Atarashii Gakko No Leaders (New School Leaders) was formed in 2015 by Asobisytem. Mizyu (the one with two ponytails) was already on their books as she was a back up dancer to Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and they brought in Rin, Kanon and Suzuka to join her. They do all their own choreography and also create dances for other groups. They have some of the most original choreography I've seen from an idol group. In fact they are almost an anti-idol group as their motto is "With individuality and freedom I'm going to stick out" and they sing about challenging themes and have appeared at Pride events and do some pretty avant garde art projects. In 2020/21 they joined 88rising to break into the US market and have had some success getting millions of YT views and have just completed their first N.American tour playing a small venues. They recently broke out on TikTok in Japan with Otona Blue which is quite an old song and this First Take version has given them some great publicity.
Otona Blue (Adult Blue, but there's a pun and the way Suzuka says it makes it also mean "acting like an adult") is about "teenage awakening" ie the awareness of desire in others and their own desire to grow up and experience adult emotions. AG wrote the lyrics themselves when they were younger and I think it's an honest expression of their feelings as they approached adulthood, which makes some people uncomfortable. But AG never shy away from difficult subjects. They actually cut out some of the more explicit "phallic" bits of the dance and introduced a mime of a flower opening with a surprised look. The lyrics also mention an "Amaryllis becoming a flower".
Suzuka is a very energetic front person and here is a video of them recently performing live in NYC.

The socks say “Japan Youth Representative”. Like everything they do, it’s a bit tongue in cheek.

They had a very successful US Tour this year. Loved Clam Chowder in a bread bowl on the Wharf.

    "Kosei ya Jiyuu de Hamidashiteiku".
("With individuality and freedom, I'm gonna stick out".)
Atarashii Gakkou no Leaders (New School Leaders) began in 2015.
They've been known internationally as "ATARASHII GAKKO!" (New School) since they signed with 88rising in early 2021.
That's when I first started hearing about them.
The single for 'NAINAINAI' was their worldwide debut.
They are Suzuka, Kanon, Rin and Mizyu.
Many of their older songs have a Jazz fusion feel, especially the tracks created with H ZETTRIO.
There's been more of a Hip-Hop influence on some of the more recent songs.
Their EP, 'SNACKTIME' was produced by Money Mark, best known for his work with The Beastie Boys.
You should definitely check out 'Pineapple Kryptonite', one of the singles from that EP.
Although Suzuka is the main (lead) singer, they do have songs featuring the other members singing lead.

I didn't know Passio listened to them as well. We're listening to way too many of the same bands/artists 😶
Need to admit that I wasn't too happy with their return to pop/electronic music once they signed to 88⬆. Suzuna's voice is fantastic for Rock, Jazz and Blues. But I'm glad that (most of) their lyrics are still great, especially on "Maningen". So looking at their entire carrier so far it seems like more of a natural, growing process and nothing they did solely for becoming more mainstream.
Still took me some time to fall in love with their new music but as long as they are having fun with it, it's great to see so many people discovering them through this sound.
Would be great to see you react to something from their first two albums, though. "Koi geba" was a pretty popular release from that era and it also has a video, I would recommend that one:

Btw I always forget that you Americans say theatER to cinema. Thanks for reminding me of that linguistic atrocity (I'm working in theatre) 😂

@@smittycal 😆It's a me problem. When I hear theatre I'm thinking of live performances/my first love. Sometimes of operating theatres. Never of the cinema. Although I suppose it makes a certain amount of sense it just feels terribly wrong to me. Made me physically shudder when you said it 😅
I've been loving the reaction, though!

      @@therose6901 no… your not that problem 😂
It’s definitely an American thing, and honestly growing up as a theater kid I know better 😂
      But thank you for watching.
      More to come hah.
