Be sure to check out my second channel, WhatchaDoinBob, it’s a VLOG about what I’m doing at any given time. / whatchadoinbob
African blackwood would make a great cap, well done.
I just received a piece and believe thats the way I’ll go.
That looks great. A cocobola cap would look awesome.
Thank you.
Regards,
Bob
I appreciate the format - covering all the steps clearly and in detail with no wasted time.
Thank you John. These pens are hard to turn and tell about in a short video.
Regards,
Bob
Hey Bob, Even though I knew it was coming I was still heartbroken for you when I saw the pieces!
It really stunk.
Regards,
Bob
A lovely pen Bob, what a shame about the cap breaking, I like the way you kept calm and carried on. 👍👍😍😍
Thank you Eric,
I’ll make a replacement soon.
Regards,
Bob
Man, what a heartbreaker!! Great video as always. Ebony maybe?? Thanks for sharing
Thank you David.
Regards,
Bob
Great job again Bob,nice pen great video as well!
Thank you Kwstas.
Regards,
Bob
I'm in agreement with Andy Smylie--I think ebony would work well for that Spalted Hackberry! Good work Bob!!
Thank you Don,
I’m getting a bunch of votes for Ebony.
Regards,
Bob
smart voters---LOL
LOL
Love the work and effort you put into this, Bob. Again, the troubleshooting commentary along the way is very helpful to us beginning pen turners. As far as cap ideas, I'd go with something that's close to the spalted color.
Thank you Mike.
Regards,
Bob
I love the video and the info on making a pen like this. I am working on making closed end pens at this time. When I get all the tools together then I will work on making pens such as this one. I am dark wood such Peruvian walnut would go nice with pen or something not quite as dark. Snake wood wood look good. Keep coming with videos.
Thank you Reginald.
Regards,
Bob
Thanks for sharing this wonderful video. The pen turned out fantastic. If you have spalted tamarind that would be nice for the cap but if you want a contrasting wood then purpleheart or bloodwood would look really nice. Thanks again and keep up your awesome work.
Thank you for the suggestion, I appreciate it.
Regards,
Bob
Really enjoyed the video bob I gave that nice cigar pen I made to a vet that was at Home Depot as much as I loved the pen I loved the reaction I got from the gentlemen even more. Maybe try coco bolo with light and dark grain hope I’m saying the right kind of wood.
I love that you presented a pen to a random vet. Thank you for doing that.
Regards,
Bob
Great job Bob...nice looking pen...great video as well. I found it to be a little more in depth for me as I am still just a beginner turner, however I will be saving it for the future because of the details you provided in the process of making the pen. Maybe someday I will attempt something like this once I become a little bit more experienced....cheers brother..../Joe
Thank you Joe,
I’m really enjoying the challenges this type of pen making creates. It’s intriguing.
Regards,
Bob
Ebony would make a good contrasting cap
Thank you Andy.
Regards,
Bob
Hi Bob Love your work love the pen we all have are miss apps great video. Y.N.W.A. Paul
Thank you Paul.

Thank you Rod,

Bob, try making inserts from brass bar it turns drills and taps great on a wood lathe, also aluminum, keep up the good work love watching videos from here in the UK.
Good idea Alfred. Thank you.
Regards,
Bob
A Customer, who got supplied with Sonora Desert Ironwood by me here in Germany for a very fair price, made me a Fountain Pen made from the most black Gabon Ebony and Mamoth Ivory as a little "Thank you"........and I realy love it ! They Handle section is made from black Alloy and a BiColor Gold Tip ! The Prn doesn't have a Clip or other Metal stuff on the outside. Only Black/White Ebony/Ivory on the Grip & Cap Section !
Pure Class ........I love it..........and their are not many, or should I say nore examples made of this combo on the web !
Maybe you should try it as well ? Top of the Cap and Bottom are for 1/2 inch Ivory.. . The rest is just black Ebony
That sounds like a beautiful pen Matthias. Thank you for explaining it to me.
Regards,
Bob
I think a collar or even a bit of strong tape arround the cap BEFORE you tap the threads would save you quite some trouble.
Thank you.
Regards,
Bob
I really like your ideas on putting together a great pen. Been buying some of the same tools so I can give it a go. Have a few ideas I want to try too. Zebra wood looks cool when you cross cut it. High oil woods work much better for making treads. Cocobolo wood would work. If you have ever tried dessert ironwood, super dense and heavy. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you Clyde.
Regards,
Bob
A thought about the layout. If you did body, cap, and then section you could get a good body/cap grain match and I would think with some final trimming at the join get the clocking adjusted. How's that for a challenge?
I’ve been learning how to dial in the grain match. I wanted to show that on this pen but I broke that cap.
Regards,
Bob
멋지네요
Thank you. 😎
Regards,
Bob
Dang, Bob. Too bad about the cap. Fantastic results otherwise. Hey. You are getting so good that PSI will probably never get another order from you, huh? :>). Now a challenge. When you have figured wood, calculate the threads so when the pen is capped, the grain lines up. Same with the section. Just thought about that as I was drooling over the lovely piece of hackberry.
Thanks Steve,
I was reading up on how to do the alignment and planned to test it on this pen and cap. It’ll have to be the next one now.
Regards,
Bob
Don't forget the spring to take up any movement, and keep pressure on the refill.
Thank you Alfred.
Regards,
Bob
I know this is an old video but I don't see any comments on my observation. That blank was stabilized. If it was properly stabilized, no doubt that it was, you should not have needed to do the alumalite sections. Also, when the wood is stabilized, the resin impregnates the wood fiber so there is nowhere for any intrusion to go. None of the CA or oil should have anything to soak into. Stabilized wood is basically fiberglass that looks like wood. The fibers and resin form a solid body.
I don’t remember exactly what the reason was but the threads just didn’t take. Threading wood is always a challenge even if it is stabilized, I occasionally still have issues. Probably just my inexperience.
Regards
Bob
@@RJBWoodTurner Thanks for the reply Bob. Considering everything you go thru in your videos, I should have known that there was reason for the steps you took.
Oh, Bob...This one is indeed heartbreaking. I admire how you grasp the positive out of any situation, I fear I am more of a curser myself...You have a system almost figured out here, this is huge! It is the RJB method of turning bespoke pens! I think you are into uncharted territory here. The potential is great. I think these eggshell thin walls are a downside, think about how long it would take a customer to crush one of these. I don't know what the answer is though.
I wrestle with the wall thickness every time I make one of these pens. I still have a ton to learn.
Regards,
Bob
I don’t know if you have ever had a request like this, but how about putting a shaving brush kit together.
My only issue is after purchasing the mandrel, bushings, and bit that I may never make another. I have seen the kits time and time again in the catalog, I just haven’t been able to get into them.
Regards,
Bob
They make a tap called a bottoming tap that is designed to tap blind holes. When you were putting the C/A on I said I hope he doesn’t glue it to the collet.
LOL, that was a rookie mistake. One that I won’t make again.
Regards,
Bob
Just thinking outside the box a nice piece of zebra wood might work nicely. Also a lot of bespoke pens that I have seen a just a little thicker than what it looks like you are working with, and just a couple thou thicker should give the caps enough stability to keep from being easily or accidentally crushed.
Thank you Dirk.
Regards,
Bob
Hallo Bob, sehr schöne Arbeit! Hast du schon einmal mit Bernstein Gearbeitet?
Danke, ich habe nicht mit Bernstein gearbeitet, würde es aber gerne probieren.
Grüße,
Bob
Hi Bob. When ever I use superglue to glue to pieces together I always put a dab of thin CA and then the medium CA. Now this is just my opinion and I might be wrong , but I think the thin CA will penetrate deeper into the fibers and the medium CA will bond to the thin CA and thus you get a stronger bond. Again just my opinion. Great looking pen. Thanks for the video
That’s an interesting idea Tommie, I’m gonna try that.
Regards,
Bob
Have you built a cap yet? It's only been 4 years...haha it would look great with a black acrylic cap...just a idea.
Hello William,
I made a cap from African Blackwood. Here are three links to photos of it from my Instagram.

if you haven't done cap yet maple with walnut lines in it might look nice
Cool idea. Regards,,
Bob
Hey Bob instead of wood what about making the top with some clear alumilite I think that would look good!!
That idea has merit, I like it.
Regards,
Bob
Bob, you did a great job on the pen but you’re not done check your mail in a couple of days. (?)
Thank you Eddie.
Regards,
Bob
Bob, a piece of wenge would be a nice contrast for the cap
Thank you Neal.
Regards,
Bob
That indeed is a great looking pen Bob, just one observation, when you make the cap postable do you think this will mar the finish on the body with constant use or indeed the threads inside the cap? As always Bob, great video. Thank you.
Chris
Hello Chris,
I hope it won’t but I do not know.
Regards,
Bob
Sad ending to an otherwise great pen video. I noticed some of the dark resin material from the threaded tenon shows through where it inserts into the pen barrel. (27:38) Maybe you could use a similar color for the tenon so it wouldn't show through. - Your videos are very helpful and your pens look great. Thanks.
Hello Terry,
I agree about the insert color. I just didn’t have another color available In the shop. I’m low on Alumilite blanks. I need to buy several different colors for occasions like this.
Regards,
Bob
Take a lesson from the Major Pen Manufacturers... Go with a Black Acrylic or alumilte .. Yet if you want to keep the wood, Black and White Ebony. it isn't as brittle as Gaboon or Macaser
Thank you Andrew.
Regards,
Bob
So around 8:45 you talk about recording dimensions you have found. But aren't there too many variables to use these measurements as bottom line? Even trying to keep everything exact as you reproduce these pieces, won't the size of the insert as well as the nib vary enough that your depth for the ink cartridge might be off as much as 1/8 to 1/4 inch. I would think that in custom making these pens you would have to measure each individual pen as you make it as you did here to ensure a perfect fit.
You’re correct the dimensions may change just a tad. However, I can get super close and then sneak up on it. Its also nice not having to start from scratch every time.
Regards,
Bob
Did you use ca glue on the threads.
I did and it really helped.
How about Black Walnut or Cocobola for a cap, sorry about the mishap Bob but it is a learning process
Thank you Harry,
It certainly is, that’s why I didn’t get mad about it.
Regards,
Bob
Alumilite cap? That’d be cool.
Thank you for the suggestion.
Regards,
Bob
Hi I have a perfect piece of Spalted wood you could use to finish the pen with but I don't know your address to send it to you?
Thank you Paul,
I truly appreciate the offer however, another person already beat you to it. I have a blank, I just need to turn it. Thank you again for the offer.
Regards,
Bob
How about zebra wood or maple ambrosia for the cap
Nice ideas Michael, thank you.
I hate it when that happens
Me too, it’s a real bummer.
Regards,
Bob
Sorry about your pen my friend
Thank you Nigel, Live and learn, I won’t make that mistake again.
Regards,
Bob
Ebony
Thank you Rusty.
