- Dragon Ball's manga ending has always had a weird reputation among fans. Written by Akira Toriyama in 1995, chapter 519 sees Goku leave his family to train with a kid he just met...
But is there more to it than that? People say Dragon Ball GT's ending was perfect but Dragon Ball's shouldn't be underestimated just because it doesn't try to overwhelm the audience with nostalgia.
Goku vs Uub is actually an amazing ending to the series and contains genius call backs to the series' roots and even seen Akira Toriyama fix the greatest writing mistake he made with Dragon Ball...

I always thought the ending was important because it was a back to basics moment, something I think the series lost when transformations took over a bit too much and Super just further exaggerating it more imo. This video shown me even more of that now.
I can appreciate that too, I like the manga's ending, Toriyama took Dragon Ball back to its roots for one last time.
Told it 100 times, gonna say it 101: Super took what was bad in Buu arc and turned it up 100. It's a power level theme park. Also bad retcons and character developement from Z thrown out: Goku is idiot again. Vegeta is a clown now. Although Vegeta did go through to a more "mild" state at the end of Z, he still stayed a proud man.

I liked the ending of Dragon Ball Z. I just wish Goku didn't abandon his family to train his new apprentice. Why not invite the apprentice to live with his family instead? Then he could train the kid and stay with his family too.
I suppose it's weird to basically take the kid away from his own family back home, but they could have invited the kid's parents to stay with them too.
Better the way Toriyama did it. Goku leaving his family for that kid for the sake of “protecting the earth” makes it much more interesting.
Considering you’re supposed to question Goku’s motives and morality throughout the series the ending leaves you with three options to consider. Is he really leaving his family to train Oob to protect earth? Or is just because he wants to fight him at his strongest? Which would be very selfish. Or is a bit of both? That’s the true genius of the ending. Bringing the kid home with him makes his motives less interesting.

@@Schizo_Ty Both are the reasons why he trained Oob. To protect earth and someone stronger to face. Hell he said it himself at the end of the Majin Boo Saga and he achieved his goal in GT. This is the OG timeline. Now The Super timeline will have Oob as someone stronger to face since Goku wanted Majin Boo to come back as a good person so he can fight him again🤓💯
@@great159 Yes obviously both are reasons but it’s about what is truly motivating him to train Oob. You can find evidence in the story that supports both reasons.
I've been of the opinion since forever that every arc of DBZ, including the Saiyan Saga, was written to be the "ending" of Dragon ball. With the Saiyan Saga in particular being intended to be a sort of epilogue to the series explaining Goku's origins and having him pass the torch to Gohan. (Also why it had the moniker of "Z") I think during that though Toriyama was either flooded with new ideas or saw it's success with fans and just kept going with it, and because his writing style is one where he just kinda makes things up as he goes he was able to adapt to that change in direction. Realistically almost every saga in Z could work as an "Ending" or be rewritten slightly in a way to accommodate that change. (Goku finishes off the last of his evil Saiyan brethren in the hardest fight he's had after already being brought back by the dragon balls causing him his final death and clearing away the past and handing things off to Gohan, Goku dying on Namek , sacrificing himself to defeat the tyrant Frieza, and of course the sacrificial ending in the cell saga and the ending to the Buu saga as well.)
Nah, the Saiyan Saga is the only 1 that doesn’t work as an ending. Killing off most of the extended cast, no Dragon Balls, the main villain just leaving the planet. It would be too bittersweet
There is no proof of any of that, every arc you mentioned either ended in a cliffhanger or were never said to be the ending.

As weird as I thought the ending to Dragon Ball Z was, it actually was pretty smart on Toriyama’s end because it allowed him the option to return with a new story. Even now with Super being set before the end of Z, even if Super was to come to an end, they could easily continue the series because they have the option to pick up from after the end of Z if they officially decide to make GT “non canon” because even tho fans consider GT non canon, neither Toei or Toriyama has came out and discredit it

It was never about deciding to make GT non canon. GT was never canon to begin with. The canon is clear: Dragon Ball Chapter 1 to Dragon Ball Chapter 519.

imagine if they had made the new DBZ about Goku training Uub like he was kid Goku and we still see the feats of an aged Goku who stays in his prime kinda like Beerus is to Goku atm
Bruh imagine the story being we watched goku grow till z, sacrifices himself against his brother, then we follow gohan as the new lead going forward, just like his father before him, but this time being trained by gokus enemy piccolo for a new enemy in vegeta... and the story continues to gohan later doing the same with vagetas son and training trunks ... the story was already in place manga written this way for over a year and it wasn't working as well so editors brought goku back, and the same happened in sayaman arc but it didn't work again so the manga was virtually wrapped up at boo, and his next story points were having goku as a kid again with gt, you can see how toriyama story telling and character design are whith majority of his other manga and Z is very different for him

toriyama was honest about gohan. he made gohan act natural to who is and did not make him act just to serve the plot. goku trains uub at the end because it will allow for him to opportunity to be fulfilled by fighting and training someone that he hopes can be as powerful as buu. his normal domestic life does not satisfy him. it is partly why he was cool staying dead since he could train in the other world (he also threw in how it was to avoid threats from going to earth to fight him).
He achieved his goal for Oob and himself in GT🤓

Honestly Toriyama could simply change Gohan.s character? Maybe he has grown about fighting s much that he can longer abandon fighting. He come from a family ofmartail artist,has saiyan blood and grown up fighting since childhood that fighting is now a natural part of life he can,t let go of.That,s how traumappears in real life,you keep repeating certain actions in a repetitive cycle.And it would an awesome conflict.Goham hates fighting and violence and loves peace but he can never let go of martial arts because it literally defines his life.And so he has to go ona spiritual martial arts journey when he becomes the protagnist in order to reflect on his life and find his reason and philosophy for fighting. Maybe Gohan would ,n t fight in order to become the strongest martial artist.However he would practise martial artist in order to be strong enough to 'protect' the peace and his loved one whenever threats appear. And also devlving into the more spiritual aspect of martial arts

One of my wishes was to see Uub in the main role of the series as intended in this ending, I even spent four years writing a GT Remake fanfiction called "Dragon Ball GT Kai" with Uub as the protagonist and the result was satisfying.

I can’t even deny, a series that starts with an enemy assassinating Goku, getting rid of all dragon balls, and leaving Uub close to death would’ve been amazing, then Uub has to align with all the Z fighters and learn from them as each die in battles moving forward in the series. The power creep never needed to happen like this

I agree with you, Oob being side-lined was kind of disappointing. I found the character popping up at the end of Dragon Ball to be rather odd, but having him not even make a single appearance (in the show and movies) after being introduced as someone who was seemingly going to be important someday, was even more odd.
He did appear twice in super (well one was more of a mention) (also manga spoilers)
He came at the end of the morro arc to save goku by giving a bunch of god ki. And before that dende mentioned to goku a human who may have been the incarnation of kid buu (refering to uub)

Pretty much the latter, Uub would go hard as a next protagonist but just like when Gohan was supposed to become the protagonist. Goku was so popular that people were just against Gohan becoming the mc. They could have Uub be the next protagonist but why risk it when they could just regress Goku's character development so they can repeat it all with super and have goku be the mc again.

This is why I love GT. It felt like more of a genuine sequel and continuation of DBZ and had a beautiful ending where Goku reaches his changed state and becomes quite literally a God. Everyone he saw were about to ask the question, "Goku, are you -" before Goku would cut them off. He also has the ability to go anywhere like Hell to see Piccolo. Another lovely part was the GT Special "A Hero's Legacy" and how God Goku grants Goku Jr's. wish with 2 dragon balls and as soon as he disappears, Pan and Puck greet Goku Jr. even though old Pan was on her death bed and puck fell down a large ravine/valley (whatever they're called) - Puck and Pan were now completely fine.

My only problem with the ending is that Pan didn’t go with them.
If they ever decide to make a next gen Dragon Ball story. Pan should be the protagonist, NOT Uub. Uub can certainly be a main character for sure, but the heir for the spot of protagonist belongs to Pan and there is nothing that will change my mind.
Another parallel I really like between Goku and Uub is the fact both were originally meant to destroy the planet. That is before Goku hit his head and when Uub was Kid Buu in his past life.

The Cell Saga makes for a better ending. It's not a mistake to shift the role to Gohan. It would have led to better stories. As it stands, starting in the Buu Saga, Gohan doesn't even feel like the same character anymore.

Solid take on Gohan secretly being the main protagonist of DBZ. I just have a hard time believing Toriyama planning anything in advance. He's at his best when he pulls it at out of no where.

Yep just as i was saying before, dragon ball is virtually left unfinished and more like toriyama left the manga cause he was never able to do what he really wanted which was kill off goku and have gohan as the lead.. eventually the story went too far gohan got too old and the story again didnt work to have gohan as lead at sayaman arc so its almost like her wrapped up whatever he had planned and left the story alone
Which is why ill always say gt is more to toriyama original vision for where dragon ball should go than super ever will be, toriyamas style and story telling is more inline with dragon ball... were as Z became more inline with editors notes and they never let him continue with his stories of kids going on adventures, which in a sense is why each story point tends to have a new kid as the otheres get older

actually, i don't know where i read this, but seems dragon ball had a bigger success in Latin America than originally over japan, so Toriyama paid a homage to Latin America by ending the manga with a character train by Goku who resemble, in his mind, the Latin American phenotype. as where actually this success that keep him producing stories for the manga.
Latin america is huge on db that true. But uub resembles a south asian more than a mexican so i doubt that

Are you serious? Expecting an author to not give their long running series an ending so that after a 20 year break they could continue it, is stupid. Super could have just done a better job working around the restraints that the original story laid out. There is no reason that Super can't just have a time skip that makes the end of Z actually line up pretty well and it can continue from there.
