My experience has been that if you are pushing a narrow piece through the blade you are actually putting pressure against the fence. If you finger slips it will move towards the fence, not the blade. I do use a push stick for short pieces that are not long enough to reach the riving knife before the cut is complete. Still have all my fingers after 30 years of woodworking and carpentry.
Big props for tracking even the number of nails used. I'm so tired of "$6 planter boxes OMG!!" but then they use $10 in pocket screws alone, and also you have to buy the plans.
🤣🤣 "$6 project, but, buy the $10 plans on my website first" THATS what I hate the most. Glad it frustrates others as well. Lol thanks for the comment buddy :)
Well you don't have to buy the plans... I did some with pocket screws and it was $2.94 for the screws minus the $.40 cents for nails and it's only $2.50 a build and some designs are just stronger with pocket screws ya it adds a little more time and of course time is money but to each is their own
My 8 year old son and I made one of these today, thanks for the cut list! Even with the list I managed to cut the tops too long THEN too short and had to rip down another picket. This turned into a 3 1/2 picket planter for us but it was a lot of fun.
Great video son. Reassuring me our faith in our youth. One critique, use a push stick on the table saw. I have many friends that can only count to nine.
I just made this and the scraps made perfect little “handles” so it doesn’t have to be lifted by the mitered top lip. Works great and looks great. Thanks dude.
@@WhosTheVoss thanks for sharing and allowing us to help others while making some $. how long do they last without being sealed/stained? if you wanted to paint or seal or stain, what would you suggest?
I finally stopped yakking about doing it and did it. Made a pair for Christmas presents and they look pretty damn good and are damn easy to make. For sure worth it. Our cost for 6' Western Red cedar pickets here in Washington is 4.26 each so *boohoo* not as cheap as others can make them but still totally worth the time. I am a noob wannabe and busted them out in less than 3 hours, doing one atta time. Thanks for sharing Vossman and Happy New Merry Christmas Year!
I made one of these yesterday. It worked out great. When I put it on the driveway to show my wife, my neighbor yelled from across the street "Are you taking orders?". So that is encouraging, should I decide to sell them. Also, I added 3/4"x1" cleats to the inside of one of the sides to support the bottom panels which fit loosely. Thanks again for the video.
Love the video. You should use the scraps. Cut 4 small glue blocks for the bottom. Put them in the corner of the legs on the underside with a little glue. Strengthening everything up including the bottom
I use scraps like the dog ears to stable a small shelf to the bottom of the box, then the floor sits on those. This avoids nailing into the endgrain anywhere and the floor nails are all on the inside.
As an update I finally made my first planter box!! I made a small mistake and ended up putting the bottom on the top and had to pull out the brad nails. 😅I got a bit rushed, but I hid the damage on the outside from me having to drill some shallow holes to remove the brad nails by adding trim on the outside facings. It still looks beautiful regardless! I'm getting lots of friends asking for one now lmao. Thanks for the awesome video I could follow and the cutting plan included!
I loooooove the authenticity in the video in yourself , this video is worth so much more views and likes based on how you do this as a friend and not to just market yourself.
Love the video. I’m in the process of replacing my fence, which was blown down Wednesday night with some powerful thunderstorms here in Houston. I think I’m going to use the pickets and make some of these boxes!
The planters we build together in the video sold very well, but the other half of my sales came from custom sizes. I made a few for a gentleman and he wanted a garden shed quoted, so thats the next video :)
Saw you on tiktok. Built my first one just last night. I messed up a little but it works and I’m excited to put my plant in it. Thank you very much!!!! Also love your energy
My anxiety was going through the roof seeing you use your fingers to push the boards all the way through the tablesaw. My shop teacher always taught us to use a scrap piece of wood, and it’s stuck with me all through my adult life.
Thank you for the video and I really like your presentation style. Clear, concise and without all the unnecessary fluff. Thanks also for the free plans. I don't have cedar fence pickets in my area (South Florida). So, I'll have to make mine with pressure treated fence pickets or pallet wood. Keep the how-to videos coming.
Awesome video man. Love the tips along the way. Definitely making these with my teenage son. Hopefully it becomes a nice side gig for him, if anything itll be a good bonding project.
Where do you sell these and do you have any tips? I’m on summer break and need something to do as this looks cool and why not make some money while on break! Thanks!
I only listed them on Marketplace, but it was late spring/early summer. Theres still plenty of people just starting their gardens though. I made a trio set that sold very well, so did these planters in the video :) good luck!!
Mental block on actual hearing of necessary advice. ZINGGGGG**#@!! !.!__ ,_(then it's too late...) Here we have a smart person with a glaring blind spot. Engineering has a saying, "you can make something foolproof. But you cannot make it damned foolproof".
A word of caution - watching at around 3.10, you use your right hand to push the board through. Do NOT do this! Get into the habit of using a push stick. If you don't then you can almost guarantee that one day the blade and your hand will meet. When that happens, it does not end well for your hand. I speak from experience !
Ive had my eye on one that has a handle and a longer front. I feel more comfortable with the tablesaw wind under my fingernails than I do when using the stock push sticks with the little lip cutouts. :P
Thanks! :) Next is a vacuum hose clip I shot today, then a 7' garden shed in the next week or two. I have 15 hours of footage to cut down to less than hours worth :P
After trying to level it by sanding a corner, checking it, and sanding another corner, I finally gave it an aggressive press and was like "ohh, well thats way faster" 🤣
This comment is why I started posting videos! Im so glad you are going fo give it a shot! I have faith in you, its not too over-the-top complicated and cedar is really sof and cuts like butter :)
Just to add to all the comments, made 3 of these and two of the larger ones you have in another vid, we have to use pressure treated pickets down here in Florida. Sold them all in a week. Thanks for the vids man, keep going.

Maybe do a video on making a plywood push stick. You're fingers are pretty close to the blade pushing the thin strips through.

Criminally undersubscribed. Unbelievably well made video.

Nice! Thanks buddy
I'd love to know how you added handles! I've been moving mine by holding it at the lip since the glue dried 😅
Great work! But, please use a push stick at the table saw. No matter how careful you are, you have to promote safe work practices to others.
Push sticks are in the upcoming video :) thanks buddy!!
Please for the love of your fingers use a push stick
Pushticks are coming! Before this channel I had no saftey glasses, dust filtration or a mask. Im beginning to implement them in the shop :)
This is incredible! Please put more out there like this! You have a knack for presenting. You got yourself a subscriber
Woohooo! Glad you like it :) definitely more to come!!
Killer work man!!!! Tik tok led me here. Me and wife are homesteaders and I love how simple cheap but yet nice these are. I’ll be making a few
