Hiromi just has crazy ability on the piano and this was a rollercoaster of a performance. You never know what she's going to play next from crashing chords to soft lyrical passages but technically she's got it all and more besides. Her playing is full of contrast and rhythmic surprises. Sheer brilliance.
Just got back from seeing her trio at the Saratoga Jazz Festival and was blown away. What a dynamic performer! Virtually every song got a standing ovation and watching these You Tube videos only confirms that what I saw was real.
For jazz piano, anyway, no freakin doubt. I think guys like Jacob Collier might give her a fair run for her money as an overall musician, though. I have NEVER seen someone produce this kind of technical display on a piano, I can tell you that...beyond words. Take a look at Yuja Wang, if you haven't seen her play...from the classical side, she's pretty darned impressive too, especially on the more demanding keywork. I think she plays the flight of the bumblebee in about three seconds (kidding, but it's DARN fast).
I just can't help but laugh and tear up at what I'm seeing. She's shoulder to shoulder with Gershwin and Tatum. They'd probably laugh and cry too. A thing of unmatched beauty her playing!
When I watch this I worry about repetitive strain injury in the years to come....and I can't bear the idea of a future without her playing the soundtrack to me life.
The way she plays, she could induce repetitive strain injury in about 10 seconds. ;-P But she's STILL going strong (stronger, actually) eight years later! ;-) Hopefully it will continue for many many more years. Hell, the backs of MY arms are cramped by the time she gets done with ONE of these pieces, and I'm just watching.
To me, this is the essential Hiromi. She's a show girl herself, quoting stuff all over the place. The perfect blend of entertainment and creative genius.
I play piano, I've been to Japan, I've been studying Japanese for about a year and a half and have listened to countless Japanese musicians. Yet somehow this beautiful little insane orchid slipped through my fingers. After I stopped convulsing on the floor after hearing this I thought to myself, I need a cigarrete. Then all I could muster was a "Fucken A".
Yes, that is the first version of the riff, dating from around 1965. Who knows if Blackmore stole it, or just came up with his riff independently in 1970 (it's pretty easy to play on guitar). But Hiromi's song is a trilogy about gambling/Vegas. I assumed she stuck that in (and it's on the album version too) because SOTW is the most famous song about a gambling house burning down.
i cant stop downloading hiromi vids. the level she plays at ALL of the time is unbelieveable. imagine her playing in 20 years...i hope ime here to hear it....this one is great!!! thanks
Especially when you realize the recorded video frame rate isn't NEARLY fast enough to see her actually pressing individual keys, it's just a total blur.
Fantastic, she makes me understand what other pianists are trying to get at, with ease and clarity, I find her absolutely "state of the art", pure joy.
31 people either hit the wrong key for likes, or they are "sour grape" idiots. I'd be willing to bet that there has NEVER lived a pianist who can play like that, and I'm including the Van Clyburns, the Wangs, the Bachs, Beethovens, and Mozarts, and all the rest of them. This girl CANNOT be human, she almost HAS to be from another plane of existence. That was literally mind boggling, I have NEVER heard sounds like that come out of a piano. I don't know how the backs of her arms don't resemble a macrame wall hanging when she walks away from that, if you get my drift. UN BE LIEV ABLE, truly a phenom.
Yeah, you're right. I don't really remember why I thought otherwise. Maybe I was just trying to draw some attention to Maria Quiet, since I like it. Anyway.
I almost had a mini-heart attack when I accidentally hit the "dislike" button after favoriting the video. I thought I was going to be that guy, but luckily you can hit the "like" button and it changes it. Lucky me!
Buy her "Live at the Blue Note" video to see her joking around with "The Gambler". I wouldn't spoil it, but she's one funny girl. On top of everything else. Hiromi wouldn't be Hiromi without her sense of humour (and her flashes of anger for that matter). It's odd to watch her in a big hall like here and the Marciac videos, and then in a room like the Blue Note. She seems more suited for the big hall. Her energy is too much for a small room.
@goldensleeves No, it's not Smoke on the water; it's Maria Quiet. Feel free to check out the version with Astrud Gilberto here on youtube watch?v=cgIls71_Gmo The original is often the best.
We have one word for this: rasfak! I don't think it's in any dictionary. But we use this word sometimes when somebody really really really, I mean REALLY REALLY REALLY RULES
There are so many quotations in this performance that I have a blasphemic thought: Would it be possible that everything she plays is a endless row of quotations? Who can tell, as nobody knows every tune existing?

I love this lady with all the unbelievable music flowing from her fingertips.
it must feel awesome to be the most talented musician in the world.
David Ballestrino I can agree to your opinion!

John Sikes not only is her technique impressive but her improvisation is like no other musician I’ve heard.
Did Keith Jarrett pass away and no one told me? I love Hiromi, but she still has a long way to go to reach his rarified stratosphere.
@@normanklein3155 No, but unfortunately Keith had a stroke which prevents him from playing publicly any more. So we're left with Hiromi.
3:09 Smoke on the Water! I just love her musical quotations!
José Daniel Rojas Arias Merry agrees to your impressions.
Can't BELIEVE I missed that, good catch.
I love her so much
love it close to the end when she literally beats the piano with her arm and closed fist just like "bam!" ansolutely fantastic.
Yeah, I wonder what that looks like on a score? ;-)
She is really so original. I don't remember I've heard anything like her music.

You can't play piano any "better" than Hiromi because she has an absolutely unfettered pipeline from her soul to her fingertips.
the film editor has given me so much of this performance, such camera too. my love to all
Her playing reminds me what freedom we were born to be is...
When I watch this I worry about repetitive strain injury in the years to come....and I can't bear the idea of a future without her playing the soundtrack to me life.

I am literally feeling art from her performance.
she absorbed in her playing all the history of jazz piano!
I cannot get enough of her. She's fantastic.

yep, she never takes a song off. It's wild, how good she is. I've been playing the piano for 50 years and she boggles my mind.
Just love listening to this gal.
3:10位のsmoke on the water みたいなのかっこいい
Incredible!!!!!!! Love it!
She is my best pianist ^_^
me 2
Absolutely superhuman.
4:45〜I like it. My heart was relaxed.
Like it very much, such a great jazz musician!
extraordinary!
I've never heard the Gambler before, it's evocative as 'Hall of the Mountain King' for me, but with stylish leavings and elements of dark creeps.

!!! A L I E N !!!
Easily the best female pianist that has ever lived.......
I love her also...just hooked onto her 2 momths ago and fell in love....!
I almost had a mini-heart attack when I accidentally hit the "dislike" button after favoriting the video. I thought I was going to be that guy, but luckily you can hit the "like" button and it changes it. Lucky me!
Kills my first theory on the first 31 dislikes. Even out of 17,000 that's WAY too many...should be zero, at the most. Maybe just sour grapes???

She could sell a few of the fast finger passages as ringtones. I would buy some...
I just feel like a "puppet on a string". Hiromi controls all my senses ! What will happen next ?
Christian Duerig . Just let her take you that place , you know float
Wow best and fast
UUUUMPH!!!!!
I want a girl like her.
Did you notice the video time is 13:37?
She's a beast!
Nice "Smoke on the Water" at 3:08
Mind blown... Somebody call 911.
The gambler - Well that escalated quickly
@goldensleeves No, it's not Smoke on the water; it's Maria Quiet. Feel free to check out the version with Astrud Gilberto here on youtube watch?v=cgIls71_Gmo

12:31 brass??
Master play n sound!!
We have one word for this: rasfak! I don't think it's in any dictionary. But we use this word sometimes when somebody really really really, I mean REALLY REALLY REALLY RULES
@junhax I suggest Hiromi's Sonicbloom! It's the best 15$ I ever spent.
3:10 DEEP PURPLE!!!
I see two empty seats at 13:33. Now that is so wrong.
3:10 Deep Purple, Smoke on the water?
I'm inspired to play better but most guys just want to quite playing altogether.
first time I end up a video clapping 8 D
I'm scared
I never meant japanese musicians such great.but then i heared toshinori kondo(trumpet) in the 80's.since then it is increasing genious !
My humble version of the Gambler (she plays that at 8:20)
watch?v=taT6lq7cbKo
Gosh, i love Hiromi ^_^
@steveg2223 sounds like she lost a bit of money
There are so many quotations in this performance that I have a blasphemic thought: Would it be possible that everything she plays is a endless row of quotations? Who can tell, as nobody knows every tune existing?
Art Tatum improved.
Someone please tell me what dvd this is >_
Does anyone know if this vid was performed in Vegas?
heard Beethoven from 0:42-0:45 pathetic sonata isn't ?
