this chemical reaction thing that you mention it happens with many new nibs..Because from the manufacture they are covered with a protection liquid..All you need to do is just once burn it with a lighter couple of seconds or wash it with little alcohol..some people use their own spits too lol..This is how Mangaka's clean factory protection of every new nib.. hope it helps you..:)

Loving these Rich. Throwing out an idea...I love to ink my own sketches/drawings. I think you inking a sketch of yours would really attract an audience. I know in the past you mentioned it being a pain in the ass but mayb over a sketch that’s not so important...?? I’d love seeing your process & I’m sure plenty of others would too. NOT SAYING WHAT UR DOING NOW ISN’T GOOD ENOUGH!! Haha, cheers bud. Keep these coming!!

I noticed the same thing with the boxes of Hunt 102s too! Never seen anyone talk about it. They were not just misshapen or warped, but often much more flimsy. It'd be common to have one or two snap per box within the first couple minutes of inking a page.

I honestly appreciate you doing these videos. There's a ton of videos out there showing people inking but not many going into the actual process of inking. Looking forward to more of these!

thank you...these are fun and interesting even for me to check out...the learning curve is pretty huge. I need editing software...pretty sure I have some on an older external hard drive...so I am going to look for that tonight so I can edit these a bit and have slightly better production. :)

Just tried these! These 102 are horrible to clean... But the biggest problem i have a lot of the time it won't give ink when throwing lines. Is there an angle i should use?

When the fibers catch the nib it's pain city! What sort of paper did you guys (and girl) used back at Wildstorm? The inking was so slick, I don't think doing that style of inking with this paper would be as clean and slick if at all possible, specially what Alex Garner was doing with Campbell on Danger Girl.

we used a 3 ply bristol board back then. The rub is...because of environmental waste issues...ALL paper at least made in the US changed the way it was made probably 15 years back...that said. I still have about 100 sheets of the good paper here that I am using for a personal project...I had to save it for this job because I need the great stuff. Really glad you are saying this because you truly don't understand the FRUSTRATION I feel when I scan my art now...it's so depressing seeing the crap paper and all it's flaws at 600 dpi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

we called that old Image board "bullet proof"...I just remembered that. It was interesting because as the great paper source started to dry up...you could real feel the "stress" mount with artists at the studio when new paper came in..."was this the good stuff? " artists would kind of rush over and hoard paper....ultimately the good stuff stopped coming./

Richard Friend what is a good paper nowadays for the 102? EVERYTHING I’ve tried has ultimately led to the brush being my go to. Sucks because u can get some really neat effects with a nib...😡

A lot of artists recommend and use the Semi-Smooth pads, I've never used them so I don't know how they are for inking.

aquadias I ordered a pad of the Fabriano paper. 14"x17" that I can trim down. I'll do a paper review when it arrives.

Everytime I use a new nib, it either doesnt hold the ink or it doesnt put down ink. Is there something I'm missing?

NeffJeff95 look at the reaction of Zehra T. In the comments. There is some oily protection on the nibs. You need to clean that off.
