It's America Dogg, hell many of us could be taken to court and found guilty of breathing and if the police get to you first they are authorized and sanctioned to put a stop to it. Deputy may have won the Officer of the Decade Award for this. At least he will make Honorable Mention. But he will get off after this quiets down a bit. Traitor Tatum will do all he can to see to it. One day they will turn on Tatem and he will come limping back to the hood, all scared and beaten to a pulp looking for his peeps but they will be either at a cemetery or serving 100-plus years in a maximum prison for a license plate light out. We are way too forgiving.

You can try to justify this all day, but a professional with a gun shot dead a man who was in his own home holding his own gun in a non threatening manner opening his own door as demanded by the government agent who was acting on the word of a dubious person who said she wasn't even sure where it came from. The professional government agent made mistakes that killed a man. He needs to be held accountable for his mistakes. A man is dead because of him. Took a 3rd party's word about a past disturbance. Took her word which apartment it was. Didn't appear to get the name of the resient and look at his history prior to knocking on the door. Didn't hear a disturbance. Shot a guy just because he was holding a gun in his own home. This Tatum guy has the boot so far down his throat that it has cut the oxygen off to his brain.

You know what made it a threat? The nature of the call, history of domestic incidents at his residence. What person in their right mind who has had cops called to his place before for similar incidents answer the door with a gun? Him being a serviceman, knowing it can take a split second for an enemy to turn deadly is very likely. This guy was not in the right state of mind.

What crime did Fortson commit? When did Fortson threaten the officer? Is it against the law to answer the door of your own place of residence with a gun? How do you know what is happening behind the door? Probably this. Probably that. Probably is an assumption. The other scenarios have nothing to do with Fortson. Right? How is having a gun unreasonable in a land where gun ownership is legal? We don't know why Fortson had a gun because he's no longer here to offer an explanation.

That cop stood at that door for a couple of second listening. To see if he heard any arguing between the couple. Which he did not. Please make this make sense. Where did self defense come in at. That young man never pointed his gun at the officer. Matter of fact the young man had his hand up like wait, wait don't shoot. That cop seen the gun in his hand, when Roger open the door. Instead of the telling Roger to put the gun down. He told him to step back than just started shooting. Was that to make it look like self defense. Well he had a gun. Was this planned by the people that called the police. It happens all the time. I'm so sick of people calling cops on innocent people for no reason. So where is the woman and man that was fighting. The first 2 times when the officer knocked and didn't announce himself, he became suspicious, and when the 3rd time that he knocked and decided to announce himself, now he feels like he's being pranked by a home invader, so that's a good reason for him to have the gun, and the purpose of him putting his hand up was to convince the officer that he wasn't no threat to him, especially with his gun pointed to the floor and no finger around the trigger, that's what US airman are trained to do when they feel like they are about to encounter someone who could be a threat but not sure, so yes the officer is still at fault for shooting without letting him explain why he had the gun on him

The door is not only ZERO protection and people have been killed by answering a knock or doorbell only to have the assailant shoot them through the door. The officer believes he is answering a domestic which is often considered the most dangerous type of call. Refer to the original video for context: the cop knocks on his door, and then moves out of sight of the peephole. Roger hears the loud knock at his door, and proceeds to walk to the walk to the door. As he is walking to the door, Roger says “Who is it?” (3:26), which strangely, wasn’t included in the subtitles in the video that the PD put out (even though it was clear as day what he said). The officer did not respond to him nor did he identify himself. So now it’s clear that roger made it to the door, and attempted to look through the peephole for about a couple seconds, only to see no one, because why? Because the officer was still out of sight of the peephole. At that point, Roger left the door, and was most likely going to retrieve his firearm for his safety. As he was walking away he said “I don’t know if it’s the police” (3:37) which if you say it fast, like how people often say it, and like he did, it sounds like “Ion if it’s the police”. Ion- (Pronounced: ow-n, or like noun without the “n”) is sometimes used as a shorter way of saying “I don't” or “I don't know.” So now, 4 seconds after walking away, Roger says something else which is extremely inaudible (3:41), which tells you that he walked into a different part of his house. 2 seconds later, the officer knocks for the second time, and identifies himself for the FIRST time (3:43). Now think for a moment. If the officer couldn’t make out what Roger said after he walked away from the door, how would Roger be able to make out anything that the officer said? So bam, now 8 seconds later, the officer knocks for the 3rd time (3:51) and identifies himself for the second time (3:54). But Roger had already got his weapon and is already in the motion of unlocking and opening the door, when the officer identified for the second time. And if you look at the body cam video, and put the playback speed at 0.25x, you will notice that at 3:58, the officer ACTUALLY said “Step out”, and not “Step back” which is written in the subtitles. Roger then complies, and proceeds to step out. He takes one step, and then the officer sees his weapon, unholsters his gun, and dished off 5 rounds at Roger. This is MURDER. And there is no justification for it.

So if you're implying that it only takes a split second for someone who already has the gun in his hand to kill you, you must be referring to the Officer. Though there was articulated reasonable suspicion to knock on that door via a 911 call, the deputy didn't speak with anyone who witnessed anything, and the woman who met the deputy stated she was relaying someone else's story. She didn't see the event and should've been treated as unreliable. The deputy, with his own senses, certainly did not observe anything while at the door that a DV had occurred or was occurring. In my mind, knocking on a door and not having any realized perception of an imminent threat doesn't reach the reasonableness standard of lethal force. The deputy could have believed a violent crime occurred or was occurring, but he never gained that knowledge to make a reasonable threat assessment and misjudged the situation. Firing on someone for the mere presence of a firearm without some articulated behavior to cause harm is not justifiable. Even if the deputy was in fear of his life, his actions still needed to be reasonable.

That's why you wait for backup; he didn't. He listened into the apartment before knocking and didn't hear any evidence of a disturbance which was supposed to be on-going. There were no exigent circumstances so you wait for your backup before moving forward. He didn't. Nor did he announce himself on the first knock. I understand why the officer moved to the side after knocking but understand if I'm in the apartment, here a knock with no announcement, go to the door, and can't see anyone, I going to a high state of alert.
Second, you are assuming that the Airman provided verbal acknowledgement that there was an officer at his door, Why, because Officer Tatum said so? You looked at the same video I did right? I could not make out the muffled sounds so I don't know exactly what was said, that was just speculation.
But here's what I do know. If you take into account the speed at which the officer shot the Airman, it's obvious that he already un-holstered his gun, had it in his hand and was prepared to fire when he knocked on the door. When the door slowly opened, the officer already had a clear advantage over Fortson who was stepping backwards with the gun pointed down to the ground. The officer could have stepped to the side, shielding himself with the wall, and ordered Fortson to put his weapon down. Or he could have waited for Fortson to attempt to raise his gun before unloading; again the officer had the clear advantage. The only hand Fortson had raised was his left hand with an open palm and spread fingers when the officer put 5 rounds in his chest - center mass. Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, then he orders Fortson to drop his weapon.

Not saying it was racial prejudice, though it could be, but definitely he prejudged the situation as a DV incident when there was absolutely nothing but hearsay for him to go by. One would think the lack of yelling and screaming would give the cop pause to consider if what he was told was accurate. He also seemed annoyed from the get go when talking with the apartment manager…like he didn’t have time or patience for nonsense and just wanted to get it over with, no questions asked. They accused me of letting my family dog out to harass neighbors, and I pointed out that there was a similar description stray dog behind the cops right then, even while our dog was barking her head off in the back room inside our house. On another occasion, I got wrongly lit up for a supposed lack of a front registration plate and berated when I didn't immediately pull over in an unfamiliar neighborhood, only to show the cop in a public gas station parking lot that I actually had both plates posted and he was talking out his @$$. After I beat a bogus stop sign ticket the cop came to my door to harass me and try to get me to slip up and confess something, even though he conveniently didn't bring any camera footage of the actual traffic stop, and when he failed to get me, I shut the door in his face. If you take into account the speed at which the officer shot the Airman, it's obvious that he already un-holstered his gun, had it in his hand and was prepared to fire when he knocked on the door. So when you say it takes a split second for someone who already has the gun in his hand to kill you, you must be referring to the Officer.
Because when the door slowly opened, the officer already had a clear advantage over Fortson who was stepping backwards with the gun pointed down to the ground and his finger off the trigger. The officer could have stepped to the side to be shielded by the wall and ordered Fortson to put his weapon down. Or he could have waited for Fortson to attempt to raise his gun before unloading; he had the clear advantage. The only hand Fortson had raised was his left hand with an open palm and spread fingers indicating please don't shoot before the officer put 5 rounds in his chest, center mass. Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, then he orders Fortson to drop his weapon.

There was NO domestic disturbance at that apartment on that day or any previous day. The victim was the only person in the apartment. The girlfriend lives in Georgia, and she was rarely even at the apartment. Ironically, a neighboring apartment on the same floor has had many, many complaints for loud arguments and domestic violence over the past few months. The individuals who called in the complaints didn't have their facts straight, which derailed the fiasco train from the start...

Police officers are trained to not stand directly in front of the doorway for safety purposes in case the person behind the door has a firearm and fires it through the door. That makes perfect sense. The officer is not required to announce himself before knocking or show himself through the peephole.

Officer Tatum probably did not break down the actual shooting and commands because he said earlier in his video that he would not show that part of the body cam footage due to UA-cam reasons. I don't think it was an oversight or that he was intentionally avoiding that part of the sheriff's action to avoid criticizing the sheriff. He was just operating within the youtube boundaries.

That me explain to you what happened. First of all, understand this a special force airman, so he is used to having a gun in his hand. 2nd, the officer first knocked on the door but never announced himself . Two times. Airman looked through his peep hole and, at that point, got his gun. What failed to realize is that the officer never showed himself for the airman to see. Now you got somebody at your door that knocked two times but never said anything. Then he knocked again and said he was with the sheriff's office but still dont show himself. Which made the airman suspicious. End the once the airman realized that it really was a sheriff officer, he started complying. The reason it's a bad shoot is that once the officer raised his gun when he saw the airman with a gun, he should have commanded the airman to drop the gun. The officer already had the advantage with his gun aim at the airman, and the airman gun is by his side. He chose to unload on him 6 times. Then tell him after he shot him to drop the gun. He never gave the airman a chance. I serve in the Marines, and we never shot this quick, just a person having a gun. This officer should be fired and charge.

I saw an eerily similar video where a white dude was shot in the back while he was trying to put his firearm down after answering 2 cops who knocked and ducked out of line of sight on peephole. he was playing games with his girlfriend. it was a noise complaint. shooting officer panicked and immediately opened fire even though weapon was pointed down and guy was attempting to comply.
I’m sorry but police are not military in an insurgency, they are trained to pull that trigger way too quickly.

Officers are trained to avoid standing in the fatal funnel area and to emphasize the importance of having a backup partner. The Florida Castle Doctrine allows individuals to use force, including deadly force, to defend themselves against intruders in their home, vehicle, or any other place where they have a legal right to be, aiming to provide clear protections for self-defense.
In the incident described, when the door was opened, the individual had the gun pointed down and raised his left hand to signal recognition of the Deputy. Answering the door with a gun can be a reasonable precaution if there is uncertainty about the visitor's identity. The Deputy asked him to step out, but the sheriff has not clarified how they confirmed they were at the correct apartment, even though the individual was on FaceTime with his girlfriend at the time. Deputies are allowed to use deadly force if they reasonably feel their life is in danger. However, the deputy should have obtained background information from dispatch to verify if they had previously been to that apartment. Relying solely on information from a complainant is insufficient; officers need to conduct their own investigation.
Additionally, the complainant claims about hearing a "slap" sound or what appeared to be an argument weeks ago is questionable and if it was a serious concern, a call to the police should have been made immediately and could have been anonymous. The deputy’s reaction appeared to be an overreaction out of fear.
