I was asked to re-create the White album 4 or 5 months in advance and agreed. Now, I had never heard the album, so my thoughts were "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" and whatnot. 2 weeks before the first of only 3 short rehearsals I thought I should give it a listen. First thought: "Oh, it's a double album, ok". Listened to the whole thing once, then immediately called the bandleader. "Ummm, hey man, just listened to the album. Am I allowed to have notes onstage for the performances!?". He laughed and said "OF COURSE! The whole backing band will have notes or charts except the 20 different singers!". Whew! I wrote my notes in English interspersed with the myriad of shots in rhythmic notation. I worked REALLY hard at memorizing the whole thing over those weeks.
Some huge Beatles fans and musicians in the audience came to me after the first performance in Hamilton, and someone said "You do realize that whole performance was a showcase for you? Hey, do you want a weekly studio gig every Wednesday?". Why, yes I do! :)
