The problem when you want to start out is that you want instant gratification in so many cases. Pre orders just do not make it easier.

And after you've done a pre order, you realize that you NEVER want to do another one! Cough cough... BLI Reading T-1 EIGHTEEN months late.

Over here in England, I purchase mostly at model railway exhibitions. My biggest spend was just under a thousand Pounds!!

Train shows are definitely great places to find deals especially for older stuff that may have minor scratches and dents, but part of the problem here in the US is that these shows are often few and far between, so unless you're planning a full weekend getaway you may only have 1 or 2 shows a year you can feasibly go to. I'm not sure if this is the case only at the shows I go to, but I would say about 90% of the stuff at shows is just estate sales of people who are getting out of the hobby or have recently passed. In my area here in the Pacific Northwest, it seems that the model train manufacturers also do not venture out into this corner of the country so there's no way to see them in person either.

Drinking Level Ground Trading Columbia with Silk Vanilla Almond Creamer. New Locos are pricy but keep in mind other hobbies can be even more expensive. And even if you didn’t get that special Loco through pre-orders you’ll likely see it again in the used market in a few years.

Yes it is especially if you have paid. $300 for a N scale galloping goose. Yeah I know it is quite unusual.
Drinking Starbuck’s medium roast breakfast blend.
Still waiting on Intermountain to build a
N scale cab forward SP locomotive. Unusual but very neat model. That’s the reason I want it.

There has been a surge in interest in a Cab Forward. I bet somebody will make it.

Black rifle coffee with Splenda and milk.
Getting started there are limited options in starter sets. Expansion is where you start spending money. I have lucked out these past few times getting new/used locomotives from facebook marketplace. CSX cs44ace 911 w/sound and the other was the Atlas master lines GP38 NS #5642 Training first responders locomotive

I am drinking Dunkin Dark as usual. I have found that pre-orders are great. Right now I have three pre-orders at Scale Train that are spaced out two months each. This allows me to put so much money aside monthly aside as oppose paying for it right now.

I found out about the Broadway Limited (deal of the century? Is it too good to be true?) from youtubers, it started with a random low subscriber count channel that was simply recommended to me, but then I started to see more and more traintubers mentioning this finally you, I feel if I signed up for emails they would simply get lost in the pile of other emails that overflows my mail box and unless every email was about fantastic deal (which is probably more like 1 out of every 100) they too would just be ignored/deleted.

I'm not completely impressed with BLI. I'm going to stick with Kato. Got my big boy for 269.00 and it's great!

There is only one motor in the BLI big boy. There are 2 in the Kato one.

Hey jimmy, I have a question about ordering overseas. I live in the USA and want to order British steam locomotives in N scale. The websites I’ve seen are selling in £, can I order and pay in USD? An example is Dapol.

Drinking plain ol' store brand coffee when I saw you'd put out a new video. I haven't bought any model railroad stuff for a while because I had to tear down my small layout to make room for something else. Trying to figure out how to get something set up again.

I'm 56, been watching many channels and of course my fav, "DIY and Digital Railroad" for over a year now. Waiting , not able to start or able,...but can't quite go. Yesterday i finally jumped in the deep end. I picked up a Kato starter set, multi freight version, CSX engine and of course M1 track kit' It was barely used, complete in box on ebay for only $129. The CSX WASN'T really a desired choice, but i couldn't resist price as a starting kit,...AND its Kato track as well as DCC ready when i am. So happy i made the jump, now the flood gates open. Thanks Jimmy!

I wish companies made a certain locomotive or car more. A lot of certain ones are hot items and they don't keep them in stores long and its years before they do another run and you don't have a chance to buy them.

I feel that there are a few of the manufacturers who are just making enough plus a handful to full fill the pre orders so if they announce something that you want then it's best to place the order.

I am very new to the hobby. I have always (35 years) wanted to have a coffee table with a running train under the glass tabletop. Now Im actually going to do it! I bought the Thomas the tank engine set from Bachman on Amazon. But I do want more interest than a 24" oval. I downloaded SCARM but...I cant quite figure out how to get it all to connect properly. my available size in 30" x 36". Any ideas where I can download an plan for that size? Its the ez snap track.

JIMMY I NEED HELP. I really want to start an n gauge model railway but I'm torn in between a British layout or an American layout. I really want to run the huge duplex American monsters but they look good on long tracks and I don't have much space at all. Should i go British, because i like the smaller British locos more than the smaller American ones (no offence), but all the American diesels and steamers from the 1910s to 1960s are so cool. If i have the space ill go American for the PRR and UP stuff and the Baldwin diesels but I'm worried that those massive long locos and respective rolling stock may look out of place on a really small layout. I love your videos you got me into model railroading and now i want to start one more than ever. You're awesome.

So I’ve been building my first NScale set for about 2 years. Is it just me, but when I look at a N scale Gevo and GP40, the N scale’s seem to look longer and skinnier than their full size counterparts????

LOL Great video. I found as I started to plan my layout that each manufacturer of turnouts makes them slightly different sizes and angles. So if you want consistency, you need to buy the same sizes from the same manufacturer. And then I found that it is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to get more than 2 or 3 of any turnout in any size at one time from any store or supplier. LOL So ... plan to buy them over time! (it spreads the cost out as well)

Jimmy - I would highly recommend with pre-orders to save the money somewhere for them. I ran into a situation where I had several preorders set and they were scheduled to happen over several separate months. They all hit at the same month. If I didn’t save the money it would have been hard to pay for them all in the same two week period! Thanks for the video.

    • @DIYDigitalRailroad

This is exactly what I do. I have a special savings account just for preorder money and a budget spreadsheet for them.
