For me as big of a question about why Magnus avoids Hans which never seem to be asked, is why everyone else does not avoid Hans too and why some tournaments ban Hans and others act as if there has never been a scandal about him. The inconsistency in sports is like the inconsistency in politics these days and it makes you wonder how much goes on behind the scenes which effect everything we see, but have no awareness of.

Not playing Hans is quite a difficult thing that requires a lot of preparation. But then how do you prepare for it? First, as a warm up, you do not play Anish Giri, then follow that with not playing Étienne Bacrot. Then, for good measure, you also do not play Wesley So. It is only then I would say you are ready not to play Hans Niemann.

2. Does this make those Players 'subbing' for Hans play more matches? Chess fatigues you mentally, so it's not about playing Hans, it's about playing MORE and thus being less effective. Now if that's not the case, if he subs for the person subbing for him... we're right back to point 1.
3. Didn't Hans beat that 2800 guy on the team? So they SHOULD be able to Beat Hans. But they literally dropped a match to him, right? That's on Magnus. Magnus is why they ate that Loss. Now in the overall, they still might win it all. But you play to Win, and Magnus threw a game because he wouldn't play Hans. That's a shit leader, right there. In any other competition, that would be called out. It's pretty weak.

BUT, that’s not a reason to say he’s sabotaging his team. His team could say “no” and they don’t. There is a mutual respect there. Not only that, but it’s allowed in the tournament, so if his team mates consent and the rules state it, why is that a bad thing?
Lastly, I could be wrong, but where does it say Magnus is the leader? I thought it was just a team thing, not a hierarchical structure.
Regardless, it’s moot, cause it’s not our business to mull over ethics and character cause it’s not our decision to make. Very similar, but not quite. Thermal baths are more of a spa thing. They also often contain added minerals and notably lack chlorine. Thermal baths are significantly more hygienic than hot tubs as the water doesn’t just perpetually sit there, rather being filled for use as you would for any other bath. This is also why you should shower before entering one rather than after, as it allows your skin to absorb the minerals left on your skin rather than washing them away.
One person has nothing to prove and the other does. If the format allows to be selective in who one plays then it's the format not the person that is the issue.

There's no way Carlsen will play Niemann in the Speed Chess Championship. So don't get too excited.
When Magnus quit in St Louis I said that Magnus proved to the world he is the biggest baby of all chess champions - and that was not an easy title to earn. At the time I was harassed and told I was a cheater. I don't think my opinion is as controversial as it was.

Magnus refusing to play Hans in 1v1 formats is a nothingburger; if he wants to spend a few Elo points to never deal with the guy, that's purely his decision.
But in a context like a team tournament, I feel like it starts to become a matter of sportsmanship. By refusing that match, instead of playing through it and letting the dice fall where they may, you're hurting your teammates to benefit yourself. It feels like anathema to the format.

Hans was the villain of this story. It's like Magnus is trying to swap places here. Be the bigger man and play him. Hans is moving toward his peak and Magnus is moving away from his. It may be that Hans peaks below the level that Magnus is at that point and Hans never catches up to Magnus. Magnus is scared of Hans. That explains his behavior exactly, and some people interpret it as Magnus having some justified reason. He doesn't. Magnus' behavior in St. Louis was inexcusable, and it continues. Magnus is actually a small person, despite his relatively large physical stature and high chess strength. BTW he quite the World Championship right after Nepo qualified again, so he's also scared of Nepo.
