Never seen such a lazy real estate agent letting 80 year old sell her own home. Betty deserved any commission. New estate agent would have been in order for me..
All estate agents are like this in South Devon 🙄
@@michellefathers1619 they are lazy buns
She’s an embarrassment to her profession!! to say that if they ask us to show it, we would do that. NO!,, her job, and the money that she gets for listing that house requires HER to do that not the householder who’s 80 years old . The agent needs to go back to school and come to realize what her responsibility is. It is Unbelievable the lack of real concern for people and yet they want their money!
Yes lazy realtor.saves all car trips to showing homes
She shouldn’t have gotten paid
SHAME on that lazy agent. I would have told her to kick rocks!
That agent is a disgrace to her industry.
and the cow head in the office ????
Lazy more like.
You don't look at the decor , you look at what you could do with it, it's possibilities, taking into account such things as the size of the room.
It surprises me how many people can't see past a bit of decor!
Unfortunately, today, lack of imagination is the norm. I think the Internet is part of this problem.
Particularly young people can’t “look at the bones”. They want IKEA all finished.
Right. I've watched too many episodes of househunters where they will say I love the house but the color in the small bedroom is wrong. Seriously, ever heard of paint?
I worked in property doing viewings. Most people cannot see past decor AT ALL. You have to paint a picture for them.
This was filmed in 2008, it wouldn't last 92 minutes on the market today!
I think your wrong there. People can't afford to buy at moment . .cos of the Wats. I'm in London , all the roads and my road ,loads of houses up for salw , just bot selling. One round corner just sold end of terrace
Bin on market before COVID.
3 years ago, it would. Not now, interest rates are through the roof and because of that nobody is buying.
The constant reference to the nonexistent shagpile carpets is so irritating. Plus if the presenter can’t tell the difference between orange and yellow, I wouldn’t want her to decorate my house.
Just a small note: that is not blue shag carpet; it is sculptured carpet which predates shag.
I just love Betty so much. Wish I had a grandmother like her.
I noticed that.Sometimes the ignorance is because they are young and so unfamiliar with older things and styles. I'm with you on Betty, wasn't she a sweetheart.
Can only imagine what a nightmare the unseen rooms remain. Kitchen? Bathroom? No wonder it hasn't sold. They are the crucial rooms when it coes to selling the house. Anyone with a grain of sense can see past clutter and surface decor, but kitchens and bathrooms usually set the £££ signs rolling in people's minds.
Why are they still using that same estate agent?!...
Usually estate agents get sellers to sign a contract that lasts for months, and if they go with a different agent they'll still have to pay a fee to the first agent in addition to the fee to the second agent who actually sells it
I would hope that a TV show like this could find them a way out of the contract, but I assume as they stuck with that agent they couldn't or weren't willing to try!
I have toured a home where the homeowner was present with her family ready for enjoy their coffee. She was also a realtor. Felt so awkward after a few minutes with our realtor we wanted to step outside to discuss the pros and cons. Our realtor said that it usually doesn't work well when the homeowner is present.
Wow the agent is not the sort of agent I would use. Change the agent would be my suggestion. What is the current agent doing to ensure a sale up until now? Nothing at all !
I suspect the problem isn't that people can't see past the interior. I think it's that potential buyers don't like the interior and it would take too much time and money to make it more to their liking. There is just too much to fix.
Also when you're viewing a place you don't want to have to do with the owner. All the personal clutter is bad enough and Betty doing her hospitable teas etc is seriously preventing future buyers from imagining the home as their own.
@@desstanbridge8283 So true!
time to change agents
Surface wiring and heating pipework, old kitchen, questionable brickwork above the window at the back, messy neighbours.
Do people really reject a house due to a bit of carpet or spotty wallpaper??
You can fix up a house but are stuck with difficult neighbors. Next door is the reason this house is unsaleable
Honestly, despite what these shows tell you, when it came to property hunting I could care less about the current decor and entirely ignored the furnishings that would be leaving. I was very driven by price, location and the things about the place that aren't going to change - like room size, amount and size of windows, etc. We were also very clear we'd be buying a brick or stone built house, not one of the new builds with flimsy construction. Don't let a bit of carpet or wallpaper put you off the right house, in the big picture it's very minor issues.
And guy next door with the mess garden is totally blagging it. It's the way he keeps saying yeah, he's used to placating people when he doesn't do stuff. Then he says in a week, then says two... something like that, then trails off vaguely. I bet that never happened. They didn't mention it in the four week later update.
Agree with you, going to re decorate it anyway.
I have bought and sold many houses over the years and got some great bargains because so many people can't see beyond the terrible furnishings, clutter etc. They have no imagination and so you and I get the bargains. x
No sign of the kitchen or bathroom, which if they are in keeping with the rest of the house will take some serious money and time to sort out. Just showing three rooms where the entire strategy amounts to “clear the crap, change the carpet and paint it cream”. How do they get a tv program out of this 😂
This apparently was for sale in the 2008s, in a VERY difficult market for selling houses. Easy for averyone trashing the agent seen from 2024 where houses are sold like hot cookies..
It doesn't matter that this is from 16 years ago - something that hasn't changed is that sellers and buyers have no imagination. The seller can't see the house the way the buyers will. The buyers cannot imagine what the house will look with a paint and carpet change. So much wrong here, especially the estate agent letting all this business go on without caring - completely useless. The estate agent has too much business. No sale board, trash piled up next door - no thanks!
Totally agree. Bought my house this year and I so had to see pass the red bedroom walls and carpets. Lime green banister and cupboards and bedroom doors upstairs. With a lot of white paint, so happy I looked passed the colour scheme
@@sylsuthss Hopefully it was good for you that the seller or their agent left it in those polarizing colors. Bad for the seller who likely could have sold for thousands more by first doing the painting in white or another neutral color. Most people have poor visualization skills and no imagination - they cannot unsee a house once they have seen it as a mess, poorly decorated, or with questionable colors or weird/clunky layouts of furniture. The average house has too much furniture and clutter. When I've been touring houses for sale I have been amazed how many people keep shabby, broken, and just plain worn out furniture - or like in your case leaving paint colors too personalized.
@@Thomas63r2Ouch!😅
The only comment that I have is that when you were showing the property is that you showed a little bit of the kitchen which was horrible and we all know that kitchen and bathrooms are the most expensive! Bedrooms and living rooms you spend very little money there in comparison. why not put the most of the money where people Don’t think in their mind “Oh my god I have to remodel the kitchen and the bathroom” not saying that you have to remodel those but you would have to do a serious facelift on both which can be done fairly inexpensively, but that’s where a lot of people who are buying, including myself, are looking to see how much expense is it going to be to fix the kitchen and the bathrooms
That is true. For me, they are the selling points of any home. I would have been willing to buy the house as it is and declutter and paint for 500 pounds but if the kitchen and bathroom aren't great and needs extensive updating, it will be a put-off.
Exactly.
Kitchens and bathrooms are very important but weren't shown.
That is NOT shag carpeting...it's old "sculpted" carpet. LOL
I agree, I was shouting that at the video😀
I would be very Very upset with that estate agent nice refit loved the people who lived there
If I saw that hoard at the neighbors, I would leave without looking at the house.
I just love this grandma. 💖 seems like a very nice couple. 😊
defo case of lazy agent not doing the job solid house supprised not snapped up.
When I lived in England it was normal for the owner to show prospective buyers around the house. Estate agents only listed the property then took their commission when the house sold. Moving to America we were amazed that the realtor came and showed the house. Not only that they wrote up the contract when an offer was made, did all the paperwork and showed up at the closing.
Why no kitchen or bathroom pictures?
they only spent 500 on the total revamp so no funds for those rooms I imagine...
$5,000 is the maximum to spend.
❤ thIs couple!
In Scotland it has been the norm for the owner to show the property for sale.
It's the property for sale not the contents , look past the contents use your imagination they are elderly.
I sold my house few months back, went to agents office for final signing. Not one single thankyou from them, it all just seemed an effort that we even there. Easiest 7k they made. Customer service non existent
Painting wallpaper creates a real future problem. It is quick.
The Best thing about this episode is.. How Betty and Ron hold hands when they go outside Awe precious, the secret to a happy loving relationship. regarding the show.. people need vision. a makeover is great, it's uplifting and refreshing but the shades used in this episode are boring and bland. variety is the spice of life and makes a house a home.
So if you live in the property you do the viewings yourself and then you pay the estate agent their fee....why the heck would you bother you can put your house on the market and use the exact same listing apps as they do! I would put a fence up between my house and my neighbours house if their front garden looked that bad!
Betty is wonderful what a lovely lady. I do hope they managed to sell and move to nearer to their daughter.
That agent need sacking or re-training. She could have mentioned the fact that it looks a bit dated and could do with a bit of updating and de-cluttering. I think that the fact the agent is going to get thousands for selling the house, the very least would be to do the viewings. If I lived localy to this estate agents, I would be going elsewhere to sell my house. What a sad human being Lisa the agent must be.
Thank you for sharing your video at 12:02 those ceiling tile's are a no no they needed taken down instead of painting over them they are are a fire hazard the estate agent should have gone over with other things that should be best to change for the house to be sold. God bless and stay safe ❤
Not shag, that is sculpted carpet! Know what you’re talking about! I don’t think it’s unsellable. The decor and wallpaper/carpets are irrelevant. Seller could offer an incentive bonus and sell as is. Might be less trouble than renovating!
I’m surprised that viewers of the house could not look beyond the superficial
Very nice transition! Too bad they had a lazy realtor. They needed a motivated agent!
Why did they make it a 2 bed? If buyers couldn't use their imagination before, they sure not going to imagine a single bed in the box room.
I thought the elderly couple didn't have an agent that's why they did showings themselves. Turns out they actually have an agent, amazingly lazy one. That agent should pay them the commission. Unbelievable.
The presenter (Lady) has such an arrogant and disrespectful attitude towards the homeowners. Trying to ridicule their taste. Her jokes about the carpets etc are out of place. Rude presenter.
Absolutely! Why try to humiliate that lovely old lady.
The presenter is from the “aristocracy” don’t you know…so most of us ARE beneath her.
Agree she hopeless.
The GFC was around this time. Prices plummeted in the UK and people couldn't get Mortgages easily. The Agent was an utter disgrace and should have been replaced. I bet the Neighbours rubbish didn't get moved!
What about the kitchen and the master and the bathroom? You didn’t even mention those and they are major items.
The maximum amount of money to spend in the reno is $5,000 so it wouldn't have been enough for the kitchen and bathroom
I don't know why people hire real estate agents. I sold my home my self. I met with the buyer. She went to the bank to apply for a loan, etc. These real estate agents talk a big talk just like car dealers. They make you feel like you can never do anything yourself, that you need their "expert assistance". BS!
No offence, but blimey - magnolia from top to bottom? You could have made over the property without making it so completely bland. A feature wall here and there at least?
Weird I would see through the decor so easy. If I was looking. I have had eight homes, I have improved each one and made a profit.
Did it sell? You leave the most. important part out.
My thoughts exactly 💯
An update to this programme would be lovely.
I'd love to know how they managed to pack up, paint and put down brand new carpet for under £500! Admittedly 8 years ago, but it's still low. Add a zero maybe?
This was in 2008 prices.
Loved the owners, everyone would love a nan like her. The problem I have with this programme though is.. they spent £500 on some paint and decluttering but even after 4 weeks the house still hadn't sold which kind of tells me that the issues are probably more to do with the kitchen and bathroom which they failed to show us or address and are as everyone knows.. the money areas of a house. I also hate that they never say if the house eventually sold or not and if so, how much for. The estate agent was useless and just took their money for doing nothing at all, could have listed it themselves and saved the realtor fee.
They showed both when the owner did her viewing.12:55 in the video.
@@thaismatsumoto You're right, they did and if you look, the kitchen is outdated, lacking wall units etc, the bathroom you couldn't see very well but from what could be seen.. looked outdated too, I understand that they might also be only cosmetic but those rooms are generally what sell your house and should be more of the focal areas when transforming to sell.
I don't know who the presenter is, ( was!) but she's very annoying, doesn't even know that tigers have stripes apparently ( re the carpet).
It's Sophie Allsop, sister of Kirsty. She did a similar series in Canada. Still snobby and descending.
I think we can gather she doesn't like their carpets😮 agree she's very annoying😠
Would have changed the blue carpet out as well and not covered with a rug. Much improved though 👍👀
But did the couple actually move in the end & who purchased the house??
Ex. council house expecting sale price equal to non council, would not touch one with a barge pole.
No way all that work was done for under £500, even if it was done 16 years ago. Carpet alone would have cost that much
You don’t buy a house because you love the carpet and curtains! The owners will take the curtains with them most likely and unless they are really new the first thing I would want to do is paint a room the colour I want and get brand new flooring. I’d far rather buy a house that needs decoration and new carpets for a couple of thousand less, than pay a couple of thousand more for someone else’s idea of nice colours and floors.
That's right!
Next door ! Well say no more
To be honest in 2008 was hard to sell any house anywhere.
What passes for sellable in the UK is astounding to the rest of the world! It’s small, outdated even with the renos. Cheap carpet and a terrible paint job do not a home make. I do hope they sold it because they seem a lovely couple.
It's 16 years old.
Not really 😂 what an idiotic comment. Have you been all over the world looking at property for sale? You only have to watch every single renovation video on youtube to realise sellable is open to interpretation.
I love seeing the children helping. Something rare now days.
Why did you not tell the couple to change Estate agents!!
What about the bathroom and kitchen? You didn't show that.
I thought the lounge room carpet would have been the sitting room carpet would have been ripped out and published the boards or
She should remember that what is 'clutter' to her are 'memories' for this couple.
Personally, I wouldn't give this young woman house-room.
Buyers don't see memories. They smell must and see clutter. If you're planning to sell, you need to do what is best to shift the perspectives to your favour.
@@KaeMaiden If the prospective buyers can't empathise themselves, the estate agent, (if they happen to have any themselves,) could mention the sellers age, and how difficult it must be to let go of all the memories. The agent,if any good at the job at all, points out the spaciousness, etc to the client...Still wouldn't give her houseroom.
I dont suppose the neighbour has got rid of the rubbish yet
Honestly, the decor is hideous…you must declutter and get modern display furniture in. Spending a bit of money updating the main areas (without over capitalising) may tip the balance in their favour…
I’ve never heard of this programme, but that estate agent should have been changed, as they will claim % of the sale price and they didn’t work for it. The daughter should have encouraged her parents to change the estate agent.
I think this presenter is really rude! People are buying the building NOT the contents!!!!!! Buying put their own mark on the house when they buy regardless of the inside. I think the problem is the lazy agents.
Old lady sounded like Donald Duck😂
John Rennie is kinda cute.
Not impressed with your assessment. The carpet was not shag carpeting but sculptured. Who cares what curtains they had up, the house is not being sold with their furniture. Be realistic, most people can see beyond the decoration as mist will make their own mark on the property. Disappointed with advice and reviews.
Poundshop Phil and Kirstie.
What a lovely lady Betty is. The estate agent is disgraceful, what was she actually doing to earn her fee? I wouldn't be paying her and doing the job myself.
So did it sell? I would have fired her is she was my agent! Not excuse for laziness for the commission that will be collected.
5:34
190?? Are you sure?? 😂
That is not a shag pile carpet
Old mismatched furniture replaced with new, cheaper mismatched furniture.
What a SCAM of a real estate agent....REALLY you are having your 80 year old client do your work while you collect the selling fees? You didn't mention that theirs is a end unit which people usually like ...
Love they shame the estate agents
I wonder how much this house is worth today,I would hazard a guess and say maybe around 700,000 maybe even more
The presenter is really up herself. So rude
Im confused with British fashion. Ive seen many new shows and everyone looks like they’ve waked out of the 80s/90s. When was this made?
Anything sells if the price is right.
The female presenter is an absolute disgrace with the disparaging remakes she is making about the decor. I like to see the decor in her house when she is in her eighties. All she had to say was it’s out of date and would make a great renovation project but we need to declutter and brighten it up.
Very rude estate agent.
New estate agent and presenters a little fewer put downs from preening Madame.
I know this show is nearly 20 years old but this is a piece of nonsense. People buy renovation projects all the time and have done for decades. The estate agent should have kept in regular contact and given Betty the option of a viewer. It costs more but would be worth it.
This show need a new host. I wouldn’t want her looking through my house..
Lisa needs to get up off her arse and do her job.
Greedy lazy agents!
I can’t watch this who ever madam is looking round the dear couples home dreadful woman
It's in London who wants to live there
