- Our resident metaphysical oracle, Future Joel, soul-bonds with “Midnight” Mike Hussa to demonstrate the infinite groove of the Roland GR-700 Guitar Synthesizer. Now, this is no toy. This is a previously unidentified funk object. This UFO came to us through a beam of laser light from the future-past to share the mathematical secrets that bind the very fabric of space-time, like how eight times eight equals infinity, and the wisdom of fast neck plus contoured body equals who f****** cares. So fire all your friends, because time is a flat circle. That’s just the way it is and things will never be the same. Also, we’re pretty sure Joel did not read any books by Carl Sagan.
The Roland GR-700 guitar synthesizer introduced by Roland in 1984. In response to complaints about the timbral limitations of the previous model, the GR-300, Roland turned away from the GR-300's phase-locked oscillators and went back to using a pitch to voltage converter to generate a pitch control voltage and gate signal for each string, in the manner of the earlier GR-500 model.

This is without a doubt one of The Best demos Chicago Music Exchange and Joel have done! I haven't laughed so hard since the Gene Simmons Axe Guitar Demo. The best lines were "You can fire your church," and "you can fire those nerds." Great demo Joel, keep the demos coming!
This is CME gold!
Lol
Gosh, yes, humor is the one important thing in a hardware demo, not actually giving us insight into how easy it is to have it track accurately, and so on.
"You can fire your church" literally made me laugh coffee through my nose a little. So great.
🤔
Robot's-taking-my-job blues
The DeLorean of guitars.
What we need to know are things like how accurately it tracks, how things like vibrato and glissandos work. Instead, you're just clowning around, and it sounds sloppy, and we can't tell whether it sounds sloppy because you can't or won't play carefully, or because of a fundamental hardware limitation.
Awesome to see this on here. I love my GR-700 and G-707
LAW & ORDER! @2:32
SVU!
Possibly the best product demo video ever...thank you!
I have one. They were nicknamed the "Daleks Handbag" back in the day... Guitar plays not just well but REALLY well. It's an incredibly well made guitar, really rips. Ibanez built them under contract for Roland, and when the contract ended Ibanez didn't renew it, instead making their own IMG-2010 X-Ing Midi guitar with a virtual whammy bar. Synth wise it needs a very perfect technique to play it without it glitching, which you hear a fair bit in the video. One of it's main powers is controlling other synths too, but tbh you need the PG-200 programmer for this GR-700. The GR-700 unit is just a Roland JX-3P with Juno 106 voice chips - This is actually why the JX-3P is 6 voice! The GR-700 is actually an incredibly good sounding stereo analog synth when programmed well - it's just a shame it doesn't have a midi in port to control it from a keyboard.
For those curious for more info check out www.joness.com/gr300/
I have two
!!!!
@@BrettBurnardStokes I removed the whammy bar and installed active EMGs. The tracking improved a lot - previously the thing had barely been playable.
This is now my favorite Joel video, which of course makes it my favorite CME video. We need more Joel!
Every once in a while, when I'm down, I watch this video again and I'm no longer sad. It's math.
Joel stuntin' on the synth with Adidas Samba RMs?! Certified badass.
LOL the renaissance fair demo was fabulous 🤣🤣
that Stairway to Heaven intro was hilarious
This is easily my favorite CME demo I’ve seen
Awww man I feel old!! I remember when these came out! Band I was playing in at 15, in 82/83, and my other guitar player bought this rig and my drummer bough Simmons Drums for like 3 G's😳Couldn't give it away 2 years later lol! Great demo Joel!!!!
I bet y'all had some fun with em!!
The Chad Pad We did! Band was 4 of us ranging from 15-17 yrs old with two older musicians traveling tri state area doing current MTV hits! Made enough on weekends to not have to work anywhere else!! Fun times and still playing today and so are my kids!
I was 18 when this instrument was released to the market and now I'm turning 54... Sigh~
So, you're 54. What else?
"you can fire the church?"
- Varg Vikernes
////time is a flat circle it folds on itself/// lol that is EXACTLY how I eat my pizza... folded, like there is no time!
AWESOME demo, Joel!!!
The G-707 was THE coolest-looking controller guitar!!!
And for those who were asking about the first song, it was 'Axel F', originally done by Harold Faltermeyer on the 'Beverly Hills Cop' soundtrack.
This is like, a red square, a yellow triangle, and a blue circle. Totally rad.
The one thing I wanted to know, he eventually mentions but dismisses with "...that's totally irrelevant."
*Roshambo by The NetWork starts playing*
Yep I remember that lag.
Great vid.
Lol yes! About 70msec on the low notes. Hard to play Axel F with full synth dialed in on this! ..but it is cool and has character and a beefy sound. I just love the G707 guitar though. Only one I could actually play! I replaced my bridge pickup with a darker-sounding Ibanez humbucker! This guitar is worth the money by itself!
Good to see you again, Joel!
1:32 it's the sound of Steve Stevens synth horns on Billy Idol "Flesh for fantasy"
I love this so much
That was great! Hope some upcoming demos are as entertaining! :-)
This is literally the best gear review ever
Thank you! Subscribe for more!
This must have cost a FORTUNE back in 1984. Super geek cool!
Yes! Yes! Yes! Joel for President
Goddammit. Now I need one.
Great music choice.
Easily Chicago Music exchanges best demo! Robot hands down!
I wanna see the outtakes of this video! :-)
Freaking HILARIOUS ! (Nothing like a 1/8 second time ( from attack, to actual, O- CASIO Sound. [ LITTERLY, In the late 80's ] Pawn shops Couldn't GIVE these away ! For Guitar "Synth" ( Which ISN'T My thing,) The Godan Tracks the Best by Far... I had a gig W/Roland , to Demo thier G synths.& quickly figured that out. But Straight up Truth... CME IS The BEST of ANY Store to Buy ANYTHING, On line or, to Talk to A HUMAN.. Who Actually Plays ! & Customer Service, Above & beyond. For REAL ! Thank you.
Joel, you made my day... I’m still laughing.... thanks!
Yo all I wanted was some synth demos and he hit me with “the future is the past” like holy shit bro.
Legit tho this vid is fucking hilarious
Fire that guy! Fire your church! Fire those nerds! That was fucking hilarious
SUBSCRIBE & TURN ON NOTIFICATIONS TO NEVER MISS A VINTAGE GEAR DEMO!
I played it in the 90,s. On a steinberger with a gk 1. Also complete drum solos
Good and simple times
Would have loved to hear the Judas Priest Turbo effects demo'd, 3-5 is the effect for the intro to Turbo Lover
Bringin back the 80s!! ;) I love the description. On point. I'm getting some Mighty Boosh "funky ball o' tits from outer space" vibes
This is pure entertainment. Big ups.
Awesome video. Awesome axe.
An 80s classic guitar
I want to see you two as the Harald Faltermyer cover band playing in clubs in Chicago.
"Yew can fy-r doze gice" The Chi-town is strong wit dis geye
The bar over the neck has any fonction besides aesthetic purposes?
purpose:“you need that flamboyancy in order to survive in the 80s😈 ”
It actually makes for a VERY NICE sustain on the guitar itself.
Cleans up the fundamental.
I wish they bring this back as limited edition like the fender strat hm
Fuckin space blues. That's what you want.
Love me some space blues...
Crazy how far technology has gone. You could do this all with a pedal and no GK pickups either!
My buddy’s shop just got one of those in.
Elliot Easton played one of these at Live Aid, 1985. Why couldn't he have Pete Townsend join him on stage to smash the thing?
I have bought a Roland GR-700 guitar synthesizer but I don't any jacks to use it, who can help where to buy them? Thanks from Vietnam.
There's a guy on Reverb who 3d prints the jacks and hand-pulls the wires to the pins. Look up "24 Pin Clone" -- looks like good quality and he's been responsive to messages over the years.
@@stevensullivan5797 Thank you very much for your help, how can I contact with him??
Haha looks like a blast!
Why is he wearing safety glasses?
How much lol I'm in Chicago
how does it work in a live band context? regards.
Anyone know where you can get that strap he’s wearing?
Haha! "You could fire your church."
Safety first
Pittsburgh Dad's Chicago cousin.
It's a JX-8P internally
YOU CAN FIRE YOUR CHURCH..//YEAAAH
How high were you
Not once did you hit the Judas Preist Turbo sound. You had one job.......
1:10 8 x 8 = 64, you smooth brainer
What are the safety glasses for?
Because this gear is FIRE!
Isn't that the guitar Judas Priest used?
I had one of those as a teenager, my sister's boyfriend gave it to me. I hated it because it wasn't a Jackson. I was an idiot.
ONLY Chicahgoh.... OHH!
Talkin blade runner blues
2:10 You can resolve it on a sad lonesome chord.... but plays Emaj chord....
Definitely the best still is the gr55
Sounds cheesy, but looks like a lot of fun to play.
Exactly!
@@chicagomusicexchange That's what matters 👍 Cool presentation.
Yeahhhj!!!!!
Why doesnt anyone take these instruments seriously?
What’s the song on the intro ?
Crazy frog latency shit
Alel F by Harald Faltermyer as heard in the soundtrack to "Beverly Hills Cop" back in the day.
Lmao
beilayd
Sign me up
Who told this guy he is funny?
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂👏👏👏👏
lol

I want to sell my boss dr880
You can fire your church
Fire your Church
There is no God.
Just get a keyboard You wont have to deal with tracking issues/ latency The iconic GR 300 is still the best.
there is plenty softwear that does it better with a standard guitar no need for guitar synths anymore
Too much latency only speak on that many people know maths.... then buy yourself one... Ur one is old n dusty
why does he have safety glasses on? Also what an ugly guitar looking thing.
It's quite rubbish actually... I am sure that a guitar player can play better keyboard on an actual cheaper keyboard (more easily with better results) than settling of this ...
I just don't get who would actually want to buy this... But then may be I am wrong...
Ok so this was a joke... (Old gear review) so now I get it a bit
You obviously don't have one. So why comment like so?
You also seem ignorant about the differences (and impossibilities) of playing certain notes/chords on keyboard vs. guitar... SMH
You have no clue what this guitar and synth can do (and quite apparently, at that.)
@@KeithPhillips Pls do read properly. I play both keyboard and guitar... And my comment was about playing keyboard on this and not the other way round (i.e. Trying to emulate the guitar sounds on a keyboard using samples or instrument modelling) and I am sure that the video was not made for the people who actually have this... But for those who don't.. anyways thanks for your time
@@DrBharatSinghSambyal gotcha! Sorry for misunderstanding :)
I do love the G707/GR700 though...the guitar itself is fantastic!
Damn this was an amazing demo. Joel came back super strong or took enough of those crazy pills and lost his mind playing that thing. Had to watch it twice since I can't like twice, Fix that Joel. Use your crazy carl sagan future mind.
