At 42:49, couldn't you have played Leveler, then used Mirror of Fate to put the cards you want back into your library so you don't lose? This would have given you both a 10/10 beater and an opportunity to find Jace and win.
Yeah, Leveler+Fate and Leveler+Maniac is basically the old combo package for Leveler. There are some other funny Leveler-Combos out there, but Jace took it to a new level.
42:35, play Ghost Quarter so you can Leveler with Mana Leak backup. There are still two Jace and two Lab Maniac in the deck. If Leveler sticks, you can make a pile like Jace, Serum Visions, Disrupting Shoal, Opt, Mirror of Fate if you want to rely on your Serum Visions in hand, or Opt on top of that pile if you want to play around Thoughtseize. If you didn't have to use Mana Leak, then you can immediately crack the pile with Serum Visions, putting Jace in hand and letting you decide if you want to draw cantrips or protection. The Mirror of Fate on the bottom of the pile lets you run it back if the opponent has more disruption than you can fight through at once. With a 10/10 on board, they'll need to do a lot to deal with two concurrent game plans (combo through cantrips with Jace, and Leveler beatdown). Would make the game very interesting to play out. However, it took me like 15 minutes to figure out a working pile, and it's not necessarily good. This is the trouble with Build-Your-Own Doomsday - if you make the right pile you almost certainly win. If you don't, you almost certainly lose.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure this doesn't work the way Seth expects. Angel's Grace would stop the win, but the replacement effect from Jace would prevent the game loss, so nothing happens and Seth can try again next turn.
That's correct. 614.6. If an event is replaced, it never happens. A modified event occurs instead, which may in turn trigger abilities. Note that the modified event may contain instructions that can't be carried out, in which case the impossible instruction is simply ignored.
Hey Seth ProbablyaBetterKnowAs Saffron Olive of the House Goldfish, Brewer of Decks, Master of Jank, and Commander of the Clashes....love e budget modern and this is another cool deck. Keep up the great work.
The best part of this is how you hit the combo almost everytime....I just bought all the cards for neobrand last week, and I saw the struggle in getting that to combo off.... Now there is pact of negation/ new force of will, and this deck looks more consistent lol
I played Non-Budget Jace Leveler combo on my channel and absolutely destroyed people with it. Such an underrated combo. Oddly, it was one of the best performing decks I ever played on my channel.
Game 1 against Sultai: I was personally confused why you would top Jace and then mill Jace. I would have kept the Jace on top as a back-up Jace in case the first dies, or bottomed it if I was planning on plussing anyway to dig deeper. I want to consider it a punt Ad Naus: Do you lose if your opponent casts Angel's Grace? I'm pretty sure your Lab Maniac effect would just fizzle, not you lose because you cannot win. I would've tried and if he Graces then you just pass the turn and win in your draw step.
He topped it in case the opponent countered the one he was playing, and then milled himself because he didn't want to risk milling iona/unburial rites for the opponent
Against Eldrazi, Their one out was thoughtknot seer, If you had not played Jace (You had Lab man out) You could have countered thoughtknot with Disrupting Shoal, Was yelling at the screen man....
But doesn't Chalice of the Void stop him from casting it? If you pitch the Jace to the counter the Thought-Knot Seer, the game treats X = 0 and the CMC of the Shoal would have been 2, which one of the Chalices was preventing.
Would this deck be better if we just had the Leveler in the SB and the mirror and ran the new Karn as a 4 of in the MB? So we can have artifacts in the SB to help us in certain matchups.
Huh. I can honestly say I've never seen a Mirror of Fate in a deck that won a game. I mean, sure, yeah, someone's probably put it into a playable-short draft deck and gone 1-2 but still.
I'm curious why not just use counterspell since most all of your mana base is going to be all in blue. Also, do you see cards like force of negation and flusterstorm having a place in this deck? I'm currently building this as my first intro into modern and I'm gonna be buying a box of modern horizons so I should have those resources available to me.
@mtggoldfish Hey is there any more easy way to slash white such as basics or less expensive lands? I just don't have around 500 dollars lying around but I want to try and make that variant work on a 150 to 200 dollar budget?
If you have Standard mana you could do something like 4 Glacial Fortress, 4 Hallowed Fountain and a couple of Plains, maybe with two copies of another dual land (like Adarkar Wastes or something). Blood Moon will be an issue, but it should function good enough for most matchups.
yes, even if they had angel's grace for that turn you would still just win during your next turn. if you ever do an Odds deck around mirror of fate, i encourage you to find ways to clone the mirror (saheeli, sublime artificer, for example). it's basically the same combo as leveler + mirror, a better doomsday.
I think this combo would be worth testing in a UW control shell. It’s better against death’s shadow and other aggressive decks, and you could have the combo as your wincon so you can steal some close games if you can’t stabilize.
It seems like with the ad nauseum matches angels grace really just buys them a turn because they still lose the next time you draw a card? Especially match 2 of the matchup.
Does Lab Maniac and Leveler work together? Cause you've had many situations that would have just required a draw step that you did get after you could have played them both. I could be wrong.
It does, although the risk is if the opponent can kill the Lab Maniac we die by milling ourselves out, so we need to pick our spots if we are going to try to win that way.
Playing out Jace in Game 3 vs Eldrazi was greedy. Odds are they boarded out Warping Wail , so you could have used Shoal to protect Leveler from the Thought Knot. Edit: Nevermind, they had that Dismember for some unknown reason still in the deck, and would have drawn it with you not having a 3 in hand to pitch.
21:30 Match 2 also would have worked out if you'd held onto your Jace to counter a potential Thought-Knot Seer with Disrupting Shoal; Shoal pitching a 1-drop also covered the Pithing Needle you mentioned later. At the time you didn't know you were going to draw a 5th land in the following turns, and Labratory Maniac could have been killed by disruption if they had any, so it's not a punt, but you would have won the game that way too.
Mirror is insane in this. Even if you don't have a jace you can play it, crack at the end of opponents turn leaving just 3 jaces. draw for your next turn and play jace for the win. A couple of the games could have gone that way.
Deck should play Torpor Orb in the sideboard, then you play Leveller and smash face. Maybe bring in a couple of Eater of Days and go full transformational sideboard.
I actually believe the non budget version should be blue green. Growth Spiral allows you to ramp and interact on the same turn. Dismember is probably good enough removal especially because it can let a Jace live even if it doesn't kill the creature. Memorial to Genius as a one or two of seems like an auto include. Gifts Ungiven with a pile of Jace, Leveler, Noxious Revival, Mission Briefing wins the game from nothing. Other piles are possible if you have a combo piece already. There might also be a way to win with Memory's Journey and Gifts but I can't think of it right now. You can Memory's Journey after playing Leveler/Mirror to put Jace on top. Not really sure how to get that set up though it will occur naturally fairly often.
Against sultai game one you could exile your library then crack the other piece to put two jaces and a lab man on top. Cast Jace, tick up, win. If they remove it, you have another.
Wow, someone else thought of this combo? Levi Thomas must be some sort of genius. How did he see that? Wow. He was the very first one. So cool. Such genius.
Why did you top a serum visions against sultai when all you needed was more lands to play Jace and have enough mana to protect it with Mana Leak? And then you found another Jace on top and milled yourself with Jace+1 after topping it a second earlier with visions. Opponent had the answer but you had the means to stop him if you just hadn't tapped out. Just seemed odd.
I definitely read this as posted a month ago, and the without the london mulligan comment in match 2 threw me off a lot. I dropped out of magic for a couple months and genuinely thought they changed the mulligan again for a minute
ö I've been doing this but for Oathbreaker and Commander, for Oathbreaker I have Jace Wielder of Mysteries and Tunnel Vision to either name my bottom card in case I have scryed or Name leveler
I don't know about strictly worst (Kiki Exarch dies to creature removal, for example) but it's probably worse in general (although Kiki Exarch is really tough on a budget thanks to the manabase).
Honestly swapping serum vision and the shoals for a cheaper alternative would do wonder to the price of the deck. The price of the deck could be around 30$ instead of 95.
U said it urself that Thought-Knot Seer was something that could beat u, if u had noticed that before playing Jace, u could've kept him in ur hand to counter the Seer with Shoal

Couldn't you have cast Leveler on 42:50, exiled your library then activated Mirror of Fate to pretty much stack your deck for the win?
I just came here to say this... I don't know why this wouldn't work
You are correct. Hey definitely could of given himself a chance to win.
This two is seths ability to "punt"
Definitely the comment I was going to post. Seth you punter!
yeah, wasn't that frustrating to watch him punt that game?
what a time for magic where a 5 mana blow up your own deck creature is a pretty decent win condition.

Hmm, maybe I was too worried about Angel's Grace.
The big worry there is the possibility of Jace being removed.
44:30 is it viable to play the levler then sacrifice the mirror of fate and end up with the 10/10 and 7 known cards no the library?
I swear you must have nightmares of eldrazi temple.
Yup.
And Tron lands.
That was the most savage Lab Maniac ever vs that Death Shadow opponent.
Lab Maniac beatdowns are the best. It's *soooo* unlikely to work, but every once and a while it does!
