- Part 5: Walk with us on the Camino Frances as we leave León and the Meseta and enter the green hills of Galicia. We visit the towns of Hospital de Órbigo, Astorga, Foncebadon, El Acebo, Ponferrada, and Villafranca del Bierzo, and end in Samos with it's historical monastery. This chapter is all about milestones! We visit the Cruz de Ferro (Iron Cross) and conquer the climb up O Cebreiro.
We started our walk on August 7, 2023 in Le Puy-en-Velay. After spending 28 days walking in France, we arrived at Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port on September 3rd. From there, we continued on the Camino Frances, arriving in Santiago de Compostela on September 29, 2023.

This is Lainey's second time walking the Camino Frances and Shawn's 4th. We hiked the Via Podiensis, Camino Primitivo, and Camino de Invierno in 2023, the Camino del Norte in 2019, and the Camino Frances in 2017. We packed ultralight bags for all of our journeys.

Crossing into Galicia is always my favorite part of any Camino.
Y’all seem like so much fun to walk with.
Thanks so much.
The Galicia crossing is magic!!
From heat wave to shivering! You're getting all the weather! I think I would prefer the cold than the heat.
We really did get all of it! I (Lainey) definitely prefer cold over heat, too!
Sois una pareja encantadora! Como siempre, disfruto mucho viendo vuestros vídeos. Buen camino!
Muchas gracias!
Your films are so well paced and peaceful... love you guys!
Thank you so much!
It as pouring rain the day we walked up to O’Cebreiro that made the road/path incredibly muddy. Was an adventure to say the least. Thanks for sharing your video; until next time
Wow, that's a crazy memory! It's amazing how a day can feel so different based on the weather. Buen Camino!
Thank you for these videos where you introduce the north of Spain, a less touristy area but with your videos little by little it will become better known, responsible tourism and far from the massification of the south and the Spanish Mediterraneo.👋👋👋👍
Thanks for your kind words and for watching. We love Northern Spain. It's our favorite area of the country.
Thanks for your great videos. This year I did Le Puy to St Jean in 5 weeks and wished I could have walked on.... Miki Goldie
Oh wow! That's still a lovely trek and a huge feat!
Wow your videos make me so happy, Going in a month and when I can be this happy too its gonna be great!
Hahaha thanks! This comment made us super happy. You’ll do great out there! 😁
Love the videos. I am doing the portugese at the end of April. Going from Porto to SDC. Keep on walking and posting videos. Buen Camino
Thanks so much. Buen Camino!
Besitos! You two are the cutest. I bought my first USWE pack based on your reviews and love it for my regular Sierra hikes. Make sure you get a cut! 😊
Thank you so much! Glad you love the USWE bag, too. We're finally affiliates with them, so we'll get cuts from future purchases through our links. Their gear is so high quality.
Shoot! I should have waited a few days. 😊@@DaysWeSpend
@@bearisland55 No worries!
Thank you for answering my question. I thought it may have been something to do with hearing impairment but wasn’t sure. It is good to know.
Merry Christmas
You're welcome! Merry Christmas!
Surely they sell pants and gloves in spain so you can be warmer! Your friend has a nice puffy jacket on. Hey - with all those coins, you could punch a tiny hole and make a necklace! I look forward to your videos coming out. If I ever get to do a camino, I want to choose the routes with the most nature, no matter the length or climb.
Thanks so much!
Spain does sell them, but it was only cold for a few days and I didn't want to purchase anything. Plus, after walking for about 10 minutes, I warmed up enough. :)
Good idea for the smashed coins! I've been collecting them since I was a kid, so I have tons of them.
We think the route with the most nature is the Primitivo or the Via Podiensis. (at least of the ones that we've walked).
-Lainey
@@DaysWeSpend I bought a pair of fleece gloves at Decathlon for €3, they weigh less than an ounce and I'm still using them over a thousand miles of hiking later.
@@Andy-Mesa That's great you've gotten so much use out of them!
En el minuto 12:36 entráis en Galicia. Un país del Estado español con cultura e idioma propio. Su geografía, naturaleza y paisaje es distinto a la España de los tópicos. Benvidos á Galiza, Days We Spend.
Muchas gracias. Nos encanta Galicia!
Really enjoying your video of your experience on the Maseta. There is one thing though I am really curious about. What is the sign/logo on the back of your backpack Lanie? Looks like an ear with a line through it!
Thanks so much. The sign on my bag is the international symbol for deafness or hearing loss. I made it myself. I'm hard of hearing and wear hearing aids. I can't hear hikers or bicycles behind me.
I enjoy your videos but i am wondering the uphills from Leon to Ponferrada how bad are they compared to Sarria - Santiago? A friend wants to walk this route and asked me to ask. Also which month did you walk as it is so cold?😂
Thank you! We walked in September. The uphill to Ponferrrada is generally gradual. But the downhill into Molinaseca (before Ponferrada) is really tough.
Question: do y’all get the hiker hunger like folks on the Appalachian Trail?
Haha. A bit, but since there's a restaurant/bar usually every few hours, it's not so bad.
I noticed your not carrying your own packs, what transport do you use ? Are you concerned about theft ?
We are carrying our own packs! Everything I (Shawn) used for the whole Camino is in my lumbar pack (7L) including bedding, toiletries, clothes, snacks, and electronics. Lainey also only uses what’s in the bag you see. We pack really light!
I always carry runners gloves and hat merino and warmish. We walked the Camino Frances in May June last year and had some very cold days. We wore everything we had with us!
That’s the way to do it. Cold days happen - even in the summer - and a few light layers or accessories like gloves can make a huge difference.
