    Maybe do a video on making a plywood push stick. You're fingers are pretty close to the blade pushing the thin strips through.

      My experience has been that if you are pushing a narrow piece through the blade you are actually putting pressure against the fence. If you finger slips it will move towards the fence, not the blade. I do use a push stick for short pieces that are not long enough to reach the riving knife before the cut is complete. Still have all my fingers after 30 years of woodworking and carpentry.

    Big props for tracking even the number of nails used. I'm so tired of "$6 planter boxes OMG!!" but then they use $10 in pocket screws alone, and also you have to buy the plans.

    • @WhosTheVoss
      @WhosTheVoss  11 місяців тому +16

      🤣🤣 "$6 project, but, buy the $10 plans on my website first" THATS what I hate the most. Glad it frustrates others as well. Lol thanks for the comment buddy :)

    • @mathius8645
      @mathius8645 5 місяців тому +2

      Well you don't have to buy the plans... I did some with pocket screws and it was $2.94 for the screws minus the $.40 cents for nails and it's only $2.50 a build and some designs are just stronger with pocket screws ya it adds a little more time and of course time is money but to each is their own

    My 8 year old son and I made one of these today, thanks for the cut list! Even with the list I managed to cut the tops too long THEN too short and had to rip down another picket. This turned into a 3 1/2 picket planter for us but it was a lot of fun.

    I finally stopped yakking about doing it and did it. Made a pair for Christmas presents and they look pretty damn good and are damn easy to make. For sure worth it. Our cost for 6' Western Red cedar pickets here in Washington is 4.26 each so *boohoo* not as cheap as others can make them but still totally worth the time. I am a noob wannabe and busted them out in less than 3 hours, doing one atta time. Thanks for sharing Vossman and Happy New Merry Christmas Year!

    I made one of these yesterday. It worked out great. When I put it on the driveway to show my wife, my neighbor yelled from across the street "Are you taking orders?". So that is encouraging, should I decide to sell them. Also, I added 3/4"x1" cleats to the inside of one of the sides to support the bottom panels which fit loosely. Thanks again for the video.

    As an update I finally made my first planter box!! I made a small mistake and ended up putting the bottom on the top and had to pull out the brad nails. 😅I got a bit rushed, but I hid the damage on the outside from me having to drill some shallow holes to remove the brad nails by adding trim on the outside facings.

    A word of caution - watching at around 3.10, you use your right hand to push the board through. Do NOT do this! Get into the habit of using a push stick. If you don't then you can almost guarantee that one day the blade and your hand will meet. When that happens, it does not end well for your hand. I speak from experience !

    Hi, this is a great video of explaining the why's you are doing what you are doing. I'm always looking for videos and projects for my students. This is the simplest and best 3 picket planter box I've seen. Not to mention, you included cut plans. Please take this as helpful and not a slam. I can't have my students watch this video because of your table saw technique, very dangerous for new woodworkers. I'll try to show something of it and give you full credit. But please remember that all levels of woodworkers can be watching your videos. Always use safeguards and even explain why you are using them. Okay, nuff said :) Thanks again and keep up the good work.

      Thanks for the compliments. And yes, great call out about new woodworkers. 4" is the minimum finger-closeness for the tablesaw. Although I am working within my personal comfort level, I can see how it shines negatively for the safety of new woodworkers. Thanks again! There will soon be a video your students can watch, I promise :)

    I have been using polyurethane construction adhesive for these types of projects and I like it, thanks to John Heisz. The planter is cool.

      Thank you for watching! More than happy to supply the free plans, after my slight annoyance when trying to figure out the science behind the three picket planters. Lol

      @@WhosTheVoss I've been making a few different versions of three picket planters for a while now and I hit exactly the issue you talked about with regard to wood movement. I also now do what you do and leave cutting the mitered top pieces till the very end. It's not been quite as bad with the Western Red Cedar pickets but when I've tried the treated pickets it has been terrible.

    Came from TikTok… just wanted to see the process. I have none of these tools and never worked with wood. However, the directions are simple and clear if I had the tools.
    So the $10 would be more like several hundred dollars in my case. 😂
    Thanks for sharing!

    Great lil project. I built one with ease but the center piece on the bottom was to narrow. I think it’s because my planks were smaller that 5 1/2”. Thanks Voss.

      Ive had quite a few with a 1/8" gap on each side of the bottom board, just gives it a little more drainage ;) glad you got to build a few!!
