The song criticizes three things: 1. People who are willing to commit violent crime just to be noticed 2. The media who profits off these people by providing them with international recognition 3. The public who glorifies, justifies, and rewards the first’s actions by falsely remembering them a “heroes” At the beginning we see the band being led off the bus in chains, then we get the whole part where they break into a government building, killing a bunch of the guards and some journalists while one of them is strapped with a bomb, waiting for the right signal. After they’re done they come out of the building and are greeted with mobs of police, news people, and civilians when a fight breaks out as they are all separated and thrown to the ground by police. There’s some tension among everyone which is broken when the final guy, who the police didn’t know about, who’s still in the building gets the signal and blows himself up. The video ends with the surviving members all standing at a podium, still in chains, receiving a literal reward for what they did as they all cheer and a large memorial photo of the guy who blew himself up hangs behind them. This is one of my favorite music videos from them because there’s a lot of subtle things going on.
For me, "Ich Will" is a criticism of the media. There have been cases in Germany in which reporters gave criminals the platform to pay the greatest possible attention. In addition, it is always a highlight for Rammstein when the audience interacts live. You can read the wikipedia article about Gladbeck hostage crisis with Dieter Degowski and Hans-Jürgen-Rösner .

"it is always a highlight for Rammstein when the audience interacts live" Yep, I got to experience this in live a concert. 15 or so years ago I were in my first ever Rammstein concert. It was in Helsinki, Finland, in a hockey arena. Got my place 10 meter front and 40 meters left of the stage, the PERFECT spot. I was there, with my friend, shirtless (guys, both), having the best time of our lives. We did full body bows, bed from the waist, hands streched out to them and I spotted Till Lindemann seeing us, he walked to a technician, pointed at us while talking to him. 2 seconds later there were a spotlight on us. The. Best. Time. Of. My Life. (at that point).
for me it feels like they kinda depict their interaction with the media and their fans (and maybe how it feels to perform with stagefright). They want to be seen but it also pressures them to behave in certain ways. If i remember right Till also talked about the issue of not being understood when singing in front of non german audience.
It’s good to see that you now read and analyze the lyrics, you get so much more out of any rammstein song that way. It’s a pleasure to see your reactions.
One of the best songs when you in the middle of 70000 people and interact with Till and the band! Seen them so many times live now, but "Ich Will" is one of my absolut favorit songs live. Whether you like Rammstein or not you cannot deny their videos are quite a thing(s). They are pretty memoriable (if there is such a word) and kinda disturbing. Put you in a mood or thoughts you normally wouldn't be in.
I would say, there are three things here that Rammstein are criticizing with this song. On the one hand, they are criticizing people who attract public attention by purposely creating scandals. I think, everyone knows certain politicians, for instance, who do this to keep their names in the headlines. Another example are recent terrorist attacks, where terrorists have been live-streaming their attacks on the internet to gain a stage for their messages. What's interesting is that this has only really become a huge issue after Rammstein made this music video. So you could pretty much say they already saw what's coming back then. On the other hand, they are criticizing the media, which, in their hunt for new big headlines, provides a stage for those people. Following the approach "The more drama, the better", the media allows terrorists and populists to broadcast their messages. In the music video, you see one of the bank robbers holding a golden camera, which is a movie award in Germany, similar to the Oscars. It's a symbolic thank you from the media for providing such a great show. Thirdly, I think, Rammstein are also criticizing society as a whole for blindly believing anything that populists are spreading through the media, but also for taking delight in drama and misery. Rammstein most likely saw the trend of us becoming a more and more populist society, where only those are heard who scream the loudest and who provide the most outrageous ideas.
With the "terrorist part" I disagree, because the Gladback hostage happened back in 1988 and yes the media gave them a platform. Here is the link in English: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gladbeck_hostage_crisis And yes, they also criticise, that too many are believing everything mainstream media is giving us and this was back in 2001! It is also said that the part "ich verstehe Euch nicht" has also to do with the fans. They only do what they like to do, but don't really understand this hype!
The Gladbeck crisis is indeed a prime example, and I didn't mean to say that these problems didn't exist before Rammstein made the song. But it has become a much greater issue in recent years, in Germany perhaps less than in other parts of the world. However, through the internet the problems are now spreading on a global scale, and people are happy to take what they read there for granted, if they like it better than what they hear from proper journalists.
@@RayvenGuard Which "proper journalists"? These ones, who say the things the government is giving them? Did you see and heard what happened in Austrian, why Kurz is not chancellor anymore? Have a look at it and tell me again, it is only Putin in Russia who does this. So enough of politicians here, I don't like to bring it on those channels. And yes it is a problem, but it only can be this problem, because people are viewing it. If nobody what click on it or watch less somewhere else, it would be the best. Me for eg, I don't have a TV since the last one broke and this was 7 years ago. I don't have to look this "mainstream sh...", what many others do. I know that this an that is out there and this is enough for me, for all because I know how those "real TV shows" are created as a filmmaker myself. It is indeed a Matrix we live in, but the most don't get it at all. Sorry, I was never into "Mainstream sh..., and I will never be into Mainstream sh.... Good night.
@@andreagruber5813 Proper journalists are the ones who will give you all the facts you need to build your own opinion, without leaving things out, dramatizing, or trying to force their opinion on you. And yes, there is mainstream media that will not provide decent journalism, but there are also those who do. So, just saying that all mainstream media is bad doesn't really work out. It does, however, depend on the country you live in. You don't need a TV either nowadays, that's true. I don't even remember when I last turned mine on myself. Comparing what happened with Kurz in Austria to Putin in Russia is a bit far-fetched, but yes, politicians are humans, and some of them will try to abuse the system, no matter where they are. Luckily, Austria is not Russia and has a working justice system. So everyone now knows what Kurz is being accused of, and voters can either remember it or forget about it, as they do too often.
@@RayvenGuard Oh dear, you have no idea have you? Kurz is still working from behind the scene and the new one said already that he is very happy to work together with him. So I think, the world does again only know, what some wants to let them know. And that all his friends got very good jobs is not like in Russia. Of course. Go ahead and continue to live how ever you want, because I can see you have not even a little clue about the Austrian system and that even some statistics showed already about two years ago that it has the same corruption level as Russia! But that is OK, I also don't know everything about other countries, but please, let it be now. You do not have to educate me. Thanks and good night. This is my last reply, so do not waste more of your time.
Hope you're doing well brother. This was the first Rammstein songs I heard by them. Loved them ever since that song dude. They're ace. Check out Zwitter man, it's amazing. When is your next live?
For me, the video is about perceived control. The police think that they have matters under control, the media think that they do as well. The media believe that the band lives or dies by the coverage that is given to them and the nature of the coverage. What in fact is the case though is that Rammstein are in complete control of the entire situation-they control the bank but have no interest in the money there; the police can't take shots at them when they leave by the front door because the attention of the press surrounding the band makes that impossible; Flake controls the moment of his own death and his future reputation as a martyr; the press inside the bank are dead so controlled by the band and the press outside are controlled by the band with their agreement that they see, hear and feel the band. Even the attempt by the press to kill off the band's reputation fails as the coverage ensures that the surviving members receive an award. The song , for me is the dichotomy (wow, listen to me 😌) of wanting success yet not understanding or accepting the effects of the success. We want you do hear us, see us, sing along with us, cheer at us, but we don't understand why you would do this and not to the extent that you do
