My reading time at lunch is SACRED and I refuse to waste it doing small talk about useless things just not to be seen as an antisocial. Live and let people live please
this isn't long after she started right? which is really what bugged me the most about this, aside from picking on her for not being as social. was she supposed to have a bestie by the end of her first day?
@@QuirkyalonesterI mean, she didn’t have “to have a bestie by the end of the first day”, but she was literally wearing headphones. It’s perfectly understandable for someone to struggle making friends at first, but she was clearly not even really trying. It’s actually not a bad thing for the school to be concerned for her.
But this had nothing to do with Rory being “different”. It’s perfectly reasonable, and even responsible, for a school to get concerned about a student who doesn’t seem to socialize.
Watching this again after watching the revival - I can see another part where Rory went wrong. Being able to leverage the connections of successful people around you is really important
@@lauriecarson6483 I'm personally not criticising her, I actually see it as a cautionary tale and I think a lot of women do. A lot of young girls are raised to be like "Rory" be quiet, smart, keep to yourself and good things will happen. That might be great to get you into college, but in the real world you have to stand up for yourself and fight for what you want. You need connections and be actively sociable. The world does not reward "good girls". I've learned this for myself and I think a lot of women are re-watching the show and realizing this too.
@@AP-pm9qy Didn't Rory stood up to the headmaster when he said she was going to be suspended for something he told her to do. She said it wasn't right to point her out cause and tell her to make friends cause she don't live in Hartford. He told her she was a loner and needed to make friends. He can't force her to do anything and it wasn't hurting anyone. And there were times when Rory stood up for herslef in the show. So yeah I don't agree with you.
@@lauriecarson6483 Lol I'm seeing this a year later. She was assertive when she was in Chilton but fell apart for some reason when she went to Yale. Logan's father told her she didn't have what it takes to be a journalist and she succumbed to his opinion and by the time we get to the rival she is no longer the strong and determined person she was when she was in high school.
Every time Rory is doing okay, somehow even MORE of her existence must be compromised for the sake of getting into college jesus does she get time to herself ever
Ours was Ms. Merlin. She was like a hypochondriac by proxy - every incident was a sign of deep emotional trauma to her, and if you didn’t admit it you were “repressing.” She was exhausting. Worse, she was so busy focusing on little stuff, she never noticed when someone was an actual psycho.
Reading is all well and good but I don't know how she listens to music at the same time. I find music very distracting when I read I have to pick one or the other. Unless its such bland music that it works as white noise I suppose.
I listen to music while reading, but I put on something that could be less distracting, like classical music or lofi. Something that helps me concentrate but won't distract me from the book by singing along.
Lorelai makes a good point about the environment at Chilton in the episode The Deer Hunters. I know it is a highly regarded private prep school, but Lorelai makes a good point about the school setting impossible standards and nurturing kids who bully each other. How can a student focus on learning in a place like this? And apparently this school looks down on people who prefer to spend some of their time alone, calling them loners. If I were a parent, I would not want to send my child to a place like this.
The counselor was well represented, they often jump to conclusions and act so wise for their own good, considering they only scratch the surface of the students.
honestly it's easy to get good grades but then again i was a good student but i know some people struggle but many fail bc they dont do assignments or even attend classes. also i like that gilmore girls touches on the topics of academics and socialization; you can excel in both. it's not all or nothing
Very few people get involved in school or their community because they want to. Its sucky, but it’s the truth. Most people think about how that activity can help them gain experience for college or look good on their college apps. It’s also not a well known truth and if you don’t come from a really competitive school you might just think grades are enough.
As she did prove later in the episode, she doesn't need to socialize with anyone at her school or atleast force herself to be friends with people she doesn't know because she does have friends and well wishers in her town. The guidance counselor and the headmaster spoke from their limited perspective about her behaviour at school. And getting good grades should be enough, in any school. If anything else like extracurricular activities or membership of clubs etc. is considered necessary - well even that is reasonable. That makes sense. No school should force students to mingle and socialize with other people - it's best when it happens in it's own time and at it's own pace.
Well, she was kind of right. You need connections in order to succeed in life but Rory was a general liked person wherever she went... that was the problem she really had, everything came so easy for her that she didn't know how to deal with things when everything becomes hard or she wasn't as liked like how she was as a teen.

Heck YES - I fully and wholeheartedly agree to that!!!
Fr, when I don’t see my friends at lunch I just do what Rory does. I’m completely okay with being alone like Rory is

“It’s a big story for me I’m surprised I don’t tell it better” 😂
I always hated this...There is nothing wrong with being alone. I hate how if you are a little "different" others try to make you feel bad.
I hated that scene too! It was so dumb. Making a big deal out nothing jeez 😒

Exactly

No matter whar Rory does its always wrong with this fan base. Rory blinks and fans gets offended and finds someway to critize her.

I love this channel. Thank you for all that you do.
Counselors who jump to conclusions are shit. I worry for those who really needed her.
Imagine if Elon Musk had been a Chiltern student, what the guidance counselor would have made of him and his social behavior? 😂😂

I am literally watching this on school morning 🙂
“I’m jumpy!”
😂😸😸
Dude, when the counselor “tapped” Rory’s shoulder was NOT a tap! That would’ve freaked me out as well! I’m a jumpy person… 🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️😭
This is stupid. People think you’re abnormal if you prefer to sit by yourself during lunch
2:18. I'd be like, "I quit."
U2,huh?
Oh my god, this is so problematic. Introverts have the right to be themselves.

Imo if this were real life, this guidance counsellor would be the terror of schools. Forcing people to be social...
I really hate that coubselor..and dont get me started with the headmaster.
Right?.
Preach!!

Even pretty girls.
Here's another example how she only wants to do the bare minimum (compared to other people). "I get good grades. Isn't that enough?"

Yea but you shouldn’t be snobby, you should meet and get to know different people

yea this scene bothered me too, why don't ppl leave well enough alone. Also, why bother students while they're eating their lunch.
Can anyone tell me the name of the music she's listening to?
'Know Your Onion!' by the Shins, who performed a live concert in a later episode.
