Wow, great content - both know how and how you explain it - slowly and patiently. Not to mention the support in comments and the membership option! I'm an instant fan 😊
Yay! Too many UA-camrs stretch their demos for "dramatic effect." My preference is to tell you what you need to know as quickly and efficiently as possible, so you can get back to your work. Thanks for your kind words. Larry
Great video, I have all your books! Remember the Panasonic DX100? and the HVX200? Just started using FCP X, media storage set up is killing me. Did just what you said and no matter what I do, it shows all my files as missing unless I go back to the original external drive I used. I was trying to understand how it's storing things, so I created a folder on one external drive, then copied on another external drive, disconnected the first to make sure it was only pulling from the 2nd, and it was showing all my files were missing no matter where I pointed the library to. Do you have any other videos that might help me wrap my head around this?
Don John's Music: Smile... it is easy to get confused. Two different things are going on here. Changing/resetting the library location won't work if media is stored OUTSIDE the library; which is what I recommend in most cases. Your media is not stored in the library, it is stored in one of your external drives. Changing the library pointer does not change anything outside the library. To fix this, select all offline media - I just select the entire library, it's faster - then choose File > Relink Media. Once you point to the first offline file (listed at the top of the panel), FCP will find the rest automatically. This only needs to be done when you move your media. So, figure out where you want media stored BEFORE you import it and you won't have this problem. Larry
@@LarryJordanFCP Hallelujah I saw the light! I just did a test that worked! See if this makes sense to you. I created a new library, that is created on the external HD of my choice, In this folder I put all my things, audio, movie, graphics, whatever. I'm leaving the defaults as FCP has them. I save a project and it worked. I moved that to another drive, opened it and everything was there! That was just with one file, but I would think it would be the same with no matter how many files I have there. You're the best!
Hi Larry, thanks for the info! In the new storage location, FCPX creates all these separate folders with names as dates, how can i prevent it from doing so and store all clips just in one folder? thank you
Caspar: As long as you point your storage to a master folder, I wouldn't worry about the sub folders within it. There are no performance or organizational benefits to storing all files in a single folder. So, I create a single folder for the media and other files for a project, then let FCP create as many subfolders within it as it needs. Larry

I managed to move my libraries, cahche to external disk but not the motion temples folder.. how can I do it? Thank you in advance. - - - Motion templates that are shipped by Apple can't be moved. They are installed on your internal hard drive/ssd. Templates that you create can be stored wherever you want. Let me write this up as an article and post it here. It isn't hard, but takes a few steps. Larry
Wilky Travels: Sigh... I was wrong. You can store media, cache files and FCP backups to external media. You can only store motion templates Movies > Motion Templates or the library. I don't know why Apple has this limitation. However since my general recommendation is to store the library on external media as well, you might consider changing the storage location for motion templates to be stored in the library. Select the library in Final Cut. Go to Library Inspector > Storage Locations and change Motion Content to Library. Larry
Panda: To help me understand, you are trying to change the location of the library file, or the media in it? The Library can simply be copied from one drive to the next. 1.40: If we want to send the library to someone else (so that when he opens in in his fcpx on his mac, he will have exactly what you have) and we consolidate everything into a libary file to do so, how would that work with Motion content files? So say this Motion content on our mac is generated from purchased/installed plugins (eg transitions, effects, titles, generators and even motion templates), but the person who we will send this consolidated library file to will not have any of these plugins purchased or installed. So how would he be able to get all this in front of his mac and use it after he opens the library file we send him? (If he can, wouldn't that mean that he will, henceforth, also, have these plugins & content that he hasn't bought to use freely?
Nounix 3: Great question. 3rd--party Motion plugins would need to be purchased by both editors, the ability to consolidate Motion templates into the Library only applies to Motion templates that you created. And, yes, any templates bundled with your library would be available to that second editor for other projects. Larry
@@LarryJordanFCP Ok I just got confused with what you said. :P You write that any templates/plugins I used in my fcpx project would also be available to the person receiving the library, for him to use henceforth, but that he would also need to purchase the plugin. @@nounix To the best of my knowledge. plugins that you purchase are not aggregated into the library. This means they would not transfer when you send the library to another editor. @Larry Jordan Thanks! That's what I needed to find. Mine's in Movies and it's already 60GB and I can't look inside of it which is what I was concerned about. Now I know I can at least find it and delete it if it gets any more out of hand. Thanks again!
