  • An instrument, based on the gusli found in Novgorod and dated to 1050 AD. This one is strung with nylgut (artificial gut) but real gut and red brass strings are available on request. The original instrument may well have been strung with red brass.
The ballad Kate sings is the Elphin Knight.
    These instruments available from ancientmusic.co.uk

Love the singing at the end. Would like to hear whole song. Really, I played that short bit many times.

@ckandmp thank you, glad you enjoyed it. the song is a version of Child Ballad #4, commonly called The Elfin Knight, The Willow Tree, or sometimes The Outlandish Knight. There are lots of versions, the one Kate sings has words from a combination of several versions and is sung to a tune from the Appalachian region of the USA which she learnt from her brother Jon. You can read the rest of the story here on the Sacred texts website, just search google for Child Ballad 4.

Nice sounds! I gather that by "stop" the strings (which for many stringed instruments means put the finger on the string to alter pitch) you mean mute them so that they do not produce pitched sound when plucked or strummed (in the first demonstration, the video shows the plucking hand when you are talking about the stopping technique). It seems to me that your only pitch choices are those of the open strings, and if that is the case, what are the tunings you might use? I would guess that a gusli player might own several instruments tuned differently so that they can play in different modes or keys to accompany different singers or sound differently, but maybe that is not required in the folk genres?

yes thats right, you touch the open strings you don't want to hear to mute them. As for tunings, the first five notes of a major or minor scale is traditional for kantele, the instrument most closely related to these ancient gusli.
