Shame the fifth game was a bit screwy officiating-wise because that was going to be an all-time classic. Gohar was playing like it was the last tournament of her life.

@@Moose92411 When the interference is just prior and pushes your body in such a way that a reasonable swing is no longer possible, you absolutely have the right to ask for a let, especially when your opponent did not make every effort (or even minimal effort) to clear. The most important thing is always the fair outcome of a point. Sherbini was on the ball, she actually had an advantage in the rally if allowed to reach the ball without obstruction, and Gohar's clearance was not 'every effort" and no doubt made it impossible for Sherbini to have a fair hit at the ball. Calling that "no let" just re-inforces player's instincts to not go out of their way to fully clear because they benefit from it.

I'm now convinced that the video referees have agreed to almost always agree with the central ref. That final decision is an absolute shocker. No Let? It's a stroke all day long. Gohar stands square and shuts off the line to the ball.

Look at the last replay. That looks like a winning shot. It was glued to the wall. The first question to ask in let decisions is if the person asking for the let could have gotten the ball had there been no interference.

Watched the last game in full and surprised commentators didn’t comment more on how bad the refereeing was. Men’s final Jason Foster was fantastic, maybe 2-3 missed calls ENTIRE match! The last game in women’s final virtually every decision was wrong with 0 consistency from previous games. This ref, whoever she is, is awful in almost every match I see of her. Just glad they didn’t put her in the important men’s matches during British open.

Not a huge Gohar fan but these highlights suggested a decent amount of variation in her game which was good - especially taking it in short rather than just harder drives to the back. Good on her.

Here's part of a comment I made to someone else who was saying that different people can interpret the rules differently...
"What I've done is explain the related rule, and based on what the rule states, why the call was a poor call.
Gohar bounced (this is a hindrance in squash) ElSherbini off her movement line to the ball.
    The video clearly shows this.
So now it becomes a matter of judgment regarding how much of an interference this hindrance (being bounced off her movement line) was.
1... It can be considered negligible interference, at which point it is not a consideration impacting the ref call.
2... It can be considered significant interference, at which point it is considered as impacting the ref call.
3... It can be considered an obstruction, at which point it is considered as the primary influence on the ref's call.
4... It can be considered a deliberate obstruction, at which point it is considered as something that both influences the ref's call and any additional warning/penalty the ref deems fit to apply.
If you look at the play sequence 8:32-35 you'll see that Gohar, after playing her drop (which was not a good drop as it came back into the court a few feet and bounced high) immediately stepped back directly into ElSherbini's line to the ball.
Gohar should have stepped to her left, not backward... This alone is cause for an immediate let call as her doing so immediately obstructed ElSherbini from having unhindered direct access to the ball, as well as space to complete a swing at the ball (as per related rule).
After a player has hit their shot, they should not make a move that becomes a hindrance/obstruction to their opponent who is now the hitter.
And this happened before ElSherbini was even in a position to attempt a shot.
Seriously, go take a look at it... Gohar stepping back into ElSherbini's line is clear as day.
Additionally... The non-hitter should not influence (Gohar) - by their movement - where and when the hitter (ElSherbini) can hit the ball.
If you look closely at the movement of the ball you will see that it is quite a distance off the side wall, and Gohar's backward movement hindered ElSherbini from going to take her shot earlier when the ball was not close to or against the wall.
Finally... There is substantial physical contact between the hips of both players just before ElSherbini would have made her shot.
If ElSherbini had deliberately caused this contact then it would be against her... But she didn't, it was Gohar's backward movement that caused the contact... As ElSherbini should have had a clear line to the ball.
Ask yourself... Why didn't Gohar move away from the line of the ball, which would have been to her left?
Having played competitive squash for years, I can suggest that Gohar didn't properly clear because doing so would have given ElSherbini the room to take the ball earlier, and in space (not close to the wall), which would have left Gohar in an awkward position, should ElSherbini have driven the ball either down the line. Gohar, had she moved to her left to clear the line to the ball, would have been in a poor position to recover a line drive by ElSherbini.
But what I think may have been Gohar's reason should not come into my consideration as a ref... Everything about this play clearly leans toward a let call at best against Gohar... And possibly even a stroke against her because of her poor movement backward, which caused the contact between the hips of both players that forced ElSherbini off her line.
Now the commentator suggested that ElSherbini looked to have gone through the interference, but anyone who plays the game at a competitive level knows that it is pretty much impossible to stop your intended movement on a dime... And if you look at ElSherbini's racquet preparation it is obvious that she had already decided not to execute a shot, but instead stop and ask for a let."
    Hope the above helps.
