , not all ppl can afford 14€ months each month , we have priorities and responsibilities, imagine with your own many and decent job and can’t afford to your fav game to play , it’s so sad that company make it so hard for you to enjoy their game , trust me im a fucking engineer with decent salary , but adult ppl with family as me will think about each cent they spend , idm paying for expension every 3 or 6 months and I don’t mind buying it , but paying each month , nah I have other things to pay monthly like my bills , I think square Enix just greedy company , a fucking 24 years old game final fantasy 11 remains with sub fee like huh , also dragon quest 10 the game never seen light in the west with sub fee since 2010 , like come on , show your players some respect we are not a bank , that’s why I stopped playing the game when I reached Stromblood expension , I can’t anymore
Play Warframe! It's a totally different kind of game but man this game and development is awesome. I promise u if u don't want or can't u don't need to pay for anything. There is a in-game shop with cosmetics BUT even them u can get for free BCS u can trade a lot of in-game items for the currency.
