I hope you all receive the things I share in the neighborly spirit in which I'm sharing them. I do not view myself as an expert on any topic, nor do I feel that others should think or do things exactly as we do. We are each on our own journey doing as we feel God wants us to do and that might look very different from one family to the next. If you disagree with our methods, I trust that you will do what you think is right for your family without feeling the need to speak unkindly to us about our choices. Following are the times at which I answer each question as well as links for things I discuss in this video.

Me too Joan, I'm just heart broken and still feel shell shocked. It's so comforting to still be able to see Andrea at her best, sharing her wisdom with such a big, loving heart. The World was a better place for her presence in it. Through these videos her testimony and much needed positive influence will continue indefinitely, that's such a legacy.

I always learn so much! A dear friend took her life in Feb of this year as her life had apparently become unbearable to her. She had bipolar. Never having lived with a mental illness I have zero clue what it's like. Over time i tried to be helpful to my friend. It cane to seem, to me, that she prefereed to wallow (using Andrea's word) in her irrational thoughts. For years I could share what the Bible says when her thoughts diverged from it, or point out facts in her life when the thoughts were in the face of reality, and it helped. Her husband told me she was so positive after time with me. In the last year or so she became quiet and it was hard to have a conversation with her. They had moved out of state 11 years ago and we had talked almost daily until she got quiet. I assumed she was busy and distracted as they were running a business. As usual Andrea's thoughtful answer regarding mental illness was sweet and loving and helpful. 🙂

I’ve been watching you all since I was about 20, and I’ve never interacted, just enjoyed the content. I’ve made a lot of mental notes over the years of how I want to parent and the person I want to be, all stemming from Andrea. I’m 25 now and feeling a little lost in life, but listening to Andrea talk about priorities and not letting others’ priorities affect your own is really impactful. Just want everyone in the family to know that she is still making a difference with her thoughts and ideas, many years later ❤

I’ve been rewatching all of Andrea’s videos because I’m not ready to say goodbye yet. I always have had a special place in my heart for Andrea and her channel and always said she was one of my favorite youtubers if not my favorite UA-camr. I would love to say I thought of her as a friend. Today in this video I know God was speaking to me through this. The whole beginning part of this video- even though I have watched this video before just spoke to me in so many ways with so many things I am going through right now and the part where you talk about what you would’ve wanted 15 years ago is basically where I am now and God knew I needed this right now. Andrea has taught me so much before and even now that you are gone you are still teaching me and God is still using you and I know you will continue to teach. I am so glad God had you have make all these videos and even though I am heartbroken for your family and heartbroken myself that your not here, I rejoice knowing you are in heaven. I am so glad that you were here when you were and you gave us your wisdom and your friendship. Thank you Jesus for Andrea’s life and thank you Lord for all she has done and will continue to do. ❤️

Just an observation, I grew up sharing a bedroom with 4 sisters, my brothers were 3 to a bedroom. We had a small living room and a large kitchen. Oh and 1 bath with a claw foot tub. No shower. We grew up happy and to this day return to that house for family get togethers! Living close can make happy healthy families! Perhaps living in large homes and never having to deal with getting along is part of our societal problems today....

On the topic of mental health, I thought of something I'd like to add. In 1 Kings 19, the prophet Elijah had just escaped from having a "showdown" with the prophets of Baal. He was under so much distress that he prayed that God would kill him. God didn't chastise him for a lack of faith. (Clearly Elijah had plenty of faith; he'd just called down fire from Heaven!) Instead, God sent an angel to bring Elijah bread and water. The angel told Elijah the journey had been too much for him and that he had to get up and nourish himself. Once Elijah ate and drank, his strength returned and he was able to keep going.

Thank you for mentioning that. I actually think a lot about that story when I'm having bad times and it does have a really powerful message. I hope others will be able to take encouragement from it as well.
Thank you also for your very thoughtful comments on mental illness in general. I agree with much of what you said and disagree on a couple of small points, but most of all I sincerely appreciate the time and thought you put into sharing your opinions on the subject. As I so often say, I'd dearly love the opportunity to have an actual conversation with you about this (but of course this isn't the place for it). I love the way you think about things and listening to you always inspires and encourages me. Thank you so much for everything. You are the coolest. :-)

Andrea Mills thank you. These words give me great comfort in my personal situation. My fear is leaving my children behind,(because of my terminal cancer).Hearing that you were able to carry on after your mother’s passing , and still have happiness in your life. Allows me to believe that when it is my time to leave them, they’ll find solace from angels that walk among us. Your suggestion of walking through the scenario at its worst, is something I’m going sit down and speak with my two children about. Although they tend to want to avoid the topic of death, and the fact that I’m dying. I think that if I make it a habit of continually bringing up the topic. Even though they’re scared or uncomfortable , perhaps it’ll make the real event just a bit easier! I’ve been struggling with what the best way to deal with this is. Your words have really helped thank you.
      Your friend,
      Jennifer

how is this story about mental health?

    • @theoriginaledi
      @theoriginaledi 7 років тому +5

I can see how that would be unclear given only the brief recounting here. There's a fair bit of evidence in the Bible that Elijah often dealt with emotional distress and sadness, partly just because it was his nature and partly because he had a lot of enemies trying to harm him. On this occasion, he was distressed because (1) he had been through a string of other difficult situations leading up to this, (2) the spiritual battle against the pagan prophets took a lot out of Elijah, and (3) the queen (who hated him vehemently) had just sent a message saying that she was determined to kill him within 24 hours.
So Elijah gave up. He literally said to God (basically), "That's it. I'm done. I'm begging you, just kill me now." But God knew that Elijah still had a lot of strength left in him. He was just exhausted and worn down and needed to be, as Andrea so aptly put it, replenished. So God made him eat and drink and rest, and then he powerfully reminded Elijah that his strength ultimately came from him, and after that Elijah was able to carry on and do what needed to be done.
God knew that, before Elijah could even listen effectively, he needed rest and nourishment to allow his body to keep up with what his spirit needed to accomplish. The same is true for all of us. God created our bodies to be efficient containers for our spirits while we're here on earth, but he designed them to be fueled by good food and good rest, and it's up to us to make those things happen. It's a huge part of staying physically AND emotionally healthy.

I've finally finished watching this Q & A... took me 3 sessions. ha ha. I can't even express how much wisdom I receive through Andrea. We are not homeschooling anymore, but when we did, I would find people's assumptions and thoughts against it so so frustrating. Although i decided to homeschool solely because I felt lead by the Lord to do so, Andrea's explanation really does resinate with me so strongly.. the whole family dynamic... educate my children etc etc. So much else within this vlog is going to be helpful to others for who knows how many years to come... Such a legacy she has left... it's truly amazing.

It is so enjoyable watching You, Tom and your sweet children. I raised 5 children myself as I lost my husband to Cancer at a young age. I have to say that I love how you are able to give individual attention to your children. I know how hard it is when you have many children close together as I also did. I wish I had your videos to watch and learn from when I was younger. Have a wonderful Christmas and I look forward to watching the video how Tom wraps your gift!

I have been watching these old videos all day. I hate that I didn't find her channel before she died. But I'm so thankful for these videos. The more I watch her, the more wisdom I gain. She was just such a beautiful woman. I keep tearing up listening to her, but she just speaks so beautifully and just makes you feel so much better. Her legacy lives on, and I'm still praying hard for Tom and her children. I know they are such a beautiful family and I pray God gives them the strength to get through. Lots of hugs to you guys, Tom. I wish we lived closer. My kids have wanted to reach out this past week so many times. My little ones wanted me to tell you, they are so sorry and they pray for you all every night! 💕💕🙏 - Raylynn

I am sure we disagree on a great many topics (I’m agnostic and a licensed public school teacher for starters lol), but I’ve never understood the harping on of people who hold different views (or are just judgmental). Take what serves you and leave the rest, it’s not hard! Your organization and recipe videos are right up my alley (we’re loving the revolving menu!) I am sorry you have faced unkindness from a small group. Know that you are supported and appreciated by many, even those who do not live/believe the same as you do.

48:32 Tom, Andrea mentioned in the video about adding onto the house. Have you considered walling in the front porch? There is already a roof and it wouldn't cost too much to add walls and it would add extend the living room. I'm sure you could get volunteers to help you with the construction.

I wear knee length skirts year around in Alberta, Canada and people look at me funny but I find that I am warmer with my skirt and nylons than I am when I wear jeans. I prefer to wear skirts and for the 30 seconds a day that I am outside it really doesn't hurt me. I keep blankets and such in my car in case I am in an accident but that should be standard no matter what a person wears.

I think I've said something to this effect before but as someone who deals with chronic illness I love your family and your content. It makes me feel a bit like I have a more manageable life because I can go on trips with you and your kids places or just hang out on a normal school day and laugh at the antics. I'm not a religious person, and I'm not at all into gardens or anything but I literally watch every video regardless of subject matter because you, Tom, and your gorgeous children inject so much light and life into what can be a lot to deal with sometimes and you guys feel like very good friends of mine at this point (I think roughly a year and a half on for me watching?) . Thank you for this channel Andrea, and if you'd pass that on to Tom, and Judah for their channels too I'd appreciate it.

The first time I remember you commenting was way back on our fall clothes haul video last year; you laughed about what it must've been like for Solomon having his brothers share opinions on what underwear he should keep. I was so surprised to have you comment as you - being a single, childless man - were so far from the type of person I thought would be watching our videos. I truly appreciate all that you add to our little corner of UA-cam; we always refer to you as the guy with the sideways face . :) Tom also sends his thanks for your friendship.

Andrea Mills I think it is partially that I grew up in a bigish family, and much like Asher like kids a lot but I was always the youngest in my family that spent much time around me til I got a lot older and started having nieces and nephews to see, and I've always been rather domestic so your organization videos and things are fun for me. Either way you and your family are something I'm intensely grateful for. :)

Thank you for doing this channel, your videos are so friendly and I feel that we are friends, so I guess I should be more friendly too and comment more often! These Q&A videos are the best because I always learn so much from your wisdom! I could go on and on about this one, but I don't have that much time right now.... I do want to say that we are one of the school at home families you mentioned, and our experience has been nothing like what you described (thankfully). We live in Wisconsin and use the Virtual Ed program offered by our local public school. The school provides a laptop and buys our curriculum, but I get to pick it out and set our schedule and teach it. We do have a teacher who keeps in touch with us, but it's very minimal. The kids also get to attend classes as we choose... my older one goes to band now and the other may choose to go next year. This is something I could not provide for her, so I've always felt that it was the BEST of both worlds. I'm sure other families have had different experiences, but I wanted you (and others) to know that our experience was much better than what you'd described here. Those who are thinking about schooling at home through their school district should talk to families in their area to see what it's like where they are. If they don't know anyone, ask the local librarians for a contact recommendation. One more thing, about Halloween I like to say, it's the most neighborly thing that happens all year... at no other time are you expected or invited to go to people's houses, knock on their door and be given candy. Big blessings to all the Mills!

I have never really thought of homeschool the way that you have explained it, but you have really gave me some interesting points that I have even thought of! I went to private school all of my life, and I often times would call my teacher, mom just on accident! I think that is because you spend more time at school with your teacher than at home with your mom and family. But thank you for all of your amazing insight, you are amazing!

Hi Andrea, Thank you, thank you, thank you ! You are such a blessing to me. I enjoyed every minute of this Q & A especially the discussion on mental illness. I suffer from anxiety and depression and I am learning how important it is to change your attitude(or thought processes) to open new pathways to positive thought. It's funny because every time you say "I don't know if any of this is making any sense", because it's at those times, in my opinion you are making perfect sense. I like too how you acknowledge the boys puberty caused angst and you explain to them that they need to rest and that those feelings won't last forever. My Aunt Esther you to have a saying that I quote to myself quite often. It's 'this too shall pass".
So thanks again dear Andrea for all these friendship talks, I really enjoy them.
P.S. I wish I would have known about the progesterone creme 30 years ago, maybe we'd have gotten pregnant and had children. Which we wanted so desperately. So please continue to spread the message. Maybe it will save other women the heartbreak of not having children.May God bless you all.
