Wow, great ties. Well done. I'm an old guy - 61+ years of age - Steelheader for ever. Personally - and by that I mean personally - I've caught enough Steelhead to satisfy the Skagit itch. Now I fish only small traditional spey flees on a long line. For me, it's not how many, it's "how". To each their own. I miss 60% of the fish in the run. I know it, but an eat on the long line is Divine. Respect for the flies you tie, and I prefer a long line with a wee dee. I do fool some, but not all. I'm content with that. PS you are a very good instructor for Skagit flies. You can pick my pocket any tine.

Man your flies are works of art. It’s crazy how you get so many materials on the shank without it looking overcrowded. I’ve never tied flies like these, it looks a little intimidating. Do you think these will cast Ok on a 10’ 9” trout Spey rod with a Skagit head.
Hell yeah, you can tie these super small with all the same exact techniques just scaled down

Another Camo Squid aficionado! They are my confidence pattern for sure. Do you typically omit fur from your first loop? I've been playing around between fox, polar bear and finn raccoon, but haven't gone the full synthetic route yet. Great video
Thanks! Yeah the first loop I always do with just a dubbing blend, if you make the body too solid and dense it will create an eddy behind the fly and pull the hackle tips into it.
I have not watched all of the video yet but have a noob queston. Do sparsely tied flies like your Red and Black Mahoney (or say a classic spey type fly) sink faster than the fuller profile type flies featured in this video? (comparing non-weighted flies)
So you have buoyancy of materials fighting against weight of hardware.That’s the general equation. Sparsely tied flies will sink faster yes. Of course to battle that, if you do want a full body and a fast sink weight, I’d use a tungsten cone and a short shank. That will drop like a bullet.

First! A lot of people say to fish small steelhead flies like mini Ho Bo speys where I am (Northern California). Why are PNW flies bigger than the ones that work down here?
They don't need to be. Same flies as norcal work great here. Fun to tie different things. Good advice at the end of the video about weight of fly and situations where you would choose one over the other.
I have a personal love of big flies, you can tie these exact patterns as big or small as you want them. Just scale everything proportionally! 😊
I started fishing for steelhead in Nor Cal in 1978. I have got fish from size 14 nymphs to big string leeches. You need to fish the fly for the conditions. A large profile fly will show up better in off color water than a small nymph. Whether fishing coastal steelhead or inland steelhead, steelhead tend to be aggressive. Once the fish have been in the river awhile and they have seen many offerings, I start going down in size and more earth tone colors.
@@AquaFlies Thanks for the info! I really like y'all's fly-tying materials too. The only hooks, shanks, and tubing I use is aqua flies.
