Used to be a time in American media where an expert came on to address an issue without the need to have some anti positional person to be on as well in the name of being "fair and balanced". Fact is fact, we don't need an anti fact opinionated person to debate every single thing.

I spent several decades enforcing civil and administrative cases at EPA: put simply the big problem is corporations 'captured' the federal and state agencies that enforce the laws. Thus criminal cases are almost never brought and the few civil cases that are brought in federal court are slaps on the wrist because the Executive, DOJ and EPA are corporate biased - the dereg agenda. Administrative penalties are small cases, predicted on facts and law that are rarely disputed by the defendant.

In completely agreement. In fact, I was wondering if anyone else felt this way. In all these distractions we seem to have forgotten that Citizen United = The government staring you down and spat in your face saying corporations have more say about how this country should be governed than you. The SEC/IRA/EPA are just completely paralyzed because of the politician-lobby-CEO HR recycling but seems that most Americans are completely paralyzed when threatened with higher prices for gas/eggs/vacay. All the while egg/oil producers are reporting record breaking earning yet some Americans choose to blame Biden. This circular idiocy is how this country is on her knees thanks to GQP's grand plan to keep America stupid. If you disagree, there's google. Self-education isn't hard, Americans or Russian trolls.

TWENTY THREE YEARS?! Crikey you do realise you can leave, right? I know your propaganda makes it sounds scary, but outside white iran you will find a MARKEDLY higher standard of living. Personally I would recommend Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, or Iceland. All extremely modern nations with technology that will absolutely blow your mind. A few examples just to give you something to google and whet your apetite : indoor plumbing, 24/7 uninterrupted electricity, decorum, dignity, socially conscious governance, and--- oh this is big for you. WOMEN have HUMAN RIGHTS here. No, honestly, I swear it's true! Imagine having a say in what your uterus is used for, instead of being farmed like an ambulatory sunflower coughing up a baby every year, isn't that amazing?! Then there's healthcare and education at no cost. That's completely normal here, which you'll undoubtedly discover as soon as you damage yourself accidentally and discover the novelty of not having to sell one organ to pay for repairs to another. Humane wages for human workers, another point. Sure we do actually tax companies here, which I'm guessing equates to "RED MENACE" in your media, but I promise it works. Public transport, another pluspoint. Connects literally every village town and city no matter how small, to a europe-wide network. We do have regulations on just about everything to safeguard human safety, animal welfare, and an environmentally conscious mentality, so that might be a bit of a downer for you. Oh and don't bring your guns. I'm serious: if you're the firearm-fellating type, just stay there. You are already in the penal colony for gun-nutters.

The purpose of critical thinking is to understand what you don't understand.
Too many people think the "critical" in critical thinking means to criticise so they think that arguing (in an adversarial context) for the sake of arguing is critical thinking - ITS NOT.
The "critical" in critical thinking means to CRITIQUE as in assess or judge the evidence being discussed (not argued) to reach a conclusion or understanding. It includes considering other viewpoints rather than taking a side and fighting for it.

Something that I feel like is a huge blind spot in how our democracy is built....
I heard my whole life that voting is one of the most important duties of a citizen for democracy. If I want to change the world in any meaningful way, I must vote. Lots of pressure to vote.
I got registered to vote. I went down to the polls. I went to cast my ballot for the president. I was overwhelmed with the number of things I was voting for with absolutely no context. Commissioners, clerks, treasurers, sheriffs, register of deeds, local judges, the list goes on.
It is considered reprehensible to vote based on party alone, but I don't know anybody who has ever felt fully informed about what will be on the ballot, much less have a considered, nuanced opinion for. That's without mentioning the number of unopposed incumbents, and what one is supposed to do if when their party is not represented on a ballot measure.
I understand that the common advice is to be more diligent about researching what it is you are voting for. However the reality is that the amount of information one has to sift through to be fully informed on a ballot is going to be overwhelming for the vast majority of voters whose lifestyle is not primarily political - nurses and mechanics and IT professionals and teachers, who are going to school and raising families and working overtime to pay the bills. The only way to know everything that will be on the ballot is independent research, and then spend time researching who should be the Kansas Commissioner for Insurance. At least with today's society, it is unreasonable to expect even a fraction of your standard voting Americans will be familiar with the instances of problematic rulings from local judges, or what the function of "Intermediate Appellate Court Position #6" is, or that the "opposing" nominee for county clerk is actually rather centrist and way more efficient and/or appropriate for the position.
I'm a transwoman and CNA in Kansas. I want to live in a society that is accepting of who I am and protects me the same as they would anyone else, but I want to contribute by being a CNA, not sinking all my free time into LinkedIn pages trying to find ethical and moral write-ins for local judges seats that will ultimately go to an incumbent. If voting for judges is the answer, I'm willing to do that. It's just when I get to the voting booth and there's several boxes of unopposed incumbent judges and there's been absolutely no conversation on them.... Well, similar to the rules with the SEC, it feels like a situation that is intentionally convoluted and difficult to penetrate. I get more frustrated every time I hear the answer to a problem in society is "VOTE!" because the dysfunction of what goes on behind the ballot curtain is a very real part of the problem.
Perhaps I'm wrong - if you are a regular US voter and you've never voted for a name you had never seen before, let me know down below

You have to understand that this is by design. On a long enough timeline the purpose of any institution is self-perpetuation. Convincing citizens that voting is the ONLY acceptable exercise of a righteous patriotism and fervent democratic zealotry is laughable. This is mostly true for many of the reasons you point out, but it is also true for another important one: There is no way to vote against the interests of the powerful. Our two party system presents us with a false dichotomy that caters to our worst tribal impulses while insulating hegemonic control by corporations. There is no way to vote against the interests of Goldman Sachs, they are undefeated in electoral wins. When both political parties are owned by the same interests, what choice do we really have? So we attempt to to tear each other’s throats out over social issues while power continues to consolidate. We have to bridge this divide and recognize that we’ve been had.

You're right, it takes a lot of research to know who to vote for, and that is why many people just vote a party ticket. Sometimes if I don't know who to vote for, I don't vote for any of them. This is precisely why I love the system we have in Washington State. All our elections are fully mail-in, and we are provided with a voter guide in addition to our ballot that provides information on each candidate and proposition on which we are asked to vote. While the position statements provided aren't always as good as they should be and can be confusing and misleading, we are still able to do our research and place an informed vote should we choose to do so. It is safe and secure(only one ballot gets sent to each voter, and we report if it is not delivered to us so we can get a replacement, making fraud essentially non-existent). Drop boxes are easy to locate and postage is now prepaid also, removing all barriers to voting. I've lived in many states, but nowhere have I found voting as engaging as I do in Washington. I wish that all states would adopt the system we have here, and encourage voters across the country to press your lawmakers to adopt a similar system.

I looked around and wondered why so many others didn't feel the same way, and felt sort of alone.
Hearing these scholars voice similar concerns that "[No, there really isn't any solution.]" sort of... vindicates(?) my pessimism.

After fighting so long so hard yet he couldn't change anything. the reason being the education people that listens to him were already thinker but who needed to hear don't tolerate. Americans should try to have a conversation I know it's hard. but you've to try. we can agree to disagree. just don't give up hope. We've abandoned the hope of idealistic society long ago. can't we've a reasonable one. I am not american. live almost a poor country doesn't have that much money either. I could link to you a youtube channel where you can find hope. although it's in bengali however you don't have to understand the language to see the light of hope in their eyes. aren't asking for donation or anything just support humanity in your local surrounding. you'll find the reason to fight or strive. sorry for the long post. if you're interested you can search **Free Motion** on youtube. have good day. bye

The American empire is in decline, and we're fully in the start of the decadence stage right now. The Ottomans, the Chinese towards the end of several dynasties, the Romans, the Greek city states, even 18th century France; all of them ceased being functional because elites started plundering their societies at the expense of the people who actually did the work that needed to be done. The details are a little different, given the enormous changes the Information Age has ushered in, but the dynamics are the same.

Seems like our 3 branches of gov system has been broken. Judicial branch has a lot more power and packing the courts leads to eliminating previous legislation and promoting future legislation. It does not matter what is in the actual consitution if the judges can decide whatever they want. We see that and a riling up of the religious mob that denies observation. I think the goal is to eliminate separation of church and state to create a religious closed minded rigid state.

Calvin Baxter, Hold the phone, bro! Agree the the court is legislating from the bench. Agreed they are as parochial as all get out. Agreed there has been increasing disregard for fidelity to previous rulings (starry decisis). Packing the court is controversial because the Judges all know more judges equates to less power for each Judge. Do you know anyone who wishes to give up control? Me neither. But the case load ignored by the highest court in the land is another breakdown in justice leading to increased strife. Many more Supreme Court Justices would theoretically be able to hear more cases. These are final appeals for many, if the court won't hear them, those plaintiffs go forever unserved. The new rulings will be based on who is more influential to the court. If the big business seems unstoppable, we can impeach all judges who fail the simple test of good behavior in office. Most fail big time. This is precisely why the Right-wing jurists are 'in cahoots'. They all hang together, as opposed to hanging individually. If them we elect are spineless, it isn't the system's fault. Until WE have a spine, we'll have more Jell-O in office and on the bench. Justice means willing to take or give a bloody nose.

This is one of the rare instances where one solution could solve the root cause of several problems, the dear Founding Fathers neither thought of nor regarded as a problem at all.
    Introducing: The Fundamental Rights Amendment!
Freedom of press and freedom of worship were addressed already but two other fundamental rights that any other modern nation has codified into their constitution is shockingly absent in the US Constitution and its amendments:
The right to an adequate standard of living, or in other words: "Human dignity shall be inviolable" (German Basic Law Article 1 sentence 1, a sentence which I am eternally grateful for and which has been massively influenced by F.D. Roosevelt and the then brand new UN)
The right to life and physical as well as mental integrity (from the 2nd article; I added the mental integrity part because I feel like that was overlooked when the German constitution was written. Nowadays we know how much damage mental abuse can bring about)
With such an amendment you would have the undeniable groundwork to argue for consumer protection in every regard (not only a protection from governmental overreach or negligence) as well as a binding limitation to the way gun ownership is dealt with AND an argument for not only women's health regarding abortions but all situations where the life of someone is threatened in their dignity, mental or physical integrity if they don't receive the treatment or protection they need. The effects of this amendment would cost trillions of dollars because they would mean that infrastructure has to be a top priority, that basic health care has to be provided (although not necessarily for free) and the way gun ownership is not supervised has to be changed drastically (for example establishing an infrastructure around background checks, licenses, police certificates and the creation of bottle necks - my proposal: let people buy any non-military grade firearm they want but control the sale of ammunition)
I will never not be shocked by the fact that the nation which helped Germany recover from a horrifying path of (self) destruction and had a great role in drafting the Grundgesetz to this day doesn't constitutionally garantue her own people access to non-poisonous water or grants them meaningful safety.

One of the problems of the US being one of the oldest democracies (technically it’s more a republic though) is that Americans have a hard time amending the constitution. It’s almost sacrilegious to make changes. There needs to be a change in mentality to see the constitution as a means to an end instead of the end itself. Also Americans disagree fundamentally what that end is.

@@robertcammon5969 I would have preferred all this not to happen in the first place, but yeah, best thing we could do was learn and evolve. I would certainly hope that others learn the hard truth about their home countries, too and see that what happened in Germany could have happened anywhere else at the time, and partly already did. As much as we continue to learn about German history it was a huge mistake for the other countries involved on either side to demonise us and shift public attention away from their own problems. Instead of openly admitting that there's a problem that needs to be addressed, you only hear things like "no, there are no Nazis in the UK, France, Scandinavia or the US - only Germans can be Nazis" or "Italy never had a problem with fascism, we ousted Mussolini after he somehow got elected and re-elected until he became dictator, but that wasn't us, we're all the descendants of partisans" and of course "my father/mother/grandparents were all in the resistance".
And Chamberlain's appeasement strategy - although coming from a good place - was not helping either. Just as it doesn't help in the current war in Ukraine that Europe's leaders (and German politicians at the frontline) tried the same with Putin. But where Chamberlain felt it necessary to prevent another war at all costs Schröder and Merkel shouted "Wandel durch Handel" (change through commerce) and thought they could buy Russia's and China's friendship as well as profit from it.
Can we please learn now that you don't suck up to authoritarians, no matter if they're labelled communists, capitalists, fascists or theocrats?

The US government sold out the American people to oil and weapon companies at the end of World War II.
George Carlin and many others have said, "Germany lost World War II, but Fascism won." What we've known as "government" for our entire lives has been a corporate enterprise since the very moment that industrialized war became standard. It is called the "military-industrial complex." Our entire economy is based on it. Since 1945, the US government has designed and enforced a system that makes and sells more guns and bombs all over the world to secure the supply of petroleum for production and transportation. Every arms deal, Cold War, and Middle East invasion has been about protecting a global power structure that guarantees a constant supply of oil to fuel the world's economy.
By replacing fossil fuels with industrial hemp, the power of production for the world's fuel supply will transfer to the hands of the world's working class instead of being in the hands of dictators and arms dealers.
Watch the 1942 US Department of Agriculture video, *Hemp for Victory.* End Cannabis prohibition, make transportation fuel from industrial hemp, replace fossil fuels, reduce corporate lobbying, and ultimately stop climate change. This 14-minute US government video is the key to changing the world, and that is why it is never talked about, even while there is an official US government link to the video.
There was a bill introduced in the US House of Representatives titled HR 3652, the *Hemp for Victory Act of 2019.*

The problem with all of that is, _the people_ actually hold the power in a democratic society. If you think getting rid of government is going to solve all our problems, keep in mind that society hasn't done a great job of corralling its common interests to keep the government in check. What do you think happens when you remove the hierarchy of power? I'll bet you whatever you'd like to wager that a large portion will be disinterested and either go with the flow or ignore it altogether; another portion will look for some kind of order and leadership because _they_ don't know what to do; and a small minority will rely on their charm and charisma to guide all those poor lost souls to the promised land.
Before you know it, you've re-invented the barter system, and tokenized favors for easy transferability until you've reinvented money. The group will have coalesced around charismatic leaders until you've re-established the hierarchy, and we'll be right back to divisions of what may as well be the systems we already had before.
It's human nature. You can't rip out all the existing systems and replace them with new ones and expect it to work any better. The only way forward is a continual process of tweaking the variables and plugging the holes. That's the way it has always been, and the way it'll always be.

    • @VeganAtheistWeirdo
      @VeganAtheistWeirdo 2 роки тому

@@nickwallette6201 _The problem with all of that is, the people actually hold the power in a democratic society._
*In theory,* yes. But the "democratic" society we're in was founded to bolster the welfare and consensus of only men of European (mostly British) descent, and the overwhelming beneficiaries of the resulting establishment have been less than subtle in defending their position as _those who make the rules and those for whom the rules work._
If you really look at the current situation in the US, with a SCOTUS that shrugs at egregious gerrymandering to disenfranchise entire communities, and still see a democratic society in which the people hold _any_ power... you need to wake up.

    • @nickwallette6201
      @nickwallette6201 2 роки тому +2

@@VeganAtheistWeirdo No, I don't need to "wake up." I see two branching scenarios from that synopsis.
On one hand, sure, let's dismantle the whole system. Well, again, the people who stood by and let all of that happen are still the same people. The people who think there's some kind of justice in their entitlement are still there, still thinking they own the place. What now? All you've done is broken down the framework that kept all the casually-invested people on their track. Do you think suddenly everyone will want to contribute, equally, and share the fruits of those contributions, equally? What, in all you've seen of mankind, leads you to believe _that_ is a likely outcome? Or do you just believe that we're all better off alone? All 7 billion of us. There's room enough for everybody, right?
Then there's the other path. I think we've diagnosed quite a few of the failings that allowed things to get to where they are. There are too many too comfortable with the status quo, while a sizable portion of the population goes without.
Well, I'm a beneficiary of the status quo, and while I don't feel like I've got any particular power, I do feel like I've probably benefited from privilege that I didn't ask for. It's my demographic that is the agent of change -- people, like me, that see things are kinda %#$@ed up, and don't think it's in anyone's best interest for things to keep going that way, despite the evidence that, perhaps, things continuing along this path could stack the deck in my favor. It's a superficial advantage at best, in the long term, and I want no part in continuing that legacy. I'm not going to vote someone into office that is going to gerrymander neighborhoods in hopes of diluting the minority vote. I'm not going to stand for someone putting in unnecessary roadblocks to keep someone else from using their voice. I _am_ going listen to what real conservatives have to say and try to find some middle ground, so they have an alternative to the far-right mafia that the Republican party has become. I'm one person, and I'm not going to fix this myself, though.
It's an imperfect system, but the only thing it takes is for people who give a crap to push the token toward it being a _more perfect_ system, and being vigilant enough to call foul when things look to be veering off the rails. You don't just throw in the towel and expect human nature to change. You get in there and use what meager power you've got to contribute to the sum total.
I *do* believe it's a democracy, because you can see those who want to take advantage of the status quo get emboldened when they feel their base is behind them. So, that begs the question: What if their base _isn't_ behind them?
I never thought I'd see half my family, who are conservative, turn against the party. But they did. It isn't over yet.

John! This conversation enforces a theory that I’ve been forming lately (though I’m sure it’s not an original thought).
The world is told that the Republican Party is the freedom party while the Democratic Party wants to rule your life. I suggest this is not the case.
It is my belief that Liberal policy and agenda is about setting out guidelines for what you CAN do, while conservative policy and agenda is about what you MUST NOT do. “You cannot immigrate here” “you cannot have an abortion” “you cannot tax me” “you cannot tell me to take a vaccine” VS “If you’re buying a gun, do this” “If you want this, pay that” “if you want to go out, ware this mask and take this vaccine”
The idea that freedoms you have must be protected at all costs, prohibits sacrificing to gain freedoms you do not yet have.
I was once sitting with a friend when I got a call from a mechanic who was working on my car. The mechanic suggested some maintenance along with the repairs, which I approved. My friend was taken aback “why would you send money on that, you didn’t need to?” My response was to compare my vehicles running costs to theirs. While they had spent almost nothing in maintenance, the repairs nearly cost them everything…

The problem is that juries only hear cases that prosecutors bring. If the SEC brings a case under an SEC violation, the jury can't turn around and decide the defendant committed criminal fraud and should go to jail - they only decide on the claim raised.
The actual impact of this would be a sharp reduction in actions brought. Federal agencies are reticent to bring cases to trial given the uncertainty and expense of the process. If every case is forced to be either jury or nothing, alot of the time they will choose nothing - especially with how underfunded they are.

Genius idea. Except there's a reason why regulatory agencies have emerged over the past hundred years, in place of tort law and jury trials. And the reason is, practically no ordinary people have the resources to pursue tort claims against mega corporations for decades after the damage has already been done to them, and seek judicial remedies against those companies.

1:00 Thank you Jon for calling this out. Yeah, Gary's job is not to deliver. He was groomed and placed there, because he was a former Citadel employee, yes, yes... that's right, worked for the same Ken Griffin that committed perjury in front of the house committee last year, yes that Citadel. We know this btw from the Robinhood lawsuit that he and all of Robinhood lied under oath. Here's something real juicy too. So Gary supported the repeal of Glass-Steagall along with Bill Clinton, paving the way to allow banks to dip into everyone's retirement and life savings and gamble with that money. This was put in place by FDR as one of the reforms to prevent the Great depression from happing again.
Would be a shame if it was all lost in a extremely overvalued car, home and stock market, while interest rates abnormally low, at the great benefit to shorting hedge funds and their cellar boxing scam (see BCG Group). Of course, that also means that because inflation is out of control and interest rates are so low, there is no money in savings accounts, and instead has inflated cars, homes and the stock market into bubbles, all on margin/debt the likes of which we have never seen. We should have crashed a few years before the pandemic even happened, let that sink in (google "S&P 500 margin balance Superstonk") . Ohh and inflation is out of control because the private federal reserve printed 80 percent of the money in the past two years, and the only solution to inflation is increasing interest rates, however the car, house and stock bubbles and the short hedge funds are all dependent on interest rates being low in order to not collapse. What a predicament we are in, a dammed if you do, dammed if you don't scenario. We need to increase interest rates in order to get inflation under control and force people to save, but doing so will burst all the bubbles.
Ask yourself this one question, how did BTC and ETH skyrocket so fast over these short few years btw???? while it's a bad investment short term (see Michael Burry) due to the need for liquidity during this crash, in the long term it will come back stronger (see Cathie Wood) and I believe her, because of this simple realization. They don't print BTC or ETH... but they keep printing money all over the world and then they redistribute it to all their corrupt crony friends, this does two things. It devalues the money and then other money like BTC and ETH become more valuable as time goes on (except in moments where liquidity is needed). The other thing is this enables powerful monopolies to stay on top, and it's like walking into every single bank and bank account and stealing from every single working person and they never even have to walk into the bank. They just print more money, who cares the value of it, if you can just print more of it. This stifles innovation and competition and of course all that corruption money flows into politics and the media. Nothing is delivered anymore excepted hate and blame and excuses, this is why you have hate based politics. Because you need a distraction on what has become the 24/7 "news" cycle.

@@aquietwhyme That's fine to disagree with me on that, I don't know which aspect you disagree on. I would never tell anyone to buy something especially for my own gain. My next plays are going to be essential companies, and I will put some money into BTC and ETH yes, but I am more interested in innovations in Cyptos and NFTs. Simply because, of this reason. we used to put a lot of money into the distribution of Stock Certificates and security within those certificates, however, we have transitioned to a digital model, you cannot get a Stock Certificate that actually is proof of ownership, instead it's kept by either the DTCC or Registered with Computershare. Innovation is going to happen sooner or later and I believe that we are at the turning point for that. Wall Street and Bay street and the USD and CAN and all the other printed currencies are deeply corrupt, and I am betting on being in on the next step in the evolution of trading. I bet they are missing the boat and the horse is out of the barn and they don't even realize it. For better or for worse
I am not interest in Apes and other pixel art, no more than I would be interested in a cigarette company or an Oil Company. Those are not bets that I am interested in but what I am interested in is innovation, and also, I want to build a foundation on some blue chip stocks that are depression proof. So that is how I do my bets, I am not providing any financial advice and I would never tell you to buy anything that I am buying.
I understand peoples frustration with all the crypto scams and its a fresh hell, and I hate how it's giving a bad name to real innovation, it's the wild west, now I also don't like the deeply corrupt Wall/Bay Street and the Central banks printing all the money, so you have a deeply corrupt and deregulated insiders market and infrastructure to funnel wealth through a corrupted government to ensure that bad leadership stays on top. So that is the devil we know. The only way I figure I can make money is to operate within this corrupt casino and learn how to be the best blackjack player, because working 8-5 on a slot machine with they feed me crumbs never worked for me. Now I may not like playing black jack, I may not like the house, or any of that... but I know one thing, I am smart enough to realize that I am getting no where playing the worst games in the house, Keno or the slots. So I have to master the only skill based game in the house. Black Jack, whether I like it, or I hate it. It doesn't much matter.
So I am investing safe on one hand and then gambling on big winners on the other, and hopefully I can pick winners that are going to be the shape of the future of trading. If that all makes sense.
Don't want to buy what I want to buy, that is perfectly fine with me. Just don't give up on saving and investing, I am interested in holding ... veeeeerrrrryyyy loooonnnnggg term.

ACOG specifically recommends that for childless women and/or women under 30 you should counsel the patient extensively before offering them permanent sterilization, which amounts to “push back on the patient a lot to make sure they REALLY want what they’re asking for.” Again, the data show that even at current rates, *too many* women are being offered surgical sterilization that they will regret.
I also notice that accounts like these are always suspicious. You may really know someone who is married with children and nonetheless required extraordinary “proof” that she wanted surgical sterilization. But it’s a bit hard to believe that you or anyone else with similarly garbled anecdotes is telling the story correctly when they’re ignorant of basic relevant facts, such as that the procedure in question is tubal ligation, not hysterectomy. And tubal ligation is offered as a matter of course to almost every woman undergoing a c-section in the US (with scheduled c-section now being extremely common); it’s elective tubal ligation as a separate procedure that elicits pushback…again because the data support exactly that practice.

Discrimination is discrimination, and it's not OK regardless who the target du-jour is at any moment.
Society has entertained a certain degree of this because, well, frankly, the rich white male has been in a position of privilege for a while, and some ire is absolutely deserved. Hearing Mr. Stewart talk is refreshing in the mediascape. Humanely oriented. No hate. . He doesn't have to think about how he comes across. What a decent human looks like.

Change “conservative” to “government officials” and you are right…no difference between the RNC and DNC..just one big club and your not in it. Divide and distract is the name of the game
