  • Six days away from the 2024 NHL Draft and the NHL off-season is picking up steam, with the Winnipeg Jets joining the fray this week with their hiring of Assistant Coaches.
Of course the big news of the day was the status of Jets 2022 1st rounder Rutger McGroarty as there was a bit of a Saturday AM news bombshell from Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts Podcast which was released today indicating McGroarty’s name has come up in trade conversations. And to be clear he said “That the Jets have discussed trading and other teams have discussed acquiring McGroarty’s rights” which shows it isn’t simply teams calling about the top prospect.
Join Drew Mindell, Dave Minuk & Ezra Ginsburg at 900am CT as they discuss the latest on the Jets & more!

This appears to be a player who’s NOT saying I don’t want to play in Winnipeg! What he’s saying is I don’t want to play for this organization as it’s currently constructed. And I suspect he just takes a look at perfett, laine, and heinola as evidence. If the jets screw this up it really shows how inept their draft and develop concept is.

Embarrassing. Jets can’t see the value of giving promising young players NHL minutes over journeyman. Heinola’s journey as a prime example. Rutger could easily be an impact player by game 82 if he’s allowed to play, but because he’s not better than a guy like Appleton by game 1, he won’t get the opportunity.

Exactly! Dinosaur logic being applied to the modern nhl. The fact is he will make mistakes and his skating isn’t up to snuff but the potential and not to mention the charisma, enthusiasm, and leadership is oozing from him!! This could be a colossal mistake. How can true north absolutely destroy a great relationship with a kid so fast and come back to us fans and say we are a draft and develop franchise when they have struggled mightily to develop anyone in the last number of years?

The jets should start drafting Canadian hockey players 😊

Great show boys! I think people are overvaluing Rutger. Most scouts have him as a third liner or 2nd at best. I dont believe he is our top prospect and he is not NHL ready. If Rutger thinks he is good enough, he should put in some work and show it. These American kids are getting out of hand. The jets need to rethink there drafting strategy and stop focusing on Americans. It is going to get worse.

Another example of how the Jets are behind the times. Like it or not players now are pushing their way into the lineup at a younger age. The Jets can continue to have a 1980's philosophy about this but it's only going to hurt their ability to acquire talent.
For example, if you are a young player and see what Chevy has done to Ville, that alone would make you wanna go elsewhere. How much money has Ville lost because of sitting in the minors since 2019? Millions. Player agents also probably hate the Jets because of this.

I haven't got through the whole pod yet but I think Carolina is asking for mcgroarty as part of a deal for Necas

Carolinas marketing team might be amongst the best in the league. Necas is not worth a Rutger McGroarty by himself, let alone as part of a package.

@@twill5626 players who are good now are worth more to teams trying to win the cup then a prospect

This whole McGroarty thing is rubbing me the wrong way. This is screams of entitlement. Why should the Jets have to guarantee him an NHL spot for him to sign? Pisses me off.

Because he's in the NCAA, and the rules give the players the edge in negotiating. If you're drafting a NCAA guy, you know what you're getting into.

Rutger does not want to play in winnipeg because its winnipeg. It has nothing to do with anything else. SHOCKER american born player not wanting to play in a market on most players no trade list. Trade him. Could probably get something good.
