- Have you ever wondered how the pros properly bib in liner into tight places? Here's a method that works incredibly well.....
There are many techniques that can be used to do what we did here, but we wanted to really lock these stones into place. By using this method, you can do a better job locking the rock into place, the seal will better with age as the underlayment clogs up, and you will use less foam.
This spillway will have about 18-20,000 gallons per hour flowing over it so we aren't that worried about water seeping through the underlayment.
If it becomes a problem, we can always cut a piece of scrap liner to fit the void, lay a foam bead around the perimeter, and lay the liner on top of the foam bead adhering the liner to the underlayment and completing a tighter seal.

there are several ways to do this. the most common way is to backfill with gravel, and cover with liner (read the description in the video), but I wanted to take it to another level. I like this method better, but think ill still cover it with a piece of scrap liner if i dont like the final effect.
Watching your channel for the first time, I'm working on a much smaller scale and am a bit of a novice, but have learnt some key stuff already, cheers matey.

Super inspiring video! As I build an 8'x10' babbling brook in my basement's side yard! Depth is not required I just learned! So very cool. I plan to have a lighted spillway flowing into a small pool, which empties over some shallow/ low tide routes, all meeting and forming a small 2' high by 8" wide waterfall! Hello…thank you for the great videos! In the beginning you mention about the falls. When you build them do you start at the spill box and work towards the pond or start at pond and work up to the spill box? Thank you!
I like to march up hill. It guides me better into the natural flow of water.

yes, works about the same. the underlayment clogs with age and you get the same effect. :)

Lol, was going to ask the same question. Only issue with clay I guess is if the falls are turned off for long periods of time. I think you could expect cracking to occur and it could allow water down through crack once finally turned on. Is this assumption correct or would I be wrong? It actually is an important question as I was think of using clay on a job that I have coming up.
I saw Jack from Atlantis Water Gardens talk about bibing with a rubber liner in one of his videos. Would you put one on top of your compacted sand wrapped in underlayment? Overtime how does that method hold up with high volume streams?

Great question. 7 months old, 20,000 Gallons per hour flowing over it. Zero issues.
As long as the underlayment holds, the sand will.
I've seen underlayment last 15 plus years looking just fine on many remodels. :)

Thanks for the info! Question: when using bibbing, you mention that you will cover the fabric/sand pillow with rubber and i imagine you use foam to secure the rubber. How do you fuse/adhere rubber to rubber? I understand using sealant tape to attach rubber to rubber - a straight forward process in a controlled environment when you can stretch out the rubber/lay on flat surface/prime/tape/seal... but how about within the waterfall where the rubber can have folds/creases, be raised (i.e., not flat on a hard even surface). Will you use Foam to seal rubber to rubber? Will you use tape sealant?

If the purpose is to bib, then a pure watertight seal is not 100 percent necessary, although it is the goal. If the purpose is to seam, then 100 percent water tightness is necessary.
When bibbing, we don't usually go for watertight, we aim for flow direction if that makes sense. In this case, this pond is 3 years old and this particular area has performed exceptionally well. We still do the maintenance on this pond and the homeowners have become friends.
If you are seaming, then those folds do get in the way. My recommendation is to do the best you can with double sided seam tape first, followed with cover tape, and to run perpendicular patches over the cover tape to cover the folds. Our standard practice on really bad folds is to literally cut the fold out and patch it like we would any other hold with cover tape.
There are videos you can watch on Firestone's website that show you step by step how to seam and how to apply primer, etc.
