I have a 2013 global ford ranger and the dealer never changed the diff oil in 6 years. I changed it for the first time at jan 2020 and I think there was more metal dust than oil in whatever came out of that diff. Glad i did the diff oil change. Definitely recommended to change out all fluids in the first 1000 miles or so, not just engine oil. Edit: i used teflon tape to seal the threads on the drain and fill plugs. No issues so far.

I have 2015 Taurus SHO and it has the rear differential same as the 2013 to 2019 Escape. Got the old "filled for life" BS and I was curious how to make that process easier? I was planning on putting it on a lift myself and sucking out the fill plug by removing with a very thin 3/8 inch ratchet and then pumping what I sucked out. Dealer wanted to remove entire rear end and pull the entire rear differential, about $1000 quoted to service a rear end.... my god.
You realize that most of the drain plugs are metal, so the magnet usually is attracted to them, oh course if it is aluminum, it has to be glued or physically attached. That can break, but drain plugs are cheap. Then there is the fact that drain plugs have had magnets in them for decades, so we pretty much have that figured out by now.
That drain plug cost ford 5 cent's per vehicle. Expect that to be eliminated next year. Did you say 60 bucks per quart? Is that magic 75w gear lube or something? Thanks for telling us the mileage on this video. Would like to hear that on every video Brian.

@@FordTechMakuloco Thx bud , on your other video ( 5.4 engines ) you said to go from 5w20 to 5w30, would you say the same for my 17 continental with the 3.7 engine ? it has 30 k miles
do you think the 2020+ is a better design overall? Have a 2016 and hate the non-serviceable fragile trans, have the 2.0 which hopefully remains the reliable option. Hearing some initial build issues but if the overall design is better I may take the plunge
Hey quick question do you have any updates/new information on the 2018-2020 5.0 F-150 oil burning issue? Is there anything we can do about it or is it something that we can live with? Will it cause serious engine damage down the road? Are my cylinders being damaged? I plan on doing the consumption test, all TSB’s and putting a catch can on to help with it. Thanks again and love the channel
Don't wait. Do the consumption test. If it burns enough oil, you should have no problem getting a new motor. The most important thing is the dealership. Some dealerships hate doing heavy line work and will try to get rid of you. Other dealers, like where I work, are set up to do big jobs, and want to take them in. So, if you don't get the answers you want at one dealer, try different ones. Don't be afraid to take it to a Lincoln only dealer either. They work on Ford branded vehicles as well.
you said to break the fill loose to help vent . no vent on these??? thats how i know the vent is working when draining diffs- leave the fill plug in and see how it drains. sometimes you can even hear it. yeah ford is good about making expensive lubes. i remember late '70's the grease for cv joints had whale oil and a small tube to do just one was 70 bucks.
Of course there is a vent like any other driveline component. The reason I say to remove the fill plug to fully vent the diff is to prevent the glugging effect as the fluid is evacuated. Its best to fully vent so the fluid can rush out as seen here and bring as much of the sediment on the bottom of the case with it.
Im glad to see the 2020 has a drain plug. I am currently attempting to do a 2013 rear end and its no fun. Do you have a video for any tricks or tips on the 2013-2019?
Great video as always. $60 a qt because it only takes one qt so they wont sell as much. If each differential took 4 qts im sure the price would be lower . Edit: I commented before finishing the video. I see you mentioned why you thought it was so expensive. The volume plays a role just as i suspected
Ridiculous that ford needs to be praised for having s drain plug. Ford is starting to rival Porsche in terms of making simple designs over complicated.
Funny there is a spot for it but its not there hahahaha The new 10 speeds have a recall on the oil cooler if I'm not mistaken. Also they used a rubber type coupler for the drive shaft that is cracking.
@@jacknickolstine3355 There's more than one 10 speed. They came out with a smaller version that goes in the new Explorer. This is the one with the leaking cooler. Its actually very easy to do. Less than 10 minutes to swap it out. The real labor goes into setting the fluid level. You need to have FDRS connected to the vehicle while its running and monitor the pid for trans fluid temp. It has to be 206 degrees before you can set it, and you need to look in the workshop manual for the range the fluid has to be in on the dipstick. At this point, some of you may be thinking, there is no dipstick on the new explorer. Not a normal one, but its there. They removed the old tube design that allows you to put a long dipstick in that can be accessed from under the hood. This was removed, and in its place you get a small plastic dipstick and an aluminum cap that goes over the top. You access it from underneath the car (while the motor is running, and looking at a computer screen to make sure its at 206 degrees, and you have to use special fluid). Also, the car needs to be test driven, so you do this more than once. I've seen other techs try to run through it quick, but almost every one came back with a fluid level issue. You'll be happy to know that the Transit with the rubber driveshaft coupling problem has finally ben resolved after all these years. They did away with the rubber piece and you put a new front section of the driveshaft in. Its a little longer, and they just don't use the rubber piece anymore. They also update the connector from 3 bolts to 4. It took years for them to come up with this fix.
I feel like Ford is making better steps for fluid services on the latest vehicles, take away that F150 trans service which is still a pain. I also noticed they don’t have nearly as many “lifetime” rated fluids which was a failure.

@@FordTechMakuloco Thx bud , on your other video ( 5.4 engines ) you said to go from 5w20 to 5w30, would you say the same for my 17 continental with the 3.7 engine ? it has 30 k miles
Do you need to add Ford XL3 Fricton mod to this service ?
Does this include 2020 ford ecosport?
do you think the 2020+ is a better design overall?
Large drain pan and a nose clip so you can get it done fast.
Great video as always. $60 a qt because it only takes one qt so they wont sell as much. If each differential took 4 qts im sure the price would be lower .
Edit: I commented before finishing the video. I see you mentioned why you thought it was so expensive. The volume plays a role just as i suspected
That’s my thinking.
I don’t use Mitchell or Alldata I use FTM!
So will this diff inevitably have issues like Ford’s older and more problematic PTUs?
Great info, thanks
haha, picked an easy year. Now do a video on the 2013-2019 MY rear diff.
"Picked" an easy year? I take what comes in the shop.
@@FordTechMakuloco Fair enough. Hopefully a 2013 will come your way that needs the intake valves cleaned from carbon build up.
Is it same fluid for the 2020 ford explorer limited?
Ridiculous that ford needs to be praised for having s drain plug. Ford is starting to rival Porsche in terms of making simple designs over complicated.
Funny there is a spot for it but its not there hahahaha
The new 10 speeds have a recall on the oil cooler if I'm not mistaken.
Also they used a rubber type coupler for the drive shaft that is cracking.
Have you seen what you have to do to drop a transmission pan in a Transit? Lol
@@fargenvonwitbier you don't have to drop the sub-frame BTW
@@fargenvonwitbier it is a very simple procedure to replace anything on a Transit, you sell it.
A year old and that much surface rust? Seems like a lot even if exposed to salt, correct me if I'm wrong.
What surface rust? 🤣
Axle shafts
I wish I was this clueless about rust. I'm sure acetylene torches collect a lot of dust at shops in the south.
Axles are the first thing to flash over, there all un coated. Go to a new car lot and look under a lot of new cars, guarantee alot have rust on them
@@edwardmyers1746 True true. It's the nature of the beast
Make a video doing a 2013 escape
What is the best axle fluid for a F-150 X.L.T 2005 rare wheel drive 5.4 V8
I feel like Ford is making better steps for fluid services on the latest vehicles, take away that F150 trans service which is still a pain. I also noticed they don’t have nearly as many “lifetime” rated fluids which was a failure.
I wonder if I can do a rear diff swap
lol welcome to 2000....about time Ford caught up in terms of servicing a rear diff on their rear diff.
