I was very much under the impression that the Dongle removes the bottom hook so you get far less deeply hooked fish , if you want to use worm baits then I've seen people make clips out of hooks so you can easily thread the worm around it and on to the braid but you dont have the point or barb of the hook
I've often thought of doing this with a chinu for two reasons. For one you have the additional hook like a fixed pennel rig or a knotless knot rig but with a looser bait moving about on the braid and secondly the hook goes on and comes out of an imp or splashdown abit easier. I've been meaning to give it a go.. good to hear you've had success with it.
Used a circle/dongle with worm on a sliding up and over rig on a couple of trips last summer, planning on doing the same this summer too, fishing for stingrays. Way i do it, is take a ragworm pass the circle hook through it and double it over on itself and whip it to the dongle with a little bit of elastic. Take a thin slither of squid pass up and over the hook so it lays either side of the bait. It helps stop the bait being able to be slid off. Then double up another couple of ragworm lengthways and whip to the sides of it to form a nice thick juicy bait. (If that makes sense). It works great, alas only only doggies, thornies and bass last year, no stingrays.
I use something similar to Den Booker's pennel arrangement except I snell the circle hook in place instead of using knotless knot like Dean does. The circle hook stands out off the main line more than with this dongle arrangement. 90% of my fish get the circle hook in the lip

Car..nt see it working if u get an gut hooked under size bass ud have to dispatch it and take it witch is elegal and that ull include include any fish under size
just over complicating fishing now. for years the basics have worked fine now there trying to "carpify" sea fishing. Trust me iv used circles for a long time and bait wrapped up the shank will hook 99% of hounds for certain. fast running fish use circles ,but rays ,bream ,bass etc i use a single chinu and very rarely deep hook any of them , i dont use pennels for bass for fish welfare, its only doggies that tend to take the hook deep but if you strike the bite fast enough you should avoid it . keep it simple its worked for years why change to follow a craze....
There was a time when we used blood loop paternosters and nails banged in to leads for bait clips…. I personally think it’s great that anglers are constantly dreaming up new ideas and ways of going about things to improve their fishing. The dongle isn’t just a trend, it really does work extremely well, so it makes sense to explore it a bit more. Jansen
@mrb.9822 It may be because iv used the dongle alongside a normal single hook dropper for rays and the dropper out fished the dongle 5/1 including 1 missed ray on the dongle. it may well be me and my skill level but i would like to think i no what i am doing. Each to there own i suppose but its not for me , just seems more faff than its worth.

You can use it as a live bait rig, using a No.4/2 J hook to catch, say, a small Whiting or Pout, and leave it out to attract a large Bass or Cod
Tom Bagnall put up a video recently doing exactly that, he used a much shorter dongle so the 'livebait' ends up just below the circle hook

Been doing it like this for years not new I also put a smaller circular hook on the bottom always have lip fish
It looks like the set up for tying the snake flie.
That's another one I'll be trying mate 👍
I use a large split shot on the bottom of the dongle for worms, I find a bottom hook in pennel style always deep hooks fish 👍
Interesting. How do you actually get the worms on to the Dongle?
He probably adds the split shot after baiting up. I could be wrong mind.

@@AndyJohnJones83 Very clever, I like that! Jansen
Might offer a bit of protection against spider crabs biting through the snood
That’s a bonus I hadn’t even considered….

Try 1 foot of braid hook length with super glue on to stiffen it up

It has worked though. All of the bass I’ve landed this season have been well in-size and all have been lip hooked.
Jansen
With that rig set up would you get more gut hooked fish?
So far, no. The majority of the fish I’ve landed on this rig have been hooked on the circle hook, but I’ve also caught flounders on the bottom hook.

Live bait when cod were alive.
