Such mature, technical music created and performed by very young men. Keyboardist Keith Emerson was 26. bass/guitar/vocalist Greg Lake was 23 and drummer Carl Palmer was just 20 years old.

@@stevenmccart8502 And in Crimson Lake had only just recently learned to play the bass. In his autobiography "Lucky Man" he gives a very funny retelling of how he was asked to play the bass, figured it shouldn't be too hard, and then instantly had Michael Giles yelling at him, "What in the hell are you doing?" Apparently, Lake knew NOTHING about what he was supposed to be doing with the instrument.
Lake is one of my favorite bass players!

Some facts most do not know - it took 5 days to record the album and they could not play it all the way through when it was recorded. The genius recording engineer - Eddie Offord added his magic and sewed the parts together. The group learned to play it live before they toured and featured Tarkus.

This is a three man band! What a sound, what complexity, how many transitions, time and theme changes. They did more in the first few minutes then most bands did in their entire careers. Amazing a unique album when release 50 years ago! ELP were great all such amazing musicians. Emerson on keys was the best ever the speed and complexity incredible, Palmer on drums my god what he did is amazing (listen for his drumming that sounds like tank tracks rolling) and Lake on guitar and vocals a true master. A three man band, who can do that in 2021? Great reaction, looks like you are hooked on Prog! Thanks so much for helping celebrating Tarkus's 50th. @@MarcusL1995 Rush? Really. No doubt they are good, but Keith Emerson is a composer. Highly complex music. No Doubt Rush could play this, and I have heard all of Rush and understand they have albums with great composing, and musicianship, but please go look at live footage of Keith in early 70s. He is surrounded by 4 sides of 3 stacks of keyboards, organs, pianos. He plays them effortlessly, switching back and forth from and side at any anytime. No one, mean no one had that talent in our lifetime. It wasn't even close. Just my opinion.

I first heard this album about 1974 when I was thirteen. I've been a prog-rocker since. There was never quite another era in music like the prog-rock of the seventies. ELP, Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Gentle Giant, Van Der Graaf Generator...the list goes on. Music so good that it STILL rocks people to the core. Fifty years later.

I'm with you. From '65 onward I did anything I could to get concert tickets to all those you mentioned and many more. What a rich time it was. The talent oozed from everywhere. My life revolved around the music of the day and fed me well. Most of them stand up today after all these years. And that's because of the quality and genuine creative talent - individually, and collectively. I'm afraid I find it lacking today, with a few strong exceptions.

You should read up on the what the story of Tarkus is… an armadillo tank, born from an egg during an erupting volcano and all the other war-like creatures he encounters and defeats. Until he battles with Manticore and loses. His body is laid by a river, gets absorbed into the water and morphs into Aquatarkus. It’s complicated. Even Carl says today that he never understood the concept, haha.

Armadillo/tank on that cover. The music…. Something else entirely, eh? A lot of minds were opened back in the 60’s and 70’s. Awesome music was just one of the effects.

Yo Pope, brother. I grew up listening to this stuff since I was 5 years old. Im 24 now, and have a moderately successful beatmaking gig. I credit my influences to be Jean Luc Ponty, who by the way, is my FAVORITE artist of all time, Keith Emerson and Greg Lake and of course Carl Palmer. Frank Zappa, Jimi Hendrix, even robin trower. George Duke, roy ayers, genesis. Cant forget icytwat, because the trap influence. The list goes on forever bro. Thank you so much for just being who you are and accepting this music the way it was intended to be perceived. I hate to bring race into this. But imagine being 8 years old then 12 then 17 as a half white half black dude trying to show people this stuff. They thought i was tryna be cray. For any older person reading this, if youre wondering why they would think im crazy...its because a lot and i mean almost all people my age/Popes age do NOT understand nor do they want to understand this music. Im pouring my soul into this now lol imma stop. But man your reactions are so genuine and remind me of how i felt when i first listened to these artists. Rock on bro!

For me, the neatest trick in all this is in "Battlefield", which has such a mournful tone throughout, but then a military triumphant motif kicks in every now and again. It's like a discussion or debate: "but we won!" / "but look at how many suffered and died". That triumphant motif starts sounding very hollow.

This is why I watch reaction. It's like you show your buddy your record collection. (This was what it was like in the seventies.) You hear more of what you thought you knew. Like the last melody. That haunted my subconscious for decades. And all the rest I had forgotten!!

In love with drumming after playing as percussion in my hight school band learning notes from piano and guitar... Listening to this now I can get. And hear every note and beat and love it my favorite song from them was Knife Edge

22:20 "how did they do this back in the 70s"? Bearing in mind that they took this music on the road and still with only three of them, no midi, no computers: sheer talent and professionalism! Glad to see that someone a third of my age likes it! Watch their live performances on video and you'll be even more blown away by the talent

ELP had trouble taking their shows live. Believe it or not, Brain Salad Surgery was designed from its inception to be a live show, without an orchestra or clumsy overdubs. Don't ask me how the music became even more complex. The funniest thing is seeing video of Greg Lake chew gum, while singing "Still, You Turn Me On."

That's actually an armadillo (ant-eater) "hybridized" with a tank on the cover. Armadillos are not rodents, they're somewhat distantly related to sloths. And yes, "Tarkus" is an absolute timeless classic that was a big part of this old man's teenage years. Unlike me, it hasn't aged a day!
