    This is my third top-selling picket planter this season!
    We have planted many different plant varieties in these boxes and they are doing great. I do not use a liner; cedar is naturally weather sealed and will not rot, warp, decay or mold. I also did not seal the boxes with any sort of clear coat or paint. Overtime, cedar will turn from its pretty redish brown to grey when exposed to sunlight for a prolonged period of time.
    These are a great foot-in-the-door project for anybody who is looking to begin selling their woodworking projects, or simply taking their woodworking hobby to the next level. Before these planter boxes, I only made furniture and built things for myself, and family (where I only charged them for the materials). These boxes not only helped me to make my first dollar by woodworking, but when posting this video, I have made $2,512 profit; and yes, thats factoring in my total materials cost, from buyers in a small town of 3000 people.
    Do not take large orders or custom orders without obtaining a deposit. Luckily I had only one person order a taller 25x16x16 box and stop responding to me, his name is Ron Whitaker... Unfortunately I did not take deposits or payment in advance, but these are also not expensive to build.
    Thanks again for watching, and please please please like this video so it can be suggested to other cool cats like yourselves. Bye for now!!

    I have my eye on that next shop tool (either a bandsaw or planer). I've always bought outright, or hinted at gift-giving occasions. You've inspired me to bootstrap it this time and see if I can earn that next tool this way. I like the simplicity and elegance of this design, and you got my sub! I do think that a couple of support cleats nailed/glued from the inside and laying in the bottom boards loosely, will be my preference, based on one I made years ago. Plus, I can make it a selling feature, by putting in 2 levels of support cleats, for short or tall pots, or different depths of soil. But thanks for the inspiration, not only of design, but sharing how you market them, account for costs, etc. Very motivating! Cheers!

      Facebook marketplace is great hunting ground for a tablesaw, otherwise the bixg box stores will always have them. Looking at them more in-depth now I wish I would have bought the Kobalt or Skil model that lets you rip wider than 12 or 16" material, keep that in mind :) Im always touched when people are inspired by my videos and make it for someone else. I just built my first planter boxes the other day, I did lightly sand one side of the pickets , and instead of using the small strip on the bottom, I just spaced the 2 out so no need to drill drain holes at the bottom... and I used a big torch and gave the wood a burnt look.. they came out amazing and sold the pair for 90 bucks... 🎉🎉🎉

    On the big planter box why not use two supports 1,3/4 in the middle where you have placed the bottom board where you divided the box to shoot nails to as nail support from the outside of box , that maybe that will help support the bottom from the potting soil, just a idea I had when I saw u build this . Anyway I really in joy your project of making these, giving us some inspiration to build them.

      This year I added that exact strip for support, the same way I add it to the long 46", short planter box, although Ive had zero issues with 3+ year boxes, its a simple scrap addition and does improve quality :)

    Just a suggestion to maybe save on some material. Maybe use strips for the bottom instead of having a complete base. That would allow for drainage (not sure those 5 holes are enough) and if people are just using plants in a plastic bucket then still allows for plenty of support. Are you doing a complete base to provide more strength perhaps?

    • @WhosTheVoss
      @WhosTheVoss  Рік тому

      I pour my dirt directly into this box, i do not use a liner but it is an option, the slats could work if you were utilizing a bucket or pot inside to hold the dirt. When the dirt inside the box dries up it shrinks about an 1/8" inside the box, so the water runs down the inside. Thats why i drill the holes farther into the center :)

    Sorry for all the comments but I'm commenting as I watch the video. So you don't cut the legs at different widths so you get a uniform look when the legs are butted up against each other right? As in from two angles your legs will appear one width and from the other two angles the legs will appear slightly narrower...correct? Just confirming for my notes :-)

    • @WhosTheVoss
      @WhosTheVoss  Рік тому

      Correct-o. I cut them all 1-11/16", I do square the boxes by making the one side 1-3/4" shorter but the legs I cut all the same. Ive made them skinner before but I thought it looked a little silly. Experiment on a box and see if you like it :)

    Question. I can’t seem to find anyone that carries actual cedar near me and I can’t afford to purchase in bulk for delivery. HoDe has Alta premium, which seems to not be actual cedar for $2.87 or pressure treated pine for $1.98. There’s also a size difference. Alta = 3/4”x6”x6’ and PT pine 5/8”x5.5”x6’. Which would you choose and why? Sorry for the long drawn out question. The PT is obviously cheaper, but it’s pressure treated, which is my main issue.

      You have to be careful with box-store pickets, most of them look a little scruffy. i do not prep my pickets in any way, however, you can hit them with a quick 60 grit sand paper to knock off most of the mold/ green-black spots

    • @WhosTheVoss
      @WhosTheVoss  7 місяців тому

      We have several on our patio that I built two years ago. No rust stains from nails, bottoms are still strong. If you want the cedar red-color to last longer you can add a UV protectant so they do not grey. I do not build them from pressure treated lumber, the cedar is better for insect repellant and the plants :)

      Oooooo 007, 42 off. Not bad, I was 26 off and have built a good few bakers dozen of these and still had to think about my guess. Lol. Not sure where the extra 12 nails came from in the medium box. My last walkthrough it was 80 🤷🤷 thanks for the comment!!

    How's the 46" long box selling?

    • @WhosTheVoss
      @WhosTheVoss  Рік тому +1

      Not too shabby. Many folks buy two or three of them for a fence line or along the side of their house. I market them for $90 as well

      I only had a sign out front of my house and a listing on Facebook Marketplace. Lots and lots of custom orders, and many people mox and matching the ones I have made on here :)

    Do you happen to have an email? I wanted to share some alterations I made to both the small box as well as the large box. Thought you may like them.

    Do you use cedar or pressure treated pine?

    • @WhosTheVoss
      @WhosTheVoss  6 місяців тому

      I always swing towards cedar, its naturally weather ready, repels bugs and looks better than PT :)
