I LOVE that they gave us this scene! I remember people on tiktok making jokes about how kaz would definitely outsmart the darkling if they would ever meet each other SO WHEN I TELL YOU I SCREAMED WHEN THIS SCENE CAME UP...
The darkling: An ancient all powerful devious shadow summoner Kaz: an angsty 17 year old with murderous tendency’s, a cane and a bad knee. Us as a fandom: Kaz would win
i just need you to understand how hard using "ninja turtle" as a verb made me laugh, i thought i needed to get my fucking inhaler, holy shit please you are a god
Oh my god I would love that it would be like the scene in the fifth Percy Jackson book where Rachel hits the titan Kronos in the eye with her hair brush
I love how Kaz defends Alina even though he likes to think he's neutral, morally gray, and cares about money the most. He knows at this point that Alina is a sun summoner, something of a saint. Inej has gotten to him. And he knows she's being taken advantange of through ravkan politics. He feels pity for her and maybe by extension, feels hope. He's a good guy at the end of the day.
The one thing that makes Kaz instantly disrespect someone is if they treat women badly, particularly if they groom women, hold them as captives, and use them. This side of Kaz likely comes from his feelings for Inej and understanding of her situation, so it makes sense he cuts into the Darkling for his questionable relationship with Alina in the first place considering that. Kaz allows his "Dirtyhands" reputation to speak for itself, but he does have a few lines he won't cross and his own sort of moral compass.
@@caitlinb35 that’s why Kaz reminds me of Go Dong Mae in Mr.Sunshine, both men are consumed with vengeance and trauma and want women to be treated fairly.
kaz is a much better person than he wants people to think he is, he builds up this "dirtyhands" persona/reputation that has no morals and would do anything only if it benefited himself but the truth is that he DOES have morals & does care for people especially his friends of course even when he wouldn’t admit it.
I think people overlook what Kaz did here, even without knowing that the guy is centuries old, from Kaz perspective, he still is facing a powerful general with way more experience than him, he knows he can't win using brute force, but he knows how to read people, and he noticed that Alina is of some kind of importance to him, so what does Kaz do? He uses the knowledge he has to play on his emotions, he basically told him: "*You* fucked up, that girl doesn't want to be with you, and its your fault, deal with it" he mocks him about it, he makes him angry and act impulsively, Kirigan is too angry to plan and fight calculated, but Kaz kept his cool so he's able to improvise an escape, I even think Kaz could have been acting nervous on purpose (+ his cane helps a lot) to make Kirigan put his guard down and underestimate him.
I asked Leigh Bardugo about this scene. She described it as “Batman vs Superman.”, and as soon as the scene was shown to her, she was adamant that it stay in no matter what.
I love the fact that while the other crows actually fight the Grisha pursuing them, Kaz knows that he’d be screwed if he tried that with Kirigan so he just bolts😂
i love that you can see actual fear in Kaz here, which i’m glad for because Kirigan is and should be an actual threat to most if not all given his role in the series, but Kaz isn’t so fearful that he can’t throw in a couple verbal zingers at the literal Darkling. i imagine the moment he saw the guy he was immediately thinking “okay how can i get out of this,” because Kaz is nothing if but pragmatic.
Let this moment be a lesson for The Darkling to never underestimate Kaz, he may be limping, but he's very aware of what he's doing. I also like that fact that Kaz doesn't seem to fear him, he even has the nerve to mock him a bit before he disappears.
Lmao we all knew Kaz being the same shot as DarKlingon would be fun to watch. The fact that they gave us Kaz & Darkling, Inej & Alina, Nina and the crows interaction is GOLD✨
I can believe this. When Kaz planned on going after the Sun Summoner, he probably knew there would be a chance they might encounter the Darkling. So he had a demo expert (*cough* Wylan *cough*) make him a bomb that could repeal the darkness. I wouldn't even be surprised if Kaz purposely made sure that the battle ground was that alleyway, so he can map out the escape routes in such an encounter.
oh heck yes. especially with the way he was walking so casually, right by the nook of the building. Keterdam has a lot of small alleyways like this one and he most definitely knows how to hide in shadows. a genius through and through 👏🏻
I cannot get over how the darkling, the black heretic, the creator of the fold was beaten- perhaps not in combat, but bested nonetheless- by an ordinary man with a limp and less than two decades of life experience.
I could only assume that no one had ever thought to use a flash bang against his cut. Hence why even with all those years of experience, kirigan was still tricked
This scene is priceless. When I first saw it, I thought each of the crow team got an opponent in this episode and Kaz got the worst one he could get. But it was pretty cool how he managed to trick the Darkling
The fact that the darkling didn’t consider Kaz had a cane so he probably couldn’t had climbed the walls or run away quickly and was probably hiding on a corner
i feel like ppl saying kaz’s defense of alina in this scene is solely for protecting inej don’t understand his character at all. you can see it especially in the way his voice bites at “captive”. he has a big soft spot-yes IN CANON-for those who have been taken advantage of whether by political gain, grooming, or sexual mistreatment. inej and another woman in the books are canon examples, and now alina as well. just as when he felt distaste to inej using the words “bought” when referring to herself under kaz, he doesn’t like the idea of people being subservient to one another. just like alina was about to be in the darkling’s grasp, and once kaz grasped that i think is when he actually took a stand to help alina, even if inej was the one helping nudge him to SEE it. he isn’t a one-track mind that only does things for himself or the crows, y’all.
Exactly, and this scene is a good demonstration. You can see the subtle disgust and contempt in Kaz's eyes for what the Darkling has done to Alina, using her merely as an object for his supposed future and his ideals. Instead of respecting her and treating her like an equal as he should have done. And the anger as his voice bites into the word captive as you mentioned.
