Hi mike, love your vids, you can try 2 or 3 Belleville spring washer 8mm placed on the head of your bolt 11:37. The spring washer may help to decrease the chocs on the bolt head. When the head touch the ground, and follow the ground, you have a gap between the bolt head and the cylinder, when you raise the cutting head or you have a gofer hole, that gap will decrease quickly and you snap the bolt head

That weatherproof door gasket back there looks like its better designed than the suspension bolts for the cutter bar!
Get some U-bolts and some hard rubber axle buffers, rack it around those two bars and adjust as needed. Someone who was probably literally in the bathroom for 95% of their paycheck decided those bolts could take 7x the force they're rated for.

We started picking corn Sunday with the two X9 1100. Once we got everything dialed in and had the rental trucks there we decided to really let them eat. We were averaging just over 14,000 bushels an hour. You spend 2 million just on x9,probably 3 million on the other combines, build a runway and all that bins and dryer. There is something you don’t tell people or in Canada you get even more than U.S farmers from the Government. No business operation can do that!!!

I think, the screw head becomes a point load from the two points it sits on the round bolt, event worse true the large chamfer, as it brings the load more away from the core and enlarged the lever.
So it becomes cracks and breaks off, I would assume, that a soft washer (maybe a copper or alu seal) could help, as it distributes and dampens the load.
(The second one maybe breaks on the thread due overload from the missing first one.)

Maybe you should buy a box of one higher grade 3rd party bolts and upgrade them whenever they break. But maybe wait to say you did so on UA-cam until the John Deere warranty expires. 😜
So if they are typical metric class 8.8, upgrade to class 10.9, and if that still isn't enough upgrade to class 12.9
I looks like you could use an M12 Milwaukee battery powered ratchet with that little space to move a manual ratchet.

From my experience a grade 5 bolt will outlast a grade 8 bolt. Bolt strength is end to end and may be to brittle as there be some side to side motion. Put one in vice and hammer on it , the higher grade will break the lower grade will bend.

I think I'd be tempted to run dual tires out on the far ends of the headers, on one each side of the bracket. That should cover gopher holes easier, and less bounce. But possibly be a bit harder on tire skid. Given the way the axles mount it should be easy enough to switch to duals. Mill two axles to thread together with a set screw to lock the threads.

The person stating that you shouldnt put a flat head screw through a round pin might be onto something. If the screws break right under the head, maybe they can hold a little more if you place one or two washers under the screwhead.
Edit: Beveled out doesnt really make things better strain wise. The load rating on screws is only valid if they use the full contactpatch under the head, by putting them through a round bolt and beveling the hole out you remove most of the contact patch under the screw and create stress concentrations in the bolthead.

I feel like if you modified for larger bolts you are then going to end up with thinner sidewalls on the barrels, breaking those instead. Definitely feels like something an engineer ran a computer simulation and decided a M8 bolt would be plenty good.

Jumping one bolt size especially if you can switch to a standard bolt you can get something a little bigger instead of a full jump

So Mike, are you considering replacing the John Deere header for a Honeybee header?

I wonder if you could machine the lugs that receive the bolt to a larger size and then use over size bolts. Bearing in mind that the larger and stronger the bolt up to a point, could cause the lugs to fail with the same stresses. Correct torque for those bolts?

I don’t think you can modify the machine like that. John Deere is real funny about that stuff and warrantees/leases.

You are very correct. John Deere is definitely in the 'wrong to repair' camp.

Would high tensile bolts work better for the header table? Seems like a flawed design with small diameter bolts that appear to shear often.

My years of battling mechanical issues when bolts are a problem if they gave the thread lengths accordingly--switch to Caterpillar bolts. Problem will be solved
