Both, although it's hard to measure the exact improvement in speed, but for example before this, without using keyboard shortcuts, ripple trim start comprised: Switch to the razor tool Click the video objects Select the remainder no longer required Hit delete -so four distinct actions, including one that moved my right hand from mouse to keyboard. Now it's just one press with the left hand. I would say that parts of my work flow have probably shortened by 10 or 20%. This saved time will probably be absorbed by doing more of something else like attention to colour, more shooting, or some such, so not really sure it's time saved as time better spent
Yeah, the other thing (I didn't mention) is that it's quite useful for figuring out one of those "What did I just do?" moments - when you're not sure if you just hit delete accidentally or some such
This absolutely oozes the concept of "work smarter not harder," and I love it immensely. I wonder if I should do something like this for my photo-editing app? 🤔
I got used to such an useless software, that I can't even do this, cause most of the features don't even have any shortcut, so yeah, I will just get fast with my mice.
I have found that using F-keys above F12 (F13+) in via/qmk is a nice way of utilising keys that will never conflict with what people normally have on the keyboard as well as keybinds that programs may ship with as a default.
May I suggest an improvement? It might be useful to add tactile marks like with F, J and Num5, and since this device has rather many rows for one hand, place 5 in the middle, upper middle, lower middle, left middle and right middle. Next level, maybe make these different shapes like a dot in the center and dashes on the sides. I don't know if such keys are available, but from my experience with the regular keyboard and numpad this might simplify blind pressing even more.
YES!! I was thinking this exactly. You could probably use a little hot glue and make a glue nob in the center key, that way you know where you are in space/time on the key pad...
neat idea. a drop of thin CA glue (like Bob Smith Thin) could be viscous enough to smooth itself out by spreading out but also mound up and being clear you'd still be able to see the legend. Or maybe even making a little concavity in the clear cover with a dremel would be enough to feel
Mate I just wanted to say I recently found your channel through some of your vegan tests/challenges but have explored your content and I love the variety and your candour and knowledge. Some really interesting content. Much love aus Deutschland :)
It should be noted that the people who created VIA apparently didn't intend on it being a tool with widespread support, which is why it's not really open source, the docs are bad and the UI is unclear. There are alternatives like VIAL though, but it's a little extra work to get it working on those.
Yeah. I mustn't grumble because ultimately, it's something I am using for free, but it's got the feel of one of those technical projects where people who know all about it think it's obvious and intuitive, and that nobody should need it explained to them
Excellent work! I'm doing a similar thing using a £20 gaming keyboard, but have the issue of black pre-printed keys to deal with. You've got around having to do that nicely!
A part 2 to this? Excellent! Oh Atomic Shrimp, you do so spoil us with your superb, eclectic and engaging content - thank you 😊 Maybe one day there will be a part 3 and we will have another classic trilogy on our hands? One can but dream...
I plan on making a similar device but I want to use a knob, rotate to the right = advance one frame and rotate to the left = rewind one frame and pushing the knob in will cut clip at play head. I’ll use a rotary switch (aka microwave knob)
@@AtomicShrimp I hadn’t heard of the shuttlexpress before, looks pretty good. I was literally going to take the control panel from an old microwave and wire it up the the guts of an old keyboard 😅 I still like the idea of making my own but if it didn’t work I might have to get myself a shuttlexpress. Thanks for the tip 👍
I think you'd need an arduino or something in there to read the shaft encoder on the rotary knob and turn it into the sort of input that your OS can properly interpret
@@AtomicShrimp oh man, you’re right. It’s gonna be more complicated than I thought. I haven’t ventured into the world of Arduino, maybe It’s time I took the leap.
Wow. I have in the past worked on a lot of word documents and sometimes it was such a lot of going back and forth between key board and mouse. Wandering if you land on the right key! Lots of frustration! I would have loved to have something like that. Nice to watch this video how to create stuff you need to make life a little bit more pleasant!
Brilliant keypad! Just a quick technical youtube question - If the "music in this video" panel appears in the description, does that mean a copyright claim has been made? I see it is youtube library - but then why does it not appear on *every* video that uses youtube library music?
UA-cam Audio Library music has a variety of different licenses - including CC Attribution (where anyone using it must credit the musician), and also music that is completely free to use without attribution - I tend to credit the musician even when using the free versions, just because someone will invariably ask what the music is. None of this has much to do with copyright claims.
You’re up early Shrimp! I’m normally barely conscious before 10 on a Saturday😅 really interesting video, might be tempted to look into the macro pad if I get into Unity
"Nothing is final", said one certain Tomato-speedrunner too :) Nice macro keyboard. Does the central key have a notch to position fingers better for "blind" navigation?
I use it as a stream deck, and I absolutely approve such a device for this exact purpose. Way less expensive than elgato, for more keys and complete flexibity.
2:19 - I actually reassigned ctrl-z and ctrl-x for undo and redo respectively in photoshop :P I don't know who's this alien from a forbidden planet decided to make ctrl-y a redo combination. Also yes, Photoshop is going with its own awful and unintuitive solution such as "undo/redo" and "step backward" with "step forward"... I just hate it.
I'm always a bit reluctant to tinker with stuff like that even when the software accommodates it, just because a full reinstall is much more of an undertaking if you have to take it away from vanilla config
Would you ever get a second of these keypads to use at the same time or would that make things too cluttered? Maybe there aren't enough shortcuts to actually warrant 50 total buttons.
Probably not - there is perhaps room on my desk for another, but a couple of the functions on here, I only use quite rarely - it would make more sense to just select the 25 most-used, or most-convenient things to have on this one, and modify it. Maybe if there was some completely different program that had its own shortcuts, that would be a case for something else, but then that's also a case for using layers on this one, or getting something more advanced like a streamdeck
I found that I could get a fingernail in one side and release the little clip notch in the middle of one edge and it came off. If that doesn't work for you, try a little strip of thin plastic cut from a bottle
@@AtomicShrimp thank you. I'll try that next time. what worked for me, before I saw your response, was using an extra keyswitch I had and, using the keycap puller that came with the macro pad, pulling up as close to one edge as possible.
I specifically bought the one with no RGB. I don't really like backlighting all that much personally, unless it has a productive function. (I imagine I could solder some LEDs onto this one - almost certainly the same PCB in there as the RGB model, just unpopulated)
This is why i hated davinci at the start. Ripple trim is mappen to ctrl/shift freggin {} in premiere its just Q or W. Use it ALL the time! But its à shame that davinci is such a clicky program out of the box. Love your videos brw!
Would it be possible to assign different shortcuts to these keys for different programs? Most animation software have the same main tools so it would make switching between them very seamless.
VIA and QMK both support 'layers' - so it can be made to do that, with one key assigned to switching of layers. Probably works best with a keyboard that has RGB backlighting so you could assign a different colour for each configuration layer
Yes, because sometimes ripple does weird things to clips on tracks other than the one containing the clip you want to ripple-cut, like truncating them. I haven't worked out why it does that, but in situations where there are a lot of stacked clips, sometimes the only option seems to be a non-ripple cut, followed by manual tidy-up.
