Back in my college days in music appreciation class a question was posed as to what song, if you had to pick just one, is the greatest song of all time. To many that may seem like an impossible ask, but I knew immediately what my answer was - Comfortably Numb. It has all the elements including not just one but two of the greatest guitar solos ever! Even producer Rick Beato agrees and he has an incredible ear. Gilmour literally makes that strat cry in those solos. A song that cuts me to the heart every freakin time I hear it. It is a masterpiece, and Thomas you made it your own. Well played sir, so well played ❤
Lol yes we call that "Your desert island record" or similar... What is your desert island setup? Which guitar, amp, pedal IF YOU COULD ONLY CHOOSE ONE! It is a good excercise and I pray to god I never have to choose there is just so many good things we can listen too.
@@vanillaslice3016 We have a show here in the UK (sorry if your are 🇬🇧) called *"Desert Island Discs"* that is predicated on just that! I think you get 10 records, & can choose 1 luxury & 1 book. I think they give you the complete works of Shakespeare & the Bible, the latter of which I could live without save for kindling! They've had some amazing guests on there like Tom Hanks, Bill Gates, I think even Obama! I'd be surprised if Gilmour hasn't been on it, the show has been going for donkeys years & they have all the old shows on the BBC website complete with a searchable inventory of who has been on it.
WOW... 75 people downvoting who are either dead or headed for the grave. This is incredible! GREAT version and wonderful playing. I'm throwing my guitar in the fireplace now... Mine never sounds this good.
As a lifelong Floyd fan, I do not say this lightly, very rare to see someone make a Floyd tune their own, brave and confident, it pays off! I have watched several TL Videos and look forward to many more, the videography, the music, the mood, I'm captured! and for that moment I thank you. ***** EXCELLENT
This is absolutely moving. Thomas man don't ever underestimate your ability and compare it to anyone else in the world.. Because you have impacted this ol Cali boy. Thank you and rock on dude!
Daren Lovejoy aw, thanks man! e-mail/PM me if you'd like to be on my CA mailing list, I live near Magic Mountain. Would be great to get to play this live for you.
thomasleeb Galaxy work - unique talent Thomas ! real pleasure ! ( please add me to on your CA mailing ..? ( I know George Lowden from some time / and the Moon Phase -spruce cut-Ton Wood form Switzerland -region---)
Me and my brother loved this track. the original of course... i have since fallen in love with this version, the way the string vibrate like that..... My brother since passed away. I haven't listened to this is 6 or more years.....This helps me remember the times we shared and the memories we made......He rests on a beach near me. Thanks.
charliesheenonblow The other man who impresses me by playing the lyrics is Jamie Dupuis...especially Pink Floyd. This is GREAT done on acoustic but other tributes - on harp guitar - (Welcome to the Machine) was recently posted by Jamie here, and in hearing it I feel you'd be amazed as well. Both men respect & honor the incomparable Sir Gilmour!
the actual videography makes me sea sick. the music heals me. you are a genius. a gift to our ears, hearts, and souls. beautiful music. you are blessed and gifted.
I listen to this at least once a week. It's one of the best covers of any song I've ever heard. The way you incorporate all the different techniques so seemlessly is nothing short of amazing.
Well that's one of the more interesting uses of a GoPro I have seen in a while... That was gorgeous playing and a beautiful arrangement of this classic piece. I would imagine that David Gilmour feels very honoured when he see's this kind of homage to his work. And only 5 bucks for the tab! Sold!
Gilmour was one of my sound-and-feel idols before I even played the guitar so it meant the world to hear that he's seen this and liked both sound and playing :-) And thanks, man, I'll definitely keep at it, too late to go back to med school now.
Beautifully interpreted and the video is absolutely wonderful. The sound is so full and clear and watching the changing perspective and the strings moving is hypnotic. "You are only coming through in waves." Thank you, Thomas. With gratitude, #1,258,358.
+F. Chris Stewart What he said. Excellent video, beautiful background scenes, but above all a great acoustic version of this song. A different mood for the song. White light though a prism, same light, but different colours. I like this colour, too.
This has to be by far the best acoustic cover of a song EVER, still learning this one and can't wait to have it cracked (Your tutorial is pretty indepth as well Mr Leeb, thank you)

this is the Best acoustic guitar cover ever, not only of this song, is the Best acoustic guitar cover of all times, youre awesome.
A man A guitar comfortably numb in the mountains ..i freakin love this whole concept and it still brings a tear every time ,i just want to be there thanks again thomas
bro I have bought guitars, given it up, sold them, wandered around for 5 years before buying another one and playing again all while still managing to listen and watch you craft this out of my favourite song at least once a month. Legitimate inspiration.
Man! That was fantastic! I kid myself that I can play a bit but that...... THAT was on another level! I have never seen a guitar played with such loose strings & who knew the percussion wave traveled up the neck like that? Amazing - if you are not already I declare you an honourable Englishman & British Rock God for the day!
Cheers, John! The string 'wobble' effect is caused by what's called the 'rolling shutter effect' and does not accurately show the vibration of the strings. There's a good violin-string-in-slow-motion here on YT.
Bob Lochen it's actually caused by the image sensor recording each frame in a progressive scan, as in it records line after line of pixels from the top down. That way the further down the frame you get, the more the movement of the strings have progressed. This awesome effect is also utilized in something called slit scan photography, which I highly recommend looking for on youtube/Vimeo.
Beim dritten mal ansehen bekomme ich schlechte Laune weil ich feststelle, daß ich das in diesem Leben nicht mehr lernen kann so genial zu spielen. Thomas das ist beeindruckend. Danke für dieses Video.
Was mir an diesem Video besonders gefällt ist: Die Landschaft erinnert mich irgentwie an Namibia... Danke.
Since I am fingerstyle player myself, I've listened to all that you mentioned. But that's the playing which I found most enjoyable. Here is why. 1) Thomas made this cover with a lot of IMAGINATION - he reinvented the song, didn't automatically transfer it to fingerstyle, which is mostly done by guitarist. 2) The Baritone Guitar makes the sound deep, soft, it's even "comfortably" beautiful. 3) His technique is, ofcourse, perfect - but he doesn't show off with that, it comes naturally and serves the needs of the song. 4) The same with the percussion - it's not "look how good I am, guys!", it's humble and applied only when it's needed. 5) As Thomas says in the description, that's a song that sparked deep love for music when he was a child - this is something that can be feeled when listening to his cover. 6) Five are enough.
It is great, but maybe a few thumbs down because there is a departure from the original enough that it is hard to even recognize as comfortably numb at times. I like it, but I was looking for accurate renditions when I found this. I'll probably get thumbed down for having an opinion, I always do.
philjava no I definitely see where you are coming from. I think maybe the guy was just saying this deals with the same scales and progressions. It is a nice song though, this guy can play some awesome tunes to chill to
philjava People have different tastes and that's a good thing! In my opinion, there's no improving the original so whenever I do covers, I try to put my own spin on them. Kelly Valeau arranged the same song a bit more straight-forward and it's wonderful, maybe you like it better: ua-cam.com/video/qSYfbYREqlA/v-deo.html
I've seen this for the first time when I was in the U.S. Then I've traveled more than 20 times to 20 countries! Today, I'm still at listening during the quarantine with much comfortably numb ..🎸🇸🇦
I have yet to learn all this in standard tuning... Most of it went reasonably smooth, but a single one of the bars took me a day and a half to figure out.....
I watched a video of a Spanish classic guitarist he would pull on the 5th and 6th strings so they would touch each other to create a desired tone. The amazing thing was that everytime he did the commentator said there was no fluctuation but produced an exact result each time.
Awesome cover of an amazing song! Love the camera shots, I'm a guitarist also and it's so cool just to watch how the strings actually react when playing, love the camera in the sound hole too! Great idea! Instant sub here, can't believe I have not seen this sooner! Cheers from New Zealand
Fucking beautiful, the wall also had a strang affect on me I use to listen to it in the dark with head phones & I swear I was lost in my head for what felt like eternity
Used to watch this all the time as a kid, now 10 years later I still definitely can't play this, but I can play my "own" version of Comfortably Numb hahaha; so I guess I didn't waste all my time. Still one of the greatest covers of any song I've heard, putting an entire song all on one acoustic has always been so impressive to me, and you do the vocals! Thanks for sharing, even after all these years, it always makes me feel something else, and it fills me with inspiration to go play.
Thomas!! You are now one of my favorite fingerstyle players, and I think u deserve to be on the top in fingerstyle and percussive, perfwct style and song choosing, I wish u the best in ur career 👍👍🎼🎶🎵🎵

Great job Thomas! The music is great, I love how the strings vibrate and float around! And of course, the hills of Val Verde are so beautiful. Thank you for sharing. Greg
Actually, it's oscillation of the strings. Each note has it's own wave form (oscillation). When you video tape a certain frame rates, the video captures that notes wave form.. :-)
I keep coming back to this for the past 6 years! Awesome arrangement!!!

Wow. 7 years and still the best cover made man.
I never thought comfortably numb's solo on acoustic guitar could be this beautiful. great job!

Now 8.

So great music and image - especially strings waving :)
+Anvar Azizov I know; I sat there transfixed.
That was BEAUTIFUL Thomas.
Man you just made me appreciate acoustic guitar so much more! Great work!
It still makes me cry. You sang it without a human's voice. Those strings speak very loud my friend. You are one of a kind, irreplaceable.
:-) thank you!

the camera angles sold me. the great cover is icing on the cake
I saw this video clip 4 years ago. And now, I haven't seen any better guitar videos than this video clip.
Pure art. Everybody who likes acoustic guitars this is a must!

ha - that's exactly where vocals would say "down"
Incredible performance, excellent video! Really this is perfect !!!
Da pelle d'oca! Veramente uno spettacolo!!!! Complimenti
Let's keep it short: That's the most beautiful thing I've ever heard on guitar.
Raiko Baichev try Ocean -John Butler

always been 110% fan my fellow guitar player. Most beautiful performance ever 👍

this effect is calling "rolling Shutter". The cam does not read out the complete sensor in one moment. But looks mystic - like it!
Thomas, love your music and your scenery!!!!
The best cover/rendition of any Pink Floyd song Ive ever heard.
Awesome job man, keep it up. Absolutely AWESOME
10/10

That lick at @4:08 is so damn smooth. Love it.
glad you spotted that, I mess it up just about every other time :-)
Agreed. Whenever I listen to this piece I have to replay that about 3-4 times.
Curtis Worzalla Sometimes I just listen to it all day. I still can't play the song tho.
Thomas!! You are now one of my favorite fingerstyle players, and I think u deserve to be on the top in fingerstyle and percussive, perfwct style and song choosing, I wish u the best in ur career 👍👍🎼🎶🎵🎵

+DonnyOsmosis he's given it the thumbs up already :-)
+thomasleeb WOW. Wow, wow, wow. That's heavy. Congrats!
Just incredible, as it was the first time I heard it.
Those harmonics at 2:30 are awsome :)
Beautiful. Just plain beautiful. 400,000 views aren't giving this video any justice!
This is absolutely incredible
Absolutely lovely, therapeutic rendition of this classic tune. I like sitting by the sea contemplating life while listening to this.
the strings are trippy to watch
Sid S Yeah they are! I wonder what tuning he was playing in?
The tuning to this is DADGAD
Chad Marks cant seem to figure this out in dadgad you sure ?
DADGAD, but on a baritone, starting on Bb.
Amazing movement of the string... After watching this, I know I love guitar more and more
Go Pro Hero 3 makes the video alive. Great acoustic cover indeed!
Simply amazing, Mr. Leeb. Thank you.
Someone needs to find the secret society of people who thumbs down really good UA-cam videos and stop the madness
THIS IS SO GOOD I like how you filmed it outdoors makes it a million times as better.
It's mesmerizing to see those strings waving like that!
Why do they wave so much?
Ariel Carella the strings vibrate at a frequency that the camera isnt able to keep up with so it makes this effect
You are so right! Donno how I didn't thought on that. Thx!
It's also a classic nylon strings!! ;)
Gwen Molfetas those are steel strings.
Yes! Lee I see that now!! My son plays this on his classical its altogether different tone!! I can hear its steel now!! Thanks! :)
Those points of view on guitar's strings waves are awesome.
Why from the inside camera I can't see the soundhole pickup?
Because sometimes internet videos are not 100% true to life.
Finally, someone who also noticed. Now I can confirm that it isnt live
Just to make you write a comment...
Microphone from inside?
Or shot one shot as he recorded Audio then replayed another shot without soundhole pickup for you to see the view
Simply awesome! Wow, love the playing, sound, visual, local... everything. Perfect. Well done.
I hope David Gilmour has seen this and knows the playing he has inspired!
he DID and from what I've heard he said sound and playing were lovely. Still grinning about this today.
@@thomasleeb that is the coolest thing ever! Well deserved recognition from the man him self!! Awesome Bro!
This should be recorded for the sake of everyone to enjoy. It's a masterpiece and this version still retains that raw emotion. Much love from the Carolina's :)

This work is breathtaking. It makes me remember all the good things of Michael Hedges work. Thanks skipping my heart a few beats.

Great angles on the strings. Looks fantastic from the different POVs.
the most original version since the original
Wow!! Love how you capture the Beauty of your playing!!

Your Playing is just Beautiful... Please make another soon!! :)
1,621,193 and a thumbs up by Gilmour himself. Nice. Now it's time to work on your electric skills ...so please feel free to gift me that Lowden Baritone. Carry on.
Thanks very much! My electric skills are non-existent, so that's going to take a while.
Could you point us toward the thumbs up, please? thanks
great piece, Thomas!
thomasleeb It's been a year, & we hope you are delving into the ways of the electric guitar...this shows great promise!
Amazing cover. Thank you Thomas for this great interpretation
Not all camera angles are recommended if you're playing trumpet.
It would probably not be the most stunning footage ever but I'd love to have a fish-eye view of what happens inside a trumpet player's mouth.
thomasleeb
Few fish will have that same desire.
The first time I heard the guitar was a recording of Zor
60 yrs. later it's Thomas Leeb. The guitar has come a long way
4:09…bang! pins & needles!
I have no electric guitar background so just that bar took me a day and a half....
Great job Thomas! The music is great, I love how the strings vibrate and float around! And of course, the hills of Val Verde are so beautiful.
Thank you for sharing.
Greg
why yr guitar string are dansing ? (i realy want to know)
Large gauge strings with a low tuning :)
robinhood9991 thank you :)
Actually, it's oscillation of the strings. Each note has it's own wave form (oscillation). When you video tape a certain frame rates, the video captures that notes wave form.. :-)
Shane Knigge ohh thank you :)
amira clever It's due to the rolling shutter effect. Vsauce explain it quite well here: /watch?v=mQ0hS7l9ckY
I see your weed stash in there you silly hahahaha
