And so they may remain....one of the best classes of locomotives built...could be a rough ride at times...but an A1 would always get you to your destination. Thanks for posting this video...brings back many memories for me?
Hard to think it was over 50 years ago. I grew up in Potters Bar and was regularly taken as a small boy to see the steam trains. To think that the Deltics and the HSTs that subsequently took over front line duties on the ECML have themselves passed into history.
Such a beautiful steam locomotive, now their legacy loves on in Tornado... which as of writing this is in bits as it in overhaul... but still beautiful non the less

The A1's are a fantastic type of engine. It does make history happy that Scotsman became an A3 but left only but none A1's left. But, Scotsman does have the A1 feel and is still a great A1/A3.
This isn't the original Scotsman type A1, this is the one designed by Arthur Peppercorn in the 1940s. Tornado, built in 2008, is still around today. Scotsman is very different to these locos IMO.
yeah how ever the plans for no 60163 are like 56 years old or something tornado was built after the peppercorn A1s where scrapped cuz tornado was made in 1994 - 2008
The Britannia,s the Duchess the Princess Royal class and even a V3 but no one thought to preserve at least one A1 ?? If it was,nt for Tornado being built from scratch no example of a A1 would exist
@@jmtrainz2582 Utter bollocks. I worked with an ex Gateshead driver who had driven everything on the ECML, he reckoned they were "cracking locomotives", "unbreakable" he called them.
Last withdrawn I believe, though I think having Tornado was ultimately the better outcome. She’s largely original in her design, just factory fresh and with some of the kinks ironed out. I think she’s more impressive than a preserved A1 ever would have been, the sheer dedication and ingenuity that went into her, really a work of art. But then again, Mungo would’ve definitely been a star had she escaped the torch.
This melody was originally part of "Jupiter, Bringer of Jollity" from Holst's "The Planets". The melody is heard somewhere near the middle of the movement. I performed it as a senior in high school. This particular chorale section has been adapted and rearranged for several things, similar to the hymn section of Sibelius' "Finlandia". Of all the arrangements I've heard of the Jupiter chorale, this has to be one of the best. If you haven't heard the original, I personally recommend looking it up; it's well worth the time :)
And if the people in charge of the A1 trust used their heads they could run Tornado with the names and numbers of long lost examples ,but in their "wisdom" they don't/won't

Gordon would be very proud.
soundnicetome how do u mean a rough ride ?
No reports say they gave a rough ride, not that I can find anyway
tornado: hi
In their Heyday, the A1s were truly powerful and magnificent machines
Glad you enjoyed it! The music is "I Vow To Thee My Country". It is the instrumental, Orchestral version by Gustav Holt.
Haltwhistle00
From the Planet Suite?
Haltwhistle00 this was also played in Winston Churchill's Funeral video.
It's from 'Jupiter', from Holst's 'Planets' suite.
@@paulcaswell2813 and also played in Queen Elizabeth II Funeral Video.
Looks like these engines never suffered from flat spots, they always smooth out their wheels when starting a train.
Even though we have Tornado to carry their legacy, I still wish some of the original A1s got a chance to be preserved.
All of the original peppercorn A1 locos are scrapped as of today except the brand new loco 60163 tornado which arrived in 2008
Which is a shame but at least Tornado is the new and now sole member of the A1 Peppercorn class.
Watched these magnificent machines in the day...never realising that they would go....fantastic steam??
Is this the class that great northern of the A3s got converted into

British steam locomotives of the 20th century are (in my opinion), the most beautiful machines in the entire world
those where the best days
Very enjoyable indeed!
My favorites are WP Allen (BRWS) & Tornado.
every one of them scrapped. Sad that not even one was saved from the original 49
Such beautiful engines. Did anyone know that 60157 Great Eastern was going to be preserved but Blue Peter was instead after a miscommunication?

I totally forgot Tornado existed...
Sadly, none of theys beautifull machines where preserved, butt we have 60163 Tornado, the first steamlocomotive built for the 21st century

Shame that none of the original Peppercorn A1s were preserved. It would have been better if we had ten original Peppercorn A1s in preservation
Makes me wish that more Pacifics and E2s survived
The E2s were shit.
Aye. Thomas deserves to ride the rails again.
They were a failure, couldn’t steam, weak, too big.

60145 Saint Mungo should have been the candidate for preservation.

@@theaccountofmine.8779 , it would have been better if we had two original Peppercorn A1s in preservation: 60145 Saint Mungo and 60158 Aberdonian
Well at least we have Tornado to carry their legacy
Allen from British Railway Series
To bad saint mungo,a A1 that was planned to be preserved, was scrapped.atleast we have tornado to represent mainline steam
Diesel Dave14 I thought it was Great Eastern! I hope they build more A1s, like WP Allen and Great Eastern and Kittiwake and Patrick Stirling.
The Peppercorn A1s in their Heyday.
Why no description or commentary; and what’s with the apostrophe?
Why does it look like these locomotives were painted very dark grey
Are you using I vow to thee my country?
Enjoyed the clip, can you tell me the title of the music?
I never understood why the A4's were preserved the A2's the A3 the b
At least Arthur Peppercorn had a much better image then Thompson
GUYS you know 60163 well there a replica but there plans to build them are over 60 years old
2:40 "express engines don't haul freight". THEN EXPLAIN THIS
Scotch Goods....
Bruh imagine scrapping all 49 of these.
Imagine rebuilding Gresley’s first pacific into something hideous.
The B1 was the only good Thompson design, rest were mehhh
Left the locoyard for scrap ;)
Tbh the A2/3 wasn’t that bad
Hey! The K1’s, O1’s and L1’s weren’t that bad! They’re Thompson designs!
What was the music you used?
sounds like the game civilization 5s soundtrack
I can confirm that it is "I Vow to thee my Country", instrumental version
