The Protein is amazing, but it’s really all about the blue channel for me, rather than the green channel. Unless you really need the Noeble ODR tone in that green channel, you are probably better off going with the Browne Carbon, which is just the blue channel circuit for almost half the price, or a Wampler Pantheon. If all you use is the blue channel, $340 is a pretty expensive blues breaker pedal, and the Carbon and Pantheon both sound nearly identical to the Protein blue channel for a lot less. But if you love the ODR tone as well, or the stacked tone, then the Protein is a fantastic pedal.
I"m a Bluesbreaker pedal fanboy, the Nux Morning Star for $54 is amazing. Knock off of JHS Morning Glory which is a knock off of the Marshall Bluesbreaker Pedal. I have an original Marshall BB, Ceritone Horse Breaker (also awesome), and JHS MG to compare against. The Marshall lives in its box because of the price, the Ceritone is on one of my setups and the Nux is on another, the JHS is just boxed up with the rest somewhere (Sugar Drive is my favorite inexpensive Klone and the Wampler Bella is about 95% of my Nordland ODR-C, just less tweakable for 1/3 the price or less). So Nux + Nobels ODR-1 Mini and you've got this for 54+72. Pop in a Sugar drive and you've got one heck of a great OD setup for not much money (MF/GC has the pink full sized version for $89 right now I believe, called Fat Sugar I think).
You could probably get a Wampler Pantheon Deluxe and Paisley Deluxe (ODR-S clone + Paisley Drive) used for about the price of this pedal new. That said, the Protein sounds really good.
I'VE OWNED AND PLAYED HUNDREDS OF PEDALS.MANY,MANY DUAL DRIVES.THE PROTEIN DRIVE IS THE APEX PREDITOR.THE BEST SOUNDING DUAL THAT PLAYS VERY WELL WITH OTHERS. REALLY THE ONE PEDAL I COULDN'T DO WITHOUT.....LOVE TO BROWNE AMPLIFICATION. T4 FUZZ KILLS ASWELL.
Just got a used one in version 2.1 yesterday, it's truly incredible and very versatile. Just like what you said "can not get any bad sound from this pedal". Great with either single channel Great with both together... wow... sweet spots are all around to get something great differently. What a pedal. amazing. good job Browne Amplification. Thanks for the great review on this pedal that help me much to go for it.
Great demo! I had a low serial number protein and sold it like a fool. All I’ve done is thought about it, and your demo doesn’t help with the regret at all 😢keep em up!!!
Great demo and playing! Would really like to see the details of your pedalboard, especially as it relates to the Protein and the Dane. Keep up the great work!
I have an Origin Effects Revival Drive. But this pedal is intriguing. I guess I could have both on my board. The Cutlass HSS is the most versatile guitar in my collection.
H1! great vid ... one suggestion ... if you could only buy one ... wich one would you choose ... The Dane or the Protein ... they are OD but, i beliveve different .. but if you hadnt any OD on your pedalboard ... wich one would you buy first ??? Really nice production quality videos man! I dabble in trying to make videos and know how much work it is, I would love to hear about your workflow for making videos! Maybe a video idea?
i just got my analogman king of tone, its ok, just like this pedal is ok, the real magic is the amp not the pedal, the pedal adds to a great amp, not the other way around
I'm running the tone on the right side at about 2 oclock with single coils, I like it contrast with the left side. I think the difference between the versions is that with the newest one you can run both sides separately into a switching system with one of those fancy TRS splitter cables
Great tones! 3 questions. Have you tried it with TRS cables running each side into a separate loop? Have you tried various voltages to power it? If so, could you demo that?
Very different pedals and in my opinion both the best in their category. If you want "amp-in-a-box" then go for gladio, if you want a more traditional overdrive then go protein.
@@JacksonBrooksby Thank you so much! I've been asking around, but never got an answer from anyone until now. I'm on the waitlist for the Gladio, so I'll try it first. Was also really happy to learn the Protein is made in my hometown 😁
The pedal Sounds awesome, you need to try the King Tone Duellist (left-sided a bluesbreaker, Right side a VintageTS808). Its my favourite overdrive of all time. Works amazing with all guitars and both sides sack perfectly without getting mushy. It stays wide open and detailed! Oh so you like this a lot better than the Galdio?! I've got the Gladio V2 on order, should be getting it on the 26th November.
The Duellist has become a classic, just like the protein I guess! Watch TPS's recent live stream where they shootout those three with the KoT. The Gladio is pretty amazing but the protein is probably more my sort of thing. Very different styles of drive
@@JacksonBrooksby thanks for the reply, I did watch that recent life stream. Could you go into a little more detail about how you feel about the protein vs the Gladio as in your glado review you seemed to love it! Even better could you do a video shoot out of the protein and gladio?!
Don't get me wrong I still love the Gladio. I've always preferred "classic" style overdrives to amp in a box style pedals. So the Protein being a Nobels ODR and a Blues Driver works much better for my tastes. That being said... The gladio is the best amp in a box pedal that I've tried and I'd really love to get the single version when it is released. The gladio was just a loaner for the demo so I couldn't do a shootout now I'm afraid 😩
@@JacksonBrooksby gotcha, maybe I'll ad the protein to my overdrive pedal collection and never have to buy an overdrive ever again?! I mean if I get the protein I'll have the Duellist V2, Gladio V2, Paisley Drive V2 and the protein, what else would I need?! They are making a single sided version of the Gladio?! Thats very interesting. The only pedal I'm desperate for a one sided version of is the Bluesbreaker side of the duellist. That is my overall favourite.
Hey man... do you have a dry/wer rig? Does the browne protein has the ability to run the drives in parallel? I can kinda hear a clean guitar next to the driven sound... am I tripping? Sounds amazing...
Interesting! But no this is a single amp setup. One of the things that struck me with this pedal is the clarity of it, so you might be hearing that extra clarity and presence. And you could run this pedal in parallel but you'd need a switcher that can run pedals in parallel (the new G3) and also TRS cables
@@JacksonBrooksby awesome! Yeah! Sounds super clear... very articulate... I run my chase bliss brothers in parallel with a drive and boost... with the boost slightly more present and it sounds clear and clean like that... I just ordered the protein.. you sold me on it... my first bluesbreaker circuit
I stupidly sold my Protein after I bought it (although I did make a profit). I just bought the Kansas City Chiefs edition as we just became Super Bowl Champs!!!!!! 🏈😁
Sounds Great, I just wish it had the option to Step on one-side to switch-off the other side and not be forced to Stack-em??? Those pickups on the Cutlass sound Stratty.
awesome pedal!! i got a question. when i wanna use it in a loopswitcher , how is that exactly done with the send and return of the loops. i wanna be able to switch on/off green or blue channel (or both) with the loop-switcher. so does the blue and the green channel have to be on a different loop? and how is that done?
I haven’t actually looked into getting these made so they’re available. They just custom Barefoot Buttons with my logo on. I will look into getting some made

Can you change the order of it? It seems that the left side is very low gain and right is high gain. I want the high gain to be boosted by the low gain
Technically yes... If you use a switcher system and TRS splitter cables to control each side. Initially I thought the same and wish you could swap the sides more easily, but tbh Browne has designed the pedal to work this way and in my opinion it is flawless
Damn. That green side sounds absolutely beautiful. Have you tried stacking either side to a different overdrive/distortion? If so, how well does it sound?
Yes! I love stacking with this pedal. My preference is running it before other drives to give them a boost but it pretty much works anywhere in your chain
Dipswitch Demos my Protein arrived today. This is an excellent pedal. The two sides have awesome and completely useable settings throughout the sweep of the knobs, and used together allow you to sculpt just about anything you want. Every demo I hear of this box just blows my mind. This is "THE" rock tone we all strive for, at least in that mid-gain Nashville-rock range.
Completely agree!
Great demo btw. I’ve listened to every UA-cam demo on the protein and yours is the best.
Really appreciate that dude!

@@JacksonBrooksby this might sound weird... but any chance to get tabs or something for the very first song you’re playing?

The Dane or the protein? Which one would you pick
Lol. I saw The Dane sitting next to the Protein. Do they play well together?

Nice, could you do a demo of the pedal through a BluesJunior, a much more poplar/affordable for most folks?
I don't actually own a blues junior. I should pick one up!
Is there any chance you can demo this pedal for bass? There's none on UA-cam whatsoever.
Great tones! 3 questions. Have you tried it with TRS cables running each side into a separate loop? Have you tried various voltages to power it? If so, could you demo that?
I have not tried running it in a looper. And I am 99% sure that this can only run at 9V. Running it at any other voltage will damage the pedal
