      is this in part a result of the pact of forgetting that was sined after Franco's death and whiped the slate clean so to speek in regards to crimes commuted during the civil war. as to mention the crimes of one side would open up the floor to talking about the crimes of the other ?

      @Bitter Pineapple I hope you don’t take this video and the book he is referencing at face value.
      His portrayal is a mass distortion and web of skewered lies.
      The history of Spain in the first half of the 20th century has everything to do with the history of Europe in the first half of the 20th century.
      If you like, I can recommend things for you. If you’re not interested, that’s fine too. I do hope you look at information presented though with a more critical eye. Even if it’s being presented as “history”.

    Someone further down in the comments recommended Murray Bookchin's book (The Spanish Anarchists, the Heroic Years). I'd just like to say that I've read it myself and recommend it also. Bookchin was involved, I believe, in efforts to support anarchist veterans of the civil war/exiles from Spain and met people involved in what happened. He gives a good, detailed account of events. Apparently, The Spanish Cockpit is another good book about the revolution/civil war. It was written by a neutral observer who documented the achievements of the anarchist collectives.

    Id love to hear your thoughts on "worker councils" by anton pannekoek, a marxist and council communist. he expands on the ideas of delegates and worker councils that anarchists commonly propose. he also goes in depth to the development how bourgeoisie within different regions such as europe, america, asia, etc. and how they developed differently and uniquely.

    Not all priests were supporters of the nationalist their were some who agreed with the republicans. But also the republicans were not exactly innocent they still commited mass atrocities, such as the red terror. As much as i like the way the anarchists in spain organized they by no means were saints.

      @@vincentmcnabb939 Catholic terminology is an aspect of western popular culture, even communists and anarchists use them. The issue isn't in the words themselves, it's the way it's used. For example, sin, in a secular sense, refers to just immoral behaviour in general, whereas sin in Catholicism refers to any form of disobedience to the Roman Catholic Church and its Canon law. Of course, oftentimes the things that isn't sinful in the secular sense is sinful in the Catholic sense (ie. missing mass, being an atheist, using birth control, masturbation, divorce, sex before marriage, homosexuality, or reporting cases of child sex abuse by clergy) and vice versa (ie. homophobia, misogyny, anti-Semitism, fascism, or killing of left-wing political dissidents).

    • @vincentmcnabb939
      @vincentmcnabb939 4 місяці тому

      @@sciencesociety2919 There is an issue with the words themselves as they become a parody and distortion when they have obviously been derived from the Church. Some, such as Dostoevesky, would even claim that Communism and Socialism are secular heresies emanating form the Catholic Church; I would disagree with him but only to an extent; their use of Catholic words and terms shows a clear influence, for a start. Yes, such terms are now part of popular culture but only because that culture is birthed and cradled by the Church even in its opposition.
      Sin in the Catholic Church is very seldom a breach of Canon Law which rather relates to the governance of the Church. Sin is disobedience to God, albeit as often defined through the Church through the lens of Scripture and Tradition. Divorce is not a sin but remarriage is. Homosexual inclination is not a sin but homosexual acts are. Homophobia in most occasions is a sin; and certainly not a virtue. Reporting of child abuse is certainly not a sin; breaking the seal of the Confessional is a strict prohibition under Canon Law, though. Anti-semitism is a sin; killing of people solely due to their political allegiances, etc., are all sins to the Church and certainly not virtues. Indeed, any unjust killing is a mortal sin.
      You destroy a salient point with hyperbole and such scurrilous claims.

    Out of curiosity, what do you have to say about the role the Catholic church played in much of Latin America in opposing various US backed far right regimes? I'll be the first to agree that the church has headed many absolutely terrible things, but there's also a long tradition of Catholic leftists that I feel is often overlooked by some people (Not that I think you are here, that's not what this video is about).

      JebediahMD as one of these supposed catholic leftists myself, I would say we did some good, but unfortunately many of our leaders supported the various dictatorships. Don’t get me wrong, I think we did a lot of good, but real change was never able to come because of the connections with the state (and the companies that propped them up). If you are less cynical, you could say that, as many of these countries were killing members of the clergy that opposed them, the Church didn’t want to lose more of its members and as such was silent on the atrocities committed.

    Although the church certainly wasn’t a good institution, I think it’s important that we remember many anti-theist acts were horrific and unjustified. We must be careful that we, as anarchists, do not fall into the trap of historical revisionism and justification of atrocities.
    It’s also worth mentioning that, although many took part in them, some anarchists of the time viewed the measures as too extreme and took action to stop them. These are, in my opinion, the ones we should hold in high regard (at least relative to this issue).
    Should the churches have been burnt? Ehhh, perhaps. Should priests have been killed? Only if it could be proven at trial that they were conspiring to help the Nationalists (it is true that many were), and even then imprisonment is preferable to execution.
    Should priests have been tortured? NO, and we must not waver on this.

    This is an absolutely disgusting distortion and package of lies.
    I hope any reasonable, critically minded person who may come across this video has the common sense to simply not take this at face value.
    Propaganda is a powerful tool.
    A message, a narrative, is drilled into the public’s minds on all fronts.
    Be it through the book this person is discussing, or a big budget fantasy movie like Pan’s Labyrinth.
    As magical and creative a film as that is, it is also infused with a heavy element of propaganda.
    The propaganda is in full effect, non stop from day one. It is reinforced in all aspects of culture, then goes down as “history”.
    Much of the true nature of history in the first half of the 20th century has been suppressed or inverted.
    If one is familiar with the term
    “Useful idiot” these propagandized fools who do their part in mass deception.
    Any critically minded person might ask, why is a particular narrative being fed and pushed.
    Use your common sense, look deeper, and the truth will reveal itself.

  • @jasonkillbourn
    @jasonkillbourn 5 років тому +18

    An all too common mistake made by right wing and liberal commentators on the Spanish Civil War, is to simply claim that both sides committed atrocities and, as such, were as bad as each other. In the case of the anarchists burning churches and killing members of the clergy, these were all isolated incidents, carried out by people on the ground, with no hierarchical chain of command behind them. The victims of these acts were generally people who were well known to those exacting vengeance, and you have to appreciate the appalling repression and inhumane persecution that had been visited on generations of anarchists in the decades running up to this (I'd recommend reading Murray Bookchin's excellent work "The Spanish Anarchists - The Heroic Years 1868 - 1936).
    The nationalists however committed atrocities on a far greater scale, which were more often than not of an indiscriminate nature and frequently sanctioned from above, sometimes from the highest levels of their power structure (one general ordered his troops to kill 10 locals for every nationalist found to have been killed in any newly conquered territory), and a blind eye was largely turned towards the raping and killing of women and children by Franco's troops, particularly his North African mercenaries, who were notorious for such things.
    In short, if you found yourself in town when the anarchists rolled in, unless you were known to have been a part of the repression of the local population, it would be unlikely that you and your family would have anything whatsoever to fear. The same could not be said if the nationalists arrived on your doorstep...

    • @smokyondagrass2353
      @smokyondagrass2353 4 роки тому +1

      From what I've been reading, the difference between nationalist atrocious and atrocities on the republican side is that the nationalist ordered these atrocities while on the Republican side they were committed by more ore less angry mobs that the Republicans actively tried to stop. Like one of the main jobs of the military information service was to like stop people from killing priests.

    • @jasonkillbourn
      @jasonkillbourn 4 роки тому +2

      @@smokyondagrass2353 Oh yes, mob reprisals against the church were quite common and not terribly desirable for the Republicans, on the PR front (sort of thing that gets people spluttering over their cornflakes at the breakfast table), though it should perhaps be pointed out that this was not restricted to the anarchists, and all factions fighting on the side of the republic experienced this problem. In fact it has been suggested that the liberals, who also had a serious grudge against the church, actually carried out more reprisals than their socialist comrades, but this didn't fit in with the narrative being put out by the international press, who preferred to just demonise the anarchists, though I have yet to see any statistics for that, so it might be interesting to look up...

    Hey i don't think this analysis is completly accurate, i don't think many people care much about the jews since there weren't many in spain, i think anticlericalism has been a feature of spanish society since maybe the time of the inquisition, and certainly since the ilustration, there always was a resentment to the church because of their great economical power in the popular classes, and since the liberals entered the political map in the 19th century there's been a division between liberals/republicans/anticlericals with monarchists/conservatives/clericals
    but as i said big part of the people in the lower and popular classes have always had a resentment towards the church without necesarily support any ideology, you can see that playing out in the killing of the friars in Madrid in 1834

Many of the ancient African Christians practiced an autonomous life style and rejected material and imperialism . The catholic church unfortunately came with all of that, even killed those ofnthat cloth that were actually resisting the evil that it espoused , people like Joan of Arch , Kimpa Vita of Congo and Oscar Romero were the greatest examples of that faith but were killed off by those of that faith that practiced imperialism and racism. @IRPH Dinero por nada as i say id highly recomend reading Stanly G Payn , Rodger Griffin and Robert Paxton for a more accurate view of what Fascism is i will say this however that Franco's cabinet only contaned with in it 2 falangist members and that Franco him self did not care for Falangists when they where alive but propogandised and lionised them when they where dead during the civil war see José Antonio Primo de Rivera for this phenomena further more Franco refused to get involved in the second world war witch did much to anger the Falangists many of whom volunteered ether in a military or intelligence capacity for the Axis powers. then again i think there is a distict lack of understanding as to what fascism is and is not and there is a tendency to label nationlist ragims as fascist even if they lack fundamental elements of fascism. though then again the brord brach of fascism differ so widely from country to country that the notion of a generic fascism is something schollers have stuggled with for decades as Italian fascism difers grately from German national Socalism witch differs from Spansh Falangism wich differs from Romanian legionary ideology and so on and so forth

      @IRPH Dinero por nada 'for the next decade and more the Franquist state was nominally taken, to be a "fascist regime". It is doubtful, however, that one can speak of a fascist regime unless it is dominated and constructed by generic or categorical fascists, and it was hardly the case with Fanquism. Core falangists, the camisas viejas (lit. "old shirts"),played only a small role in the new state and held only a small minority of positions in the new system.' Stanley G Payn, Fascism:comparison and definition p153 given Payn has spent several decades studying modern Spain and fascism producing a number of book length monographs on both topics which are well respected and highly prised in the Academic profession i would privalige his views over some Spanish ultra-rightists and indeed over Gorge Orwell who well he produced one of the best personal acounts of the civil war was prone as with most left wing volonteers at the time to lablying what he fought against as fascist with out teasing out the nuances between Carlism, Falangism and the various other ideas encompassed with in the FET de la JONS

      @@Tommy-5684 That's a non description. Only people who form or desire to form fascist organisations can be classified as fascist. This is circular reasoning.

      @@enfercesttout this is the problem with the brand of fascism through its over use since the end of world war 2 it has come to basicly mean whatever the user of the term wants it to mean and consiquently it has lost any meaning other then "bad" people dont or are not realy able to identify fascism as distinct from any other form of authorterian-nationalist rule and consiquently lable it all as fascist. in truth one could argue the only true fascists where the PNF due to the distinct national difrences between fascisms meaning that there are almost as many differences between fascism's as similarities.later in the same chapter Payne alsonotes 'Nonetheless, there was also strong antifascist opinion among various rightist and Catholic sectors of the regime.' he further notes that from 1942 the doctrine of caudillaje was not emphasised . Caudillaje was Fracos equivlent though more restrined form of Ducismo in Italy and Fuhrerprnzip in Germany. both allowing anti-fascist elements in the regime and emphasising the singular strong leader motif that is a core tenet of fascism isn't particularly Fascist all things considered

    As someone that's new to anarchist ideas as a whole would it be possible for you to do an explanation on Mutualism. All the information I find seems to be contradictory. I got ancaps saying its a form of socialism and ancomms saying its capitalist. Its fucking confusing.
