Thanks a lot for the tip! I was trying to start my car for 30 min yesterday and I was in the middle of Stockholm at an expensive parking.
I was about to give up and call a towing truck and then I found your video and I opened the ABS module and cleaned it with what I had (mostly blew on it) and it started so I could drive it home!
Thanks again! You saved me a lot of trouble and money 😀
a more detailed description of the problem and how to fix it: ua-cam.com/video/MmZalE0eiYE/v-deo.html
ABS module failure = no crank no start. Absolutely brilliant. Can't imagine why they went out of business.
TBF the CANBUS system was more of a GM thing than just Saab. They just had not kept up. Other CANBUS cars launched around the same time had addressed this problem years earlier.
It also suggests that Saab and GM generally weren't using DFMEA tools properly during the engineering process. Again something that had become commonplace over the previous 25 years (I was doing detailed DFMEAs on Range Rover P38 in 1991). This was a monumentous failure on GMs part especially given that DFMEAs were being used as evidence in US product liability cases.
Interestingly though, if this comms issue occurs whilst driving, the aircon stops, but the car keeps driving, so the issue HAD been considered by Engineers.
Blame GM for it
@@CycloneCyd how did you unhook that piece at approximately 0:24? I can’t get it unhooked and don’t wanna break anything

Thank you so much. Because of your videos I was able to repair my Saab 9-3 2.8 Aero. And I also learned a lot and understand that car much better. Before I thought everything in electric is broken. This no start was make me getting crazy. Greetings from Germany 🙌🏻🙏🏻 For me I changed the ECU, the ABS-module and the purge valve,.because my car didn't start well after getting fuel. So it was a whole journey with all it's issues. The ECU came from USA, the purge valve from Italy and the ABS-module as a spare part from a 9-3-driver near by. I have had to change an other valve behind the purge valve, too. It was broken (maybe I destroyed it as I changed the purge valve) and it eems to be there for the breaking system. Holy....don't want to know how expensive this repair would have been, if I didn't do it by myself. I paid 260 Euro for ECU and 120 Euro for the copy service, 45 Euro for ABS-module, 50 Euro for purge valve, 50 Euro for the other valve, 70 Euro for TechII service.
Love it when motorists share hot tips to diagnose troublesome faults.
More to come!
Thank you. You are a life saver. I was on a trip and this happened. Saw this clip, removed the connector. I could not find cables, but when I re-connected, it started right up. I did have a check engine light and stability control system failure warnings for a day, but went away as I was going to get the codes read. Thanks again.
Yes, sometimes the loose connections are intermittent. Waggling the connector or disconnecting and reconnecting can remake those connections. That should be regarded as temporary though, the problem won't fix itself!
I've had this problem these several days, and it was making me so frustrated. I watched your video and cleaned the abs module with the contact cleaner, and it just worked!!!! Marvelous tip thank you.
See the how to fix video: ua-cam.com/video/MmZalE0eiYE/v-deo.html
Your awesome!!! You just saved me some money. We been trying to figure this out for a month. 5 min after watching this video it cranks no problems.
and how to fix it: ua-cam.com/video/MmZalE0eiYE/v-deo.html
Nice one, been trying to start it for 20 minutes, saw your video and just wiggled the connector to the ABS ECU and it started first time. Might be why I occasionally get warnings about traction control disabled (or something along those lines!)
ua-cam.com/video/MmZalE0eiYE/v-deo.html
Thanks big man, you saved lots Ghana cedis, am in Ghana and you have saved me a lots Thanks again
love it when the first video you come across is the fix! thanks!
I will try this tomorrow, sounds promising :-)
Classic Saab, dry solder joints. When something in my 9000 didn't work anymore usually a quick re solder solved it.
Hardly a car built that doesn't suffer similar problems eventually.
Thanks, I had it a few times
Do you mean you had this problem but it was intermittent? Sometimes if you waggle the ABS connector it'll allow a start because the pins make contact with the board again. I'm going to do a video on how to repair this fault soon. I'm waiting on a 2ndhand ABS module to arrive.
The odds are high. 2.0 or 2.8 both have the problem. Grind open the module, roflow the connector and glue back shut. And fixed.
Applies to ALL 9-3s, no matter the engine variant
U absolute legend 🙌
Hi I've got the same fault. No crank traction control failure fuel gauge doesn't work and fuel pump doesn't prime. Tried your by pass but still didn't work. Took the abs module apart and all connections look ok. I'll re solder them anyway but any other ideas ta
How on earth would you even know this but well done
Wonderful piece of tech.😁
It's because the ECUs comms system is wired in series. Modern cars wire them individually back to BCM
Tak!
děkuji, velmi si toho vážím
Thats a great tip. I've had problems with a number of ignition modules that stop working or very unreliable, very inconveniently. Is there a shortcut/easy way to install a push button start as backup?
A push button start is possible, others have done it, but I don't think it would help with this situation.
@@CycloneCyd The ignition is switching on ok. Its just the final turn to crank that ends up being unreliable. I'll try one more module and see what happens. Cheers
You know what would be a good video changing the positive battery cable on the saab
The one from the alternator to battery OR the one from battery to fuse box OR both?
Great idea though, I'll look into that.
Happen to me…Saab repair shop sent it out for rebuild …cost me $900… ten years ago…. Wish I new this trick then…👍✌️
$ouch! Loads of ECUs in loads of cars suffer this type of issue.
Not just cars - I've repaired loads of gas boiler ECUs this way for a local Gas Engineer. Saved his customers £000s.
@Cyclone Cyd thanks for sharing your knowledge! It is very helpful...Cheers from the states!
Hi Cyd, can I leave this jumper in place for next 24hr...as I need to use the car until I get some time to make the permanent fix? Right now... I have to insert jumper to every time i want to start car...
Your thoughts?
Thanks
Frank
@@FranksWorld1 yes, you can, the car is driveable, BUT remember your ABS/traction/ESP will not be operational, so perhaps be a little extra careful, especially if you have to drive in the wet.
@@CycloneCyd understood…gonna attempt solder repair in a week or so…just want to avoid lifting hood everywhere I go to restart the car…
Thanks for the reply! And there is a coffee coming your way!
Cheers!

I had stability and traction control warnings in the dash. I did this and those went away, but the starter still wouldn't do shit. It just began one day after a drive it died at idle in the parking lot. Started it again and it idled for about a minute and died again after that, it would start sometimes and not even crank other times. Now it won't crank at all.
Im not a mechanic, but it sounds like a bad crank position sensor. Sometimes the car will crank no start. Sometimes it will run rough. Sometimes will not crank at all. From what I hear. Hope you've figured out the problem already.
Amazing tip.
Working very well, my SAAB 93 2.0T 2008.
Thank you so much.
I'm also impressed with the old Nokia phone!!!!! 😍😅
It was my Dad's (he passed away in Dec) and I'm using the number to enter "make me a winner" on Planet Radio. It still works great. 👍
@@CycloneCyd ohhh I'm sorry to hear......I bet the battery life lasts for at least a week on one charge lol 👏🏾😂. P.s keep up the good work, appreciating the content 👊🏾
I was just going to say! My favorite phone. It was amazing.
Awesome
Thanks.

I have a Saab 9-3, model year 2003, version 2. When I park the car and leave it for 8-10 hours, it won't start in the morning. All the electronics work (like the radio and lights), but the engine doesn't get power to start.
To get the car running, I open the hood and connect a cable from the starter relay to the negative terminal on the battery while the ignition is on. The car then starts immediately. After this, I can start the car normally with the key until I leave it again for several hours, and the problem occurs again.
Does anyone know what the problem might be?
Hey Cyd, I`d be willing to look at the old ABS unit for you. Shouldn't be too hard to sort. Frank.
Thanks for offer, Frank. I dare say there may be others who'd be interested.
Today's video is how to get it apart and repair it along with a little preventative maintenance.

Awesomeness
Is it okay to drive the car for a short while with this fix?
To go home to your own shop etc.
Mine will do this sometimes but if i leave it a few hours it will start fine . Could this be the problem?
I have the same problem in my saab. Somebody knows where i can find those cables?
Does this also happen to the 2004 9-3?
If it clicks only....is it same fix? If I hopd key to start my battery cables eventually get warm and the starter gets hot....I put in new battery.i even tried to turn the main pulley and its unable to turn..or atleast I'm not able to turn it..I have a new starter but I'd like to know if your hack pertains to my symptoms?.it feels to me like the motor is stuck.the car was driven 9 months ago I have trouble thinking it could've locked up in that short time...anyone have any ideas??
Can you plz come fix my Saab 2003 9.2 😂 It cut out for no reason at all when hot then won’t crank back over. Then it cools down and will start 2 hours later ! Have no idea what the go is ! Don’t have the money to get it looked at !
Just happened to me now, started fine went down the road on a school run and then bang the engine cut-out. Now the key won't come out of the ignition barrel and car won't start either.
I've got a 93, starts but the gages on the dash switch off and head lights go into disco mode, any suggestions please?
Shout out to the old school Nokia phone!!!!
What are the odds???
Fairly high, this is becoming more common
Having similar issue.steering lock malfunction error ,key turns, but car wont start..any idea?
First step, clean the ISM, they get dirty inside and gum up.
Also try resynching the key ua-cam.com/users/shortsgmbsA5Co2oE
